- I had a vehicle in the shop it was a 2016 Chevy Impala but this information is the same for the 2014 to 2019 Chevy impala with the 3.6 v6 . we’re gonna show you how to change the spark plugs. More importantly we’re gonna show you how to remove the intake successfully without breaking anything and give you some tips and tricks on the installation I’m not gonna show you the installation because the engine that I’m working on is actually Hydro locked and I’m taking the spark plugs out to get the water out of the inside of the engine. but I do put up pictures of what spark plugs look like and what it means when they look different. just came in from doing this. I have the tools,, the garage, and a compressor. All toll it took me an hr to do the whole job. Piece of cake, But thanks to this Video, I knew what to expect, and that made it easier. Thanks

You don't have to take all that apart to get to rear plugs, all you need to do is remove cover, then air filter box and line that goes over intake, then 6 bolts that hold intake in and just lift it just enough to the side so you can get to plugs.
I changed plugs on my 2017 Impala 3.6...
4 of the plugs are accessible without removing the plenum.
The front 3 and the driver's side rear plug can be done that way.
The center and left rear plugs cannot be accessed without loosening the plenum.
I did not need to unplug the coil wire connections....I took out the 10mm coil bolt and simply pulled each coil out with wire attached and moved them out of the way ....I did one at a time, replaced plugs one at a time, reinstalling the coil before moving on to the next coil and plug.
I went to AutoZone and bought a 5/8" magnetic 3/8 drive socket which was connected to a 10" 3/8 drive swivel socket.
This made it simple to remove and install the plugs as the magnet held the plug in the socket during removal and install.
I also only removed only enough connections to be able to unbolt the plenum and swing it just far enough to get to the last two plugs.
I did not need to remove the plenum entirely from the car.
I had the whole job done in about an hour to hour and a half.

Should I also replace the plug wires and coil packs? 92K miles and first tune up. What other things do I need to do for a tune up?
Well, there’s no wires to replace
And I don’t recommend replacing the coils because once you get this job done or you start doing it, you’re gonna realize how simple it is it’s not complicated nor is it difficult to replace coils even though you do have to take up the intake to do the back ones you’re gonna find that really removing the Intakes like a 30 minute job at most So I would just recommend replacing the spark plugs with OEM other than that, leave everything else alone

Went to take my engine cover off and noticed that it was a security bit that was needed for that 10mm screw. If you want to replace it, the measurements are M6-1.00 x 35mm for a suitable substitute.
Yes of course they are you can replace any fastener that you want and because it’s not around a moving component it won’t hurt to change it to a different type of head

I had to go and get the bit from a mechanic that I knew and that's what he called it. My maintenance background comes from planes and not cars so don't shoot the messenger.

while you are doing the plugs it's a good time to clean the mass air flow sensor and the throttle body. Just be very careful not to touch the mass air flow sensor, just spray it. The easiest way to clean the throttle body is to remove it, which is also easy, and you can get to the back of the butterfly which will be fairly dirty. When cleaning the throttle body, use throttle body cleaner, and don't move the butterfly around. These simple things will keep your car running and idling without codes showing up. Maybe The Clay Way has a video on one or both of those!

Hey do you recommend changing out the coil packs with changing the spark plugs? TRQ has a coil pack and spark plug tune up kit. Idk thought about changing just the plugs.
It’s not necessary coils generally have a long life if you can afford it , it doesn’t hurt, just keep in mind that nickels and dimes add up to dollars. It’s always best not to waste unnecessary money. That’s just my opinion obviously
By the way you’re absolutely right united we stand divided we fall!!!!! Divide and conquer seems to be the way of things nowadays. It’s really sad.

what is the right gap for spark plugs for 2016 chevy impala v6?
I don’t know that off the top of my head but there’s a white sticker underneath the hood that will give you the gap but you are supposed to be using platinum plugs original to the vehicle and they should not need to be gapped ....
AC Delco plugs are already set to the correct gap - .040”.

What is this due to?
The mechanic did not put silicone in the gasket, he said that the gasket remains intact
Is the noise in the purge valve an air leak?
Spray the intake with carb cleaner or brake cleaner while the engine is running, and if the engine idle increases, then you have a leak if it doesn’t, it’s OK I’ve had them purge solenoid’s make that TikTok tick-tock tick-tock tick noise in the past

Basically, you spray the stuff anywhere that something meets together like your intake around hoses and stuff…. All over the top of the engine. It will evaporate the only reason it would ignite is, if there is a spark, jumping somewhere other than that in a couple of hours it’s going to evaporate or suck it into the engine keep a fire extinguisher handy put it out immediately. it shouldn’t hurt anything even if it did catch on fire but that’s only happened to me one time out of a couple 1000 the thousand times I’ve done this and that’s because the guy thought he had a vacuum leak and he actually had a broken spark plug wire you do not have spark plug wires, so there should not be an issue.

80,000 to 100,000 miles you could do they now it won’t hurt, they are designed to go a 100,000 mile im assuming the owner’s manual will tell you for sure , I recommend using OEM plugs , I don’t often recommend OEM anything (most of the time won’t last any longer for the extra money ) because must everthing is only made in a few factories around the world , but OEM plugs already last 100,000 miles, quite a few times I tried others and they don’t last as long as OEM

Hey I know this is a shot in the dark. But I accidentally broke the only hose you didn't disconnect. The one on 6:46. Do you happen to know how to fix that? I got the spark plugs put in but now dealing with this. :(

Well when considering if I’m going to reuse a gasket or not I take a look at it if it’s flat I don’t reuse it if I do reuse it I put dielectric grease on it (Both sides) I reuse them all the time personally but I can’t see yours so I can’t tell you I mostly reuse them because I’m extremely cheap

I was going to change the plugs in the wife’s Acadia, but after seeing this I’m just going to buy her a new car, and it won’t be a sideways v6 next time.
Clay, have you ever pulled the injectors on a 3.6 LFX? If so, how difficult are they to remove? I understand you have to remove the fuel rail first, but may possibly need a puller to get each injector out of its bore.
Reason I'm asking is I have a '12 Impala with the LFX and every time it snows out (and ONLY then) the car starts misfiring and spits out a P0276 code. Apparently there's a TSB for this engine stating the injector harness rubs up against the transmission and can cause a short to ground, triggering the P0276 (amongst other codes pertaining to the different injectors.) The injector harness is run beneath the bodies of the fuel injectors, so in order to get the harness out, you need to remove the whole bank of injectors. Also some of the fuel rail tubing is not reusable and must be replaced when you remove the rail.

I went ahead and purchased a new set of injectors instead of purchasing the seals and the seal installation kit (replacing those seals sounds like a complete pain in the ass!!) Also the required non-reusable fuel lines, fuel pressure sensor, and a used front bank harness. I'm going to pull the intake and clean the carbon off the backs of the intake valves, then swap out all 6 injectors and front harness (and inspect the rest of the harness which hopefully is exposed when the intake is off.)
After that long-winded tirade, I thought I'd mention that on the W-Body Impala/Limited LFX's, you can access the rear coils and spark plugs without removing the upper intake...

Hey wagons sorry for not getting back to you sooner it’s been super busy the last two days no I’ve never remove the injectors out of these but I can’t imagine that they’re much different. Different than the other ones and yes they are a pain in the ass to get out they do pull straight out once you remove the keeper. I’ll take a look at this one tomorrow that I have in the shop and see what I can see
I just looked down at the injectors on this engine that I’m working on and I think you’re correct you pretty much have to pull them out I remember the last time I had to pull these injectors out of the cylinder head it was a real pain in the ass. I did however reuse all the fuel lines etc. etc. they are metal fuel lines I don’t know why they would have to be replaced. The injectors look like they’re extremely easy to Once you take the intake off

I don’t know them off the top of my head Brianna but they’re probably not any more than 25 foot pounds if that so just palm your quarter inch ratchet and snuck the bolts down you will be just fine
What was the problem with this impala
Mine is shaking while idling and sometimes
Shudders while driving
That is the same reason that I replaced this one you could possibly have a bad coil as well so check into that before you replace the spark plugs by using the scanner and seeing which cylinder is misfiring then switching the coil from one cylinder to another cylinder and if the misfire changes from one cylinder to another cylinder the coil is defective if not you need new spark plugs

No way to do that and really not worth it even if there was it will constantly be in the way. I know it seems like a difficult task to take the intake off but it’s no different than changing a set of brake pads..

@R Skip yea I agree I have a drop in filter and it works pretty well. I really don't see how a intake would change much especially bc the stock intake is already in a good spot and getting cold air anyway.

There’s many people that says that you can but to be honest with you I just did one of these and It only took me about seven minutes to takeoff so I would imagine even if you’re kind of inexperienced it might take you 10 or 15 it is extremely simple to take off and I’m certain you can do it I know it seems like a huge obstacle when you look at it but once you actually take it off you’ll be pleasantly surprised and very happy with the outcome

One note, have an 8inch socket extension for the back plugs. Just completed this an hour ago and the 10in was a little tricky to use on the back 3

That last tube you took off of the intake at around 8:00 minutes. Does anyone know what that is called? Hard plastic snapped on mine, and I can't find it in the GM parts breakdown
I broke one of the small tabs securing the brake booster line connector on the intake cover, do I have to get a whole new intake cover to fix this or is there a part I can order?
You could drill it and screw a nipple in it .

There is a torque rating for everything but tightening up spark plugs I’ve never torqued them down. You just snuck them up you do not over tighten them. I’ve never looked up the torque rating but I would have to guess it’s like 20 inch pounds not foot pounds when they get tight just turn them an eighth of a turn more than you should be good I hope that helps

I put just a small touch of Anti-sieze on ea plug as they went back in, and did an 1/8 after contact. Snug,, Not cranked down, unless you don't want to take them out next time.

Mostly because I got tired of arguing with people about what I said in my video and what Google says. Hopefully it doesn’t make you hate me . Bolt torque goes from the thread pitch and thread size. It’s a standard equation. If I was the gas it’s probably about 18 foot pounds

Skip through to the part of the video that you’re looking for never thinking about the person that produced it or made it and a 30 minute job turns into two days worth of work and when people skip videos it hurts the channel that made the video that is trying to help them they don’t understand that viewer retention is a big part of the algorithm. If the guy didn’t help you it probably doesn’t matter but if the guy did help you then it makes a humongous impact on the channel. This car uses platinum spark plugs, if u change them to iridium there will be a slight almost unnoticeable difference unless the car is tuned

I sure hope my plugs don't smell like nasty booty. 😂 It's important to use the correct plugs. Use what Chevy recommends. Dont go cheap, and get them from a reputable source. There's some fake plugs out there, so only go to a reputable parts store, or GM parts

He’s probably explaining that you can get to the back spark plugs without taking the intake off. But I don’t know how I would’ve possibly showed anything without taking the intake off.
And it was a long time ago that I did this procedure so I can’t tell you if you can change them without taking the intake off but I can tell you taking the intake off is very simple. But to each their own I’m sure there’s ways of doing things around other things that are in your way.
Personally I found with my Small amount of time repairing automobiles that it’s generally much easier just to take whatever is affecting your line of visibility, and accessibility that makes it much simpler to perform a procedure just get it out of your way. you will spend more time trying to work around it then what it would to just get it out of your way. With my little bit of experience on the subject. ……. I mean I only have about 30 years of experience I guess I need to wait another 20 before I start telling people how to do things

Quick question. I have a 2016 Impala ltz. Lately I will be at stop light and it just shuts off. I put it into park and push start and it starts back up. Any idea what that might be? And have you heard of any other Impalas doing that?
Well that’s probably not just a symptom of an impala. They put this particular engine in several makes and models and they are notoriously not good engines.
Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to help you with that because there’s a lot of different things that could possibly be.
But I think if you take it over to a shop and you pay them the hundred dollars it will cost to have them look at it it’s probably well worth it I would recommend starting with a tuneup if you’re over 90,000 miles it certainly will help and won’t be something un necessary to do.

You’re kidding right?…….. have you ever made a RUclips video? I don’t know how long it would take you but even making this video puts an extra 5 to 6 hours of just labor into doing the job then if you consider another 2 to 3 hours in editing that would make it a two day job.
For changing spark plugs that’s why you don’t often see people making videos about reinstalling something after they made a video of taking something apart.
No I don’t make perfect videos but I certainly try to make them the best I can and the amount of time that goes into even a short video like this one generally is a day or two.
I understand you don’t know that but if you ever wondered why that’s the reason why.
