It's always people who are illiterate on genetic alleles making these theories. Her parents can carry an allele. Dark hair is dominant which is more likely to occur than something like red hair, but even red hair can be passed down by parents that don't have red hair as long as they carry the allele, it's a 25% chance. Even if the kid doesn't have red hair, the allele still can be passed down to them, and their kids could have red hair.
Don't forget you can inherit traits from your grandparents, one of them could have had black hair.
