  • Nimona has been a film I have wanted to watch for a hot minute and since Netflix decided to release the full film on RUclips a day ago, I took that as a sign to sit down and finally watch it. And damn, I'm so glad I did. It has easily become one of my favourite animated films... scracth that, FILMS, ever! The characters, the animation, the comedy, the story telling, the world building, the QUEERNESS!! It ticks every single box for what I require in a film. WOW WOW WOW!!!! Plus, it made me SOB!!!! I'm obsessed!
Nimona is a 2023 American animated science fantasy adventure comedy drama film directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane from a screenplay by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor. It is based on the 2015 graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson. Set in a science fantasy world influenced by the Middle Ages, the film features the voices of Chloë Grace Moretz as the eponymous shapeshifting character and Riz Ahmed as her boss and former knight Ballister, with Eugene Lee Yang and Frances Conroy voicing supporting roles.

The trans allegoy in this film really impacted me so much. As a nonbinary genderfluid person I've never before seen myself represent in a main character role, or even positively before. At least not as openly and shamelessly and nimona does. The conflict and all the propaganda hating on us, calling us monsters, using us to scare children, it was all so close to home for me that it was inevitable to not cry on my first watch. But i am forever grateful for everything that this film represents and hope to see more positive representation for us in the future!!

Most of the time, we can shrug it off, we can pretend it's just an arrow in our leg, but sometimes it has to come out.

One of the best things about Bal and Ambrosious's relationship, is that the fact that it is a very obvious, open, gay relationship is never a focus point., or even directly addressed! This exact same story-line could work with any couple, of any gender without needing to change any details at all! They don't make a big deal out of the "gay" relationship, which I've always thought is the best kind of representation, because it normalizes it!

My sibling and their girlfriend when I showed them this movie:
    Them: Wait...IS THIS GAY?!
Me: Guys, I only show you the best movies life has to offer....of course it's gay.
Anyway, I ADORE this film. I don't know if you are aware, but it is also a graphic novel. Both are different, so I recommend reading it on your own time. Besides the queer message, I also like how the film tackles the idea of history. In the beginning, the audience is presented with a grown woman defeating the monsters. But, in reality, it was just a little girl pointing a toy sword. We don't know who, but most likely someone in power took this story and distorted it. We (at least Americans) like to believe that kind of stuff no longer happens, but that isn't true. That's why it's so important to preserve documents and artifacts detailing events from different perspectives.

Originally a Blue Sky's Animation, a studio attached to Fox that while they had about 70% done, Disney bought out 20th Century Fox. Under Disney, they wanted to make big changes and dragged the heels on the project until they decided to cancel it altogether. Thankfully, Annapurna was able to buy it, complete it and got Netflix to distribute it after a few years in limbo. Disney's loss and Netflix's gain! It's a great queer animated film that is daring and original, something that Disney hasn't been in quite sometime or really has the guts to make because they think about the almighty dollar. Nimona as a character is a big symbolic representation of trans/non-binary like the creator of the comic. Altogether, the fear of being othered is a bigger representation of those who hate the LGBTQIA+ for being different or as you mentioned, even race.

As for this film getting the Oscar, I'd 100% agree other than the fact that Spider-man: Across the Spiderverse is also nominated, and that makes it a tough call. Nimona and Spiderverse are both absolutely brilliant films, and they are head and shoulders above the competition for best animated film in 2023. I honestly can't decide which of the two is the better film. If they weren't up against each other, both of them would have been an easy pick for the Oscar this year. If Nimona doesn't win, it's not because it didn't deserve it, because it definitely does. It just sucks (awards wise) that it came out in the same year with another film of comparable quality and impact; but as a fan of animated films, 2023 was an embarassment of riches.

coolest bit is how the medieval environments clashing with the futuristic tech is symbolic for the institution clinging to ancient mindsets and understandings despite the fact they no longer need them, so good!

Watched this movie with my mom without knowing it was queer (my mom is slightly on the homophobic side that's why I haven't come out yet) she was a little taken aback with the first gay scene and she didn't talk about their relationship the entire movie, but she absolutely loved nimona's character and cheered her on without understanding the queer subtext. We had so much fun the entire movie and we were both a sobbing mess by the end of it...(and she never suggested to turn the movie off so that is a solid win in my book) That experience gave me hope that maybe if i ever do come out, i might have a chance with her. And that was the most precious feeling a movie could've ever given me.

The fact that the place where this movie is set is very modern but also very old-fashioned with the combination of electronics and medieval, I believe is a reference to show how no matter how much we grow and expand and evolve, a lot of people still have the hateful mindset we had way back in time.

I'm not queer, not even a emotional person. But i cried so much in this film, all about her life was so unfair. And the partners in crime/ father and daughter/ besties relationship was amazingly writed.
This film has so many layers, and delivers a message about something so specific, and at the same time it can be valid to so many topics. Beautiful and funny movie

Have you watched She-Ra and the Princesses of Power yet? This movie, Nimona, was based on a graphic novel by ND Stevenson. Stevenson was also the showrunner for She-Ra and the Princess of Power, he and his team did fantastic work on the show, not just the story, lore, and character development, but the art, music, and voice acting are fantastic. 🌈 You need to react to it if you have not watched it yet.

26:44 I just realised that this is such an allegory for whats happening with the few LGB people who are now trying to separate themselves from trans people not looking back and realising that our two communities (only saying that as they veiw them as separate) have always been at each otheres sides amd the same strawman arguments are just being repeated only this time those few feel like they need to spereate themselves from us (im nonbinary) to not be targeted

She didn't even hurt people herself as the monster. The people attacking her did more damage than she did. Absolutely beautiful film.

This story was so special to me when i first read it as a tween. i'm so glad the movie finally made it after so long in production; it's something really special that deserves to be shared, and it means even more to me now that i'm out as trans with the world being the way it is. Fun fact, the medieval-futuristic aesthetic was meant to represent the way that despite technology having progressed over time, people continue to cling on to old outdated ideas.
Also, every single person i've seen watch this has cried at some point while watching it lol. I don't really cry at movies, but even I get all teary-eyed every time I watch it (and i've rewatched it more times than I can count). It just hits different

i actually love how this film can mean so many things for different people. for me, it really hit me in the feels with my Tourette's and autism, especially with nimona's lines on how it feels to shapeshift. the first time i watched that scene, i was so refreshed because i finally had that feeling of Tourette's put into the right words.

This movie is among Tropic Thunder and Your Name as ultimate comfort movies of mine, it's so incredibly trans and gay, unsurprising given that the man who created the graphic novel it's based on is transmasc/non-binary. As a non-binary trans woman who's struggled with internalised homophobia in the past and continues to struggle with internalised transphobia, at the same time dealing with a father who claims to be an ally when what he does and says completely goes against it. Dealing with all of that, this movie means a great deal to me, and I can only imagine how much earlier I might've realised my identity if I'd had a movie like this when I was a little girl. What really struck me was that Bal saved Nimona from suicide with the three words that any trans person wants to hear above anything else; "I see you"

The best thing that I don’t feel like many people realize is that Nimona transformed into a phoenix when destroying the gun. She died on purpose as a phoenix rises as a fresh new bird from their ashes. She knew what she was doing and nobody in the town nor did many viewers seem to realize this because the scene happened so fast.

The first time I watched this…the pain of feeling the exact same as nimona when she became the beast…the hate from everyone. The destruction you want to cause and the pain you want to feel, to finally die and not have to live your life in pain every single day. It makes me cry, because I didn’t know how a film could replay my life so well.

I rarely go out of my way to watch movies, even when someone else recommends them to me. I can typically only watch something if someone else is there with me.
However, I saw two clips from Nimona on TikTok and felt so compelled to watch it, I pulled it up the next morning while I was getting ready for work (which ended in me crying my makeup off twice, because I never cry when watching movies and was not expecting this one to hit so hard)
My only regret is that I had started the movie a bit earlier so I could have given it my full attention throughout the movies, as it deserves.

This movie is so brilliant on so many levels - I love how the gayness is not the central storyline, we see it from the beginning and move on. I relate to Nimona as a queer-bi woman myself, not really fitting into a “category” and still being seen as strange even in the community you’re supposed to belong in. This movie is a hidden gem.

All the little details in the animation and dialogue and music that literally tell you what the twist is later in the film is so fucking perfect, and the fact you likely won't notice any of it until subsequent is even cooler.
