    As far as the grandma goes. Your point about the grandma is actually a theory for many fans. They think that she noticed that the beldam was trying to entice wybie and so she allowed them to move in so that it would take coraline instead. Especially since she lost her sister to the beldam

      @@niallnochill FWIW, in the book i'm fairly certain it's mentioned that coraline's parents lied and said they didn't have children so the landowner would rent to them. i think i'd give wybie's grandma the benefit of the doubt and say she wouldn't be willing to sacrifice someone else's child to save him- plus it's hard not to sympathize either way, since you just know she's been living in terror ever since he was old enough to play outside on his own...

  • @jackcollinsmartin4210
    @jackcollinsmartin4210 8 месяцев назад +852

    Something from the book that they cut out of the film:
    There's an even more horrifying eldritch entity. The house/portal itself. The small corridor/portal is a throat. Throughout the book, each time Coraline goes through the portal, it gets windier (is that a word?). Basically, whatever this creature is, it's waking up. And it's starting to breathe more and more. Not to mention that the walls are damp and filled with large chunks of things once the illusion drops.
    Also: The Beldam is scared of whatever this thing is. So is the Cat. Whatever it is, it's POWERFUL.
    There's a theory somewhere that the Beldam is a parasite inside of the creature. So she's not the big bad. Which makes everything even scarier.

    • @Ansixilus
      @Ansixilus 7 месяцев назад +173

      "There was no brick wall there now - just darkness, a night-black underground darkness that seemed as if things in it might be moving." ... "Coraline took a deep breath and stepped into the darkness, where strange voices whispered and distant winds howled. She became certain that there was something in the dark behind her, something very old and very slow."
      "The candle cast huge, strange, flickering shadows along the wall. She heard something moving in the darkness - behind her or to one side of her, she could not tell. It seemed as if it was keeping pace with her, whatever it was."
      ... ""Come on!" said the Cat "This is not a good place to be in. Quickly." Coraline turned her back on the door and began to run, as fast as was practical, through the dark corridor, running her hand along the wall to make sure she didn't bump into anything or get turned around in the darkness. It was an uphill run, and it seemed to her to go on for a longer distance than anything could possibly go. The wall she was touching felt warm and yielding more, and, she realized, felt as if it were covered in a fine downy fur. It moved, as if it were taking a breath. She snatched her hand away from it. Winds howled in the dark. She was scared she would bump into something, and she put out her hand for the wall once more. This time what she touched felt hot and wet, as if she had put her hand in somebody's mouth, and she pulled it back with a small wail."
      So yeah, the book is really, really good. I strongly recommend reading it, or better yet listening to the audiobook which was narrated by the author, Neil Gaiman himself.

    There’s a theory that Vermin or The Cat was once another child that lived at the Pink Palace but either was too suspicious of the Beldam or moved away before she could get him or had a living family or all three but since he interacted with the witch, he was a “ loose thread”. He died having lived a full life but his soul returned as a cat. He failed to save Wybie’s grandma’s sister and that’s why he stays close to Wybie. Both because he feels bad for his previous failure but also because he wanted to be there for Wybie in case the worst happened.

    believe it or not, the book is actually way scarier, they toned it down a lot for the movie.
    In the book, the door is full size, the hallway was completely dark, and when she was escaping, she got the impression it was breathing. When she felt the sides, she described it as "hot and wet, like a mouth"
    almost like it was a throat.
    There werent dolls either filled with sand, everything was flesh and blood. Even the Other Mother bled "black, tarry stuff" when the cat scratched out her eyes and clawed her up.
    When the Other Father was basically discarded, he didnt become a pumpkin. He turned into like this amorphous blob of flesh like a blobfish with loose eyes, and strands connecting his mouth, with stick arms and legs.
    Something thats also kinda neat, the Other mother's hair floated and drifted around her head.
    The hand, was also a flesh hand. There was even a scene where Coraline woke up after escaping, to see "a pale white thing scuttle down the gutter, and there were deep gouges in her window"
    the hand was trying to get to her.
    The first draft of the film's script was actually so faithful to the book, that the author Neil Gaiman suggested they make changes because it wouldve been way too much for a family film lol

    there are so many theories for this movie, and one of my favourites is that the well was another gateway to the beldam’s world.
    • the well looks VERY similar to the door tunnel
    • fairy/witch ring around the well - fairy/witch rings are believed to indicate portals to other worlds
    • beldams are considered a type of witch - ergo, witch ring
    • the button over the moon / lid over the well parallel - symbolising coraline/the key being locked into the beldam’s world
    • whybie says that if you fell down the well, “you’d see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day” - the beldam’s world is only ever nighttime
    • the doll making scene shows the doll coming to the beldam from a starry sky (the well), she then sends it back into the sky (to the real world)
    • the ending with the cat disappearing seems to suggest the other world is still accessible
    • the ghost girl DID say “there’s only one, and the beldam WILL find it” after all…
    so in coraline trying to get rid of the key, she pretty much sent it back to the beldam, and we have no idea what would come of it because the story ends here 😭

      all of the portals collapsed because the world was unstable.

    One thing I like about this movie so much is you can see it from both persepectives. As a kid, you see Coraline's parents as neglectful, mean, coldhearted, and rude towards their own child when all she wants is attention which is why seeing her being so carefree and happy in the other world makes you think along with Coraline " wow this world is like 10x better! ". But, as an adult you can kind of sympathize with Charlie and Mel ( Coraline's father and mother ). They have a full time job to try and make ends meet. Needing to buy food, pay bills for their new house, and with Charlie working on an old busted computer it makes it even more stressful cause anything can wipe all that progress and that anything just so happened to be Coraline pressing buttons without reading them. Granted they could have worded it better but sometimes parents just don't have time for their kids and when a kid like Coraline who is very hyper and needy for that attention doesn't get it, she throws a fit over it. She wanted the gloves but Mel didn't have the money for them hence why she told her to put them back and why she was shopping during a sale. She only was able to get them after they got paid for their garden catalogue. But as a parent you don't want to tell your kid that you don't have enough money for stuff. My mom never told us no to something because she didn't have the money for it, she was always say " maybe next time " or " maybe with her next paycheck ". As you grow older you can kind of see that her parents were never truly neglectful they just had very stressful moments when they were forced away from the only work that was making them money because Coraline was whining for them. But as we see things get better in the end, they start getting better income from their catalogue, thus they don't have to worry about money as much anymore and can start focusing on their child.

  • @ekuu8918
    @ekuu8918 8 месяцев назад +35

    My favorite interpretation is that the Other Mother is some kind of old-school faerie or fae creature. The fae are well-known for legends of stealing people (especially children), luring them with food or sweets, tricking them into agreeing to bargains, and sometimes stealing souls. And folklorically, stepping into a faerie ring of mushrooms (like the one around the well that Coraline steps into at the beginning of the movie) is one way you might accidentally be transported to their realm. This theory especially makes sense considering the original novel was written by an English man, Neil Gaiman, and implied to be set in the English countryside.
    In this interpretation, the Cat might be another fae creature in the shape of a cat, or it might just be that all cats are kind of magical. After all, they have a reputation for being able to get into places and seeing things that humans can't see; maybe any of them could talk if they went to the Other World.

    Yeah, her parents aren't bad, just very stressed. A move, an accident/injury, a deadline, pressure the catalog won't work out, and allusions to the fact they don't really have money at the moment and this catalog is going to be their income. As someone who has a mother who worked two jobs and was highly stressed a lot, as a child it was frustrating when she acted like that, but as an adult, I recognized she did a lot of things to ensure I was fed, had everything I wanted, and made sure we had good memories and vacations despite putting a strain on our finances. My dad was similar to Coraline's too. A little more playful, nicer, but there were times when he's trying to work and I'd annoy him because I was bored.

    There is a video speaking about the wallpaper you see in the very first scene with the doll making, where the wallpaper is a mother bird killing and eating it's chick, shown by the slit in the baby bird's throat and the blood imagery. It was meant to symbolise the Other Mother and how she eats the children as far as I could remember.

  • @AadenKDragon

    So even a month late, I have some notes.
    1) I'm 31. Last year, I accidentally fell asleep to the audiobook and it gave me some of the worst nightmares I've ever had. I've loved the book since I accidentally discovered it in my elementary school library and I fell in love with the movie the first time I saw it. The book still scares the shit out of me 😅 it is so much scarier than the movie
    2) there's a theory that the fog itself is a different entity. I thought it was interesting. This is a really big one for the book because the fog is specifically mentioned A LOT, even when it seems unnecessary
    3) there's a theory that as soon as Coraline stepped over the well and into the fairy ring of mushrooms, she disappeared from her world and the entire thing is done by the fairies. This only applies to the movie though
    4) if you notice, the Other Father is almost constantly eating. It's because he doesn't know the next time he's going to be able to eat because the Beldam steals children sporadically and lays everything dormant until a child has been found. He's also made of a squash.
    5) there's a really fucked up theory that the first time she goes through the tunnel (like the fairy ring theory) Coraline never actually made it back. She's trapped in a separate universe. Because after all is said and done the ending is kind of wrapped with a bow: Coraline goes home, the ghost kids are freed, and the residents are planting flowers in the barren garden. It's a plot to keep her happy so the Beldam can feed off of her life.

    “So we’re in the states” fun fact, coraline is actually originally set in England! It’s said in the book that coralines dad has to go into London for work. Also the “taffy from Brighton” is actually from Bristol.
    As a Pom I was admittedly a little disappointed when they made her American but I love the movie non the less. I also love the addition of wybies character and the dolls which are a huge part of the movie but both don’t exist in the book. I think laika did a wonderful job at adapting it

    One thing that Master Gaiman himself has verified is when he essentially alpha tested the story by giving it to a friend with a child because his manager told him it was too scary and it would never sell:
    The girl LIED about how creeped out she was, because her mother told her a friend wrote it "for her" as a bedtime story. The girl WAS too scared of the story, it WAS too scary for children, but it went to publication anyway because a little girl wanted to impress her mother... Basically, a real-life Coraline moment...

    4:30 Fun fact: The movie is an adaptation of a book of the same name from the iconic British author Neil Gaiman, who originally set it in England (most likely nearby London). They changed the location to US Oregon for the film, which I honestly find quite fitting of the tone of the story and art direction. Still, I find that Neil Gaiman's particular British charm absolutely till comes through in the movie (and mind you, I'm Portuguese, so I'm not biased towards any of these countries).

    Long ago I lived near Liaka Studios in Beaverton, Oregon. The studio was founded by the son of the founder of NIKE. The studio had a huge exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art. The monster in 'Kubo and the Two Strings was 37 feet tall. Coraline's garden set was huge, maybe 50-60 feet across. The dolls were 6 to 8 inches tall. Coraline's sweater was hand knitted out of sewing thread!!

    fun fact: in the book, which takes place in britain rather than the US, only one of the ghosts has wings in the dream sequence, and the other three eat bowls of ice cream while she has honeysuckle. implying that the beldam doesn't just take human children, but children of the fae as well. and if you know anything about the fae, the fact that the beldam takes _their_ children and they can do nothing to stop her is _far_ more terrifying than anything else about her.

    Idk how many people know this but the cursive on the cake saying "welcome home" is Particularly intresting. The double loop on the O in home is because in old cursive when you have a double loop in a letter thats only ment to have one the word is proclaiming a lie. On the other hand the one loop is a truth. Thus forth Coraline is "welcome" but she is not "home"

  • @KpopsFatherTaehyung
    @KpopsFatherTaehyung 3 месяца назад +3

    The cake the other mother gave coraline had “welcome home” with a double loop on the o of home but a singular loop on the o of welcome
    double loop means it’s a lie. which means coraline IS welcome, but she is NOT home!
    also there’s a theory that the cat is actually evil and in the end was trying to stop coraline from destroying the key, but when he saw that she wanted to throw it in the well, aka the theorized other portal to the other world, he felt at ease knowing that coraline just returned the key to the other mother. which is why at the end of the movie, he goes to the other world.
    also another theory, when coraline escapes the mirror and goes home, some people say the other mother was too calm and that’s cause she didn’t actually return home and it was just an illusion played by the other mother, which insinuates her magic seeping into the real world and her having some control there.
    also, idk if you noticed, the entire song the other father sang was foreshadowing/warnings “she’s a DOLL, our eyes will be on coraline” he was telling her what awaits her and that they’re watching her
    just some cool stuff i wanted to point out! hope you read this comment

    Neil Gaiman, the author of Coraline, writes some really interesting stuff. I've read several of his short stories or novels that are like this. You take a little mythology, a little folklore, a little good old fashioned fantasy and then you have this Cthulhu vibe running just underneath the surface. So it's just like those nightmares I'm sure we've all had where everything seems familiar but it's just something off that makes it ten times more scary than the goriest slasher film you ever saw. His novel The Ocean At The End Of The Lane does something similar to Coraline.
