“Control” is such an overlooked film and it’s truly one of the only times in a bio pic where the actor looks like, behaves and encapsulates his subject.
Top ten song of all time - I'm so glad you got around to this. I agree with all your comments - those drums, that bass, that voice. I honestly don't think Morrissey wrote a lyric as moving and helplessly profound as "people like you find it easy"
*Everybody* loves Stephen Morris. (As a shamelessly name-dropping aside, I once had a chance to briefly meet him and Gillian - it was for an Other Two interview. They're both just delightful people with a bone-dry Mancunian sense of humour.)
That shimmering reminds me of the Cure - PlainSOng (opening track of Disintegration) and always wondered if it was a shout out to this (plain, but brilliant, song being appropriate for Joy Division)
You have to imagine, back in the late 80s, Joy Division had long since become New Order, lots of us goth kids had listened to Unknown Pleasures and Closer until the cassettes fell apart, and you would occasionally see the video for Love Will Tear Us Apart, and then in 1988, Substance came out and singles like Atmosphere, Dead Souls and Transmission became accessible. The video for Atmosphere is quite beautiful.
You make a good point about the accessibilty of music. Before the internet, magazines and compilations were some of the only ways to find out about music from the past, even the recent past.
This so good. Icy, shimmering synthesizers. That vocal. God I love Peter hook forever cuz of that bass part. Another great song by joy division is walk in line or exercise one
A link to the YT video of Joh Peel announcing Ian Curtis' death ruclips.net/video/9WHbmzMUaAI/видео.html ...it wasn't Atmosphere though that he played, it was New Dawn Fades...as you will hear. RIP Ian but, for me, more so RIP JOhn Peel...best DJ in history (he did a nightly 1hr broadcast to the Soviet Union on the BBC World Service that was for many Soviets the thing that allowed them to see the real west (at that time) and he was a champion and reason we now know of music we now think of as 'normal'...from Metal, Blues, Dance, Techno, Punk, Indie, Avant Garde, Industrial, Dub Step etc etc etc etc....
I strongly recommend you watch Anton Corbijn's spellbinding video that accompanies this track if you get the opportunity. I've never seen another visual that fits a piece of music so perfectly. Great reaction by the way.
Make Mondays (Blue Monday) - New Order/Joy Division reaction days. I mean, if Moz gets a day a week for reactions, then surely JD/NO are more than worthy of their own day as well. Come on, just do it!
this made me go and check John Peel's Millennium 50, Joy Divison / New Order had 9 songs out of the 50, The Smiths and The Fall joint 2nd with 3 each. The Fall songs were How I Wrote Elastic Man, Totally Wired, and The Classical, if youre thinking of trying one of theirs.
One of the best albums of all time I got the from factory records I want I San fansco from az and they say much the to 12 inch and asked do any samples thanks I want 10 of everything
A great song that is a bit of a departure from Martin Hannett's usual thin stark production, when you listen to this I think it outlines how Joy Division would have been much more successful and accessible if Martin had used richer fuller sound on their other records. I am one who loved the Joy Division thin tinny stark sound, but to many they were a difficult listen.
Mass Production by Iggy Pop please? Sad fact: Iggy's The Idiot was the last album poor Ian Curtis played. But please don't let that put you off, it's beautiful, if elegiac.
This played at the end of the movie Control when his wife finds him 😭😭hits different after you watch it, you really should
It's such a powerful closer. The way this song cues with the camera lingering on the outside shot of the house as we hear her screams. Incredible.
Try watching Hounds of Love. Now THAT'S an ending. Best ever use of a song in a film for me.
“Control” is such an overlooked film and it’s truly one of the only times in a bio pic where the actor looks like, behaves and encapsulates his subject.
I was only 14 in 1989. It was The first time i listened to this song. I played it at my father's funeral. God rests his and Ian's souls...
Brilliant Nick, a desolate gem of a song, an absolute Masterpiece
I love this so much it hits deep man propper deep.
It's amazing to me that given the sheer brilliance and transcendence of this song, that it isn't as lauded as Love Will Tear Up Apart
Ah, that feeling when you hear that descending bell sound for the first time - like heaven.
It's a masterpiece... as are all songs from Joy Division, so much power and thought in the lyrics and music. Thank you!
I love this song.Today i am 61 - In 1979 November i saw Joy Division at Guildford Civic Hall Surrey England
A masterpiece just beautiful

Lovely song. One of my faves.

A close sounding sound is found in "Pictures of you" from the Cure.

Magic yes Anton Corbjin if I remember correctly directed but an eternal eulogy for a fellow suffering epileptic. 🙏🎵🚬

Such a wonderful song, conveys both hurt and joy/hope in equal measure for me
My favourite Joy Division song. Thanks for this, Nick.
Simply masterpiece
Wow! Never fails to draw emotions from me…. 🎚️

Great reaction by the way.
Control was a good film did you see that ☺
@@dominicaaaaa5547 Yes, it was really well done. I thought that Sam Riley did a fantastic job of portraying Ian Curtis, which is no easy task.
@@timroberts5211 its great but come on...Hurt by Johnny Cash
@@ostrichman Hurt by Cash is good, but not at this level, sorry, my opinion.

Yesss I'd love to watch!
Generally considered to be the best Joy Division song by far.
You should have reacted to the video, it's beautiful
As Martin told him, slower but faster
Beautiful track and great reaction as usual Nick
1:48 that Christmas 🎄 feel!
Beautiful

Such a great song!! You should check out Heart And Soul or Isolation next from the Closer album
Such a sad song, you could feel the depression and melancholia in this. And definitely a future influence on Interpol and NYC?
You should react to "Decades" by Joy Division, it's a banger.

Scott Walker was so great!
