YES but fellow Factory band ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK...produced 4 of the best albums EVER Made BACK TO BACK: 1 ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK; 2 ORGANISATION; 3 ARCHITECTURE & MORALITY and 4 DAZZLE SHIPS. With sleeves designed by JOY DIVISION Art Director PETER SAVILLE.....WORLD CLASS!!!!😍😍😍😍
They were so lucky that there were people around that understood their vibe. Manchester was almost the centre of music from 10cc to the Smiths and Happy Mondays / Stone roses. This blew me away as a 13 year old !! I will never lose that.
A means to an end and 24 hours are my2 personal favourite tracks on closer but the whole album is fantastic. Definitely in my top 5 albums of all time.
Made a list last year due to the 40 years thing and this came in as #2. Steve Morris is a bit of a kraut rock drummer. There´s a beautiful documentary about drummer Klaus Dinger of the band Neu! that I know you will appreciate, featurin interviews with Steve Morris and Iggy Pop among many others. It's called The heart is a drum". Loved your reaction!
Thank god for Hammett because without him there is a strong likelihood they would have gone down as another obscure punk band of the 70’s. Although, even their pink sound sounded very different from the average punk band. Curtis’s lyrical content and diverse sound made them different from the pack, but Hammett brought them to the light of their musical abilities.
It really does sounds like a suicide note and it's heartbreaking they didn't take the lyrics seriously, really a member of the band said they thought it was "just lyrics", sad..
Thanks for the great reaction. I listened to Closer first, and I've always been concerned that Unknown Pleasures would sound a bit 'Pollyanna' in comparison.
I grew up Catholic. We went to check every Saturday for the 5:30 evening mass. Every time I listen to this song and Decades I can't help but feel like I'm back in church. The tone and cadence of his singing sounds just like certain songs that the priest would sing. On some level I find that disturbing and then you take the lyrics and overall feel of the songs and yeah... Heavy stuff. I wish Ian could have received the help he so desperately needed.
And his band mates sometimes 'dared' to ask: "Ian, everything OK?" "Yeah I'm fine... it's just poetry." My favourite JD song, btw. The rhythm section is rousing, the guitar is relentless. "Gotta find my destiny, before it's get too late." Sadly, Ian lost control.
Can we just agree about Joy Division having made 2 of the best Albums ever made ?
guess we agree then.....love from Amsterdam my man!!

My favourite album of theirs, there's no bad songs on this album.
An extraordinarily brilliant band - the sound of my youth.

Yes, please do Decades and The Eternal next. Also, not sure if you’ve done Atmosphere yet or not.

The holy trinity.

hey Nick could you react to atrocity exhibition from closer?
Yes I could!
...... no words...
This album is incredible, but I somewhat agree with Ian's sentiment that Joy Division peaked with it. Where could they have gone after this?

I like decades better
