    Please note...Groceries?
I Always bring my own shopping bags! Of course!
An expensive item of clothing? I expect it to be wrapped! Here in Ireland ALL clothing is wrapped in paper bags!!!

Hello. Am halfway through watching this today. In regard to your shopping experience I am surprised but here in America it's all over the place on such issues. I would've thought the shop would've at least folded the lovely dress in tissue paper. If they want corporate plastic at least give you a choice especially if they're charging you for the bag, charge a tiny bit more for a cloth bag.
I love your cottage & what you've done with the land. I look forward to visual pleasantness & peace watching your videos.

Gm Collette from a small coastal town in Texas. Ive been following u now for several months & don't remember how I found u but ever since I've been hooked. I've got a tiny little shop on Surfside beach & we only have paper bags for our customers. Each morning I see all the plastics & spend time cleaning & picking up trash before opening the shop. It's never-ending! I truly enjoy ur rants & I adore ur laughter. Because of u I've planted my first 4 trees!!! Thank the goddess!!!

I am 66, I had no children because I felt we were too many already, I still drive the first new vehicle I ever bought. A 1976 model, I still use the first microwave I ever bought. 1986 model. Most every thing in my house and garden is used or made by me, except for the necessary electronics that are now bound up in our lives.
I cry for our Mother, we are losing our insects here in Oregon and with them goes the newts, salamanders, frogs, dragon flys and the insect eating birds. I haven't seen a nighthawk in 40 years. And yet the Audubon Society says nothing about the County spending billions on "Vector Control" to kill those very insects.

First of all, LOVE the dress! You know, I could hardly wait for your "rant" this morning. As always, I knew it would be words of wisdom. As a life long protester who was a teen in the 60's, I've been used to "eye rolling" for a very long time. I agree with all you have said here. I come from a long line of female "troublemakers" who marched and wrote letters and carried signs and even went to jail for what they believed in. My great aunt was a Suffragette who worked for a woman's right to vote. My mother, who mostly raised 4 children alone, fought for a woman's right to work and better pay. And I've protested and boycotted and marched and even got thrown in "clink" once when I was 16 for joining a sit-in at USF. But if we don't do what we can to change things, then we have wasted our power. Okay, that was my rant. There are so many strong, outspoken women who are drawn to Bealtaine, it warms my heart. Blessings to all.

Thank you so much for another brilliant video! I always take reusable bags where I know I am going somewhere to buy something. I celebrate Samhain with my children, doing most, the older ways and teaching them about the real celebration. But I don't go out and but their costumes, they tell me what they want to be and I knit or crochet them. They have a costume that they play in even after Samhain. Blessings to you! And Thank you for voicing about what could easily be changed for the better.

I'd rather be on the "outside" being happy than "inside" where I'm unhappy. I've never liked being told what to do, what to wear, what I should and shouldn't do, who I should and shouldn't like, etc. I can't tell you how many times I have walked away from something because I felt like I was being forced into doing or saying something I didn't want. We always have a choice, we need to use it to benefit ourselves as well as those around us.

Since the Greek government (I live in Greece) finally got round to charging a fee for plastic bags people have been switching to cloth bags. (How about a Bealtaine Cottage bag?) But no plastic at all would be the ideal situation.
By the way, I love your vlogs! The garden is paradise and an inspiration! I truly hope to create something half as peaceful in my small plot.

Yes! However, when one buys an expensive item of clothing, that is a bit more than a few potatoes and a can of beans, so one expects appropriate wrapping for the journey home!

Rant on Colette! The world needs to hear it. If more consumers would speak up we could collectively make a change. I am catching up on your vids as I only found you not that long ago so you probably won’t see this, but wanted to add my 2 cents to your cause so to speak. It’s a comfort to know your here & to join you on your walk abouts in your little piece of paradise you’ve created. The Goddess Blessings upon you 🌿🧚

Plastic bags, plastic tags, plastic hangers, all should be banned from leaving shops in the hands of customers. Plastic pots should be returnable to and reused by garden centres too. Plastic bottles and packaging should be returnable to supermarkets.
My children were astonished when they saw " witches" in a chain card shop window in Newark, Nottinghamshire. In 1984 we saw the plastic tat for the first time and that was when American style Hallowe'en "celebrations" hit our shores. It amazes me how quickly legitimate, ancient festivals can be hijacked when international companies realise the potential for gain. My children and now my little grandson have never taken part in it.

Hi Collette , well to your issue on carrying essential shopping , We have two large baskets like you have there and several hessian bags that get carried in our car at all times . I never know if I'm going to buy more than my list so if I do , I am always bag under my arm . If I am in the store and We need more bags I will put my basket down walk out and get another bag . I do see certain shops have reintroduced compostable plastic bags that we were provided back in the eighties and they cost the same in production as to plastic . What strikes me is that the public are very sold down the river by the merchants of this world . The non thinking public are made to believe and take part in ever lengthened seasonal shopping , gearing up for merchant made up events , Halloween , Christmas , when we should be observing and creating our environments for the better . Like you I buy all my clothes in charity shops to save hundreds of litres of water from further being wasted in producing the clothes mountains . I don't mind looking a little scruffy as I work the gardens around our property everyday . As to travel we keep everything local and own a second hand car to travel . We all must cut down on consumerism , travel only when necessary , be responsible as individuals to Mother Earth, and a very good rule is BUY WHAT YOU NEED AND NOT WHAT YOU WANT. All the best Paul and Alexis xx

I'm old enough to remember when feed sacks (chicken feed) was shipped in cotton bags that were printed in colorful designs. It was done to help families struggling with money and many housewives took advantage of that. Both my sister and I very proudly wore the feed bag dresses our mother made. They were beautiful as all things handmade with love are. She was an excellent seamstress. She made quilts from the feedbags too, and a "store bought blanket" was something I found out about when we moved to town and had to give up country living for a few years. So many changes through the years and I'm not sure many of them were ultimately for the better. Rant on Colette. Many more than you know hear and understand your message. Blessed be to you and Jack. Thank you for welcoming us, me, to your sanctuary.

Thanks for the words you share at the end, this advice is so pivotal and important, I needed to hear that today because we all have things we are passionate about and yes, we must chose our battles wisely and then when we have gone into battle and come out, we must go on with our lives and do all we can within our power! I think it is such a shame how wasteful our world is, from food, to the clothing industry, and just so many many things! Good for you for standing up and expressing your thoughts, it might not bring about a change but at least you've tried and one day if you do see that that shop has changed to paper bags, you'll know you were the catalyst! Colette, I am happy to report that New York State, following Hawaii and California, will ban plastic bags beginning in March 2020, barring, of course, legal challenges from vested interests. Several local communities here already have this policy in place. This denotes, I think, a growing awareness of the issues you're talking about, but still there is much to be done to raise the consciousness of the average person. Lately I've been appalled by how much plastic packaging enters my life, even from organic products for my (small NYC) garden, vitamins and nutritional supplements. I've begun writing "wholistic" companies asking if they couldn't possibly consider some other means of packaging, or support the research for biodegradable polymers. As you say, there's much we can't do anything about, but I take action where I can.

You are too funny, the way you crack yourself up cracks me up. I totally agree with your sentiments and assessment of the situation. I, like you have also lived on the outside of things because I’ve always wanted to keep my own counsel, and it hasn’t bothered me one little bit either. Not that I’ve ever had a problem socializing, I just need quite a lot of time alone and I’m really not into small talk. Where I live ( central Louisiana, USA ) they don’t offer paper bags either so this is a timely reminder to put some reusable bags in my car and hope they allow me to use them at the local Walmart. I have quit buying bottled water and now use my own big berkey water filter to fill up a reusable flask. There is actually quite a lot we can do, but “ they “ do make it difficult. We don’t even have a recycling place here. I look forward to part two ! Blessings 🌸☀️👏🏻

Great words Colette! I love your rants. I've noticed more cafes have paper straws now. I love how that simple change is gaining favour. Our supermarkets here in Australia still provide plastic bags (for a small coinage) for people that don't have their own bags. Apparently whilst this bag change over was occurring the cashiers at the stores were getting verbally abused by customers having to pay a few cents for a plastic bag. Some folks are just miserable and don't care one bit. I have a gorgeous colourful hemp belt I bought a few years ago. It looks like it's from another era, the 60's. I love it! xo

Plastic bags have been banned for a while in Newfoundland Canada. I went once to Walmart and forgot my bags and everything was put in paper bags , which tore on the way back to the car. Learned to be more organized, always carry bags in the car now! Agree about the plastic. It has to be ordered by government because otherwise companies will not change unless they have to.

Hello Colette! First off all let me thank you for your wonderful channel and above all for your effort to propagate permaculture.
Now about plastic bags and corporate decision making... the only language they understand is money. And as long as we keep going to stores and/or bussinesses that still use plastic bags, we are giving them our money, we are agreeing to their policies. If you would walk out of that store without buying that dress because they didn'''t have a bag to put it in..... that would make them think. Only when they will start loosing customers because they don't use paper bags, only then will they change their practices... Boycott bussinesses that still use plastic bags.

Colette, do you remember why shops switched from paper to plastic? When it was paper bags there was the huge problem of deforestation to source the pulp to make them. Even pine plantations are not sustainable because of the natural land that has to be cleared and the acid levels building up after the pine is planted making it almost impossible to return to Mother Earth. Cloth bags are the way to go. They can be rolled up into a tight wad and put in your every day bag. It's hard to tread lightly on this Earth.

Return the item on the spot for a full refund and tell them why. Money talks, if they had lost money at point of sale because they are not providing the consumer with an alternative to plastic they might prick up their ears. Personally I bring my own bags everywhere and if I'm caught out without my bags then I don't buy. Which often enough works in my favour as I realize I didn't really need that item to begin with and keeps the impulse shopping in check.

Dear Collette, I have never fit in in my life I have always stood out and it was never a very comfortable place to be. But I am 66 now and I embrace my uncomfortable place on the outside. As a Wiccan in the Bible Belt of the USA I am certainly on the outside!
Many years ago I traveled to Costa Rica and no shops had bags of any sort. If you were shopping, you brought your shopping bag with you. Then Walmart established a corporate presence and now there are plastic bags everywhere. Now seriously, bags of all sorts, both paper and plastic, are a horrible thing to do to our Mother although at least we can compost the paper bags. The proper thing to do is accept responsibility for your own self and take a reusable bag with you when you shop. This is a decision I made years ago and if I forget my shopping bag I carry my stuff out without a bag and I don’t give a hoot what people think. Choose your battle and equip yourself so you don’t have to accept any bag. Mine are canvas mostly although I have a nylon one that folds very compact so it fits in my purse.
I love your permaculture installation and hope that if you ever come to the US you will visit mine. I have been establishing a tall grass prairie here. Being a rebel means you will never be bored!

Thank you for this. The ever increassing distance from our ancient inner awareness that our interactions with Earth are sacred, is, I believe, directly related to the increase in mental and emotional illnesses. It is important to speak up. Well done.

Thank you, I am from the UK. What a paradigm shift. At first I was thinking "But every shop gives out plastic bags" then when I heard in southern Ireland the shops gives out paper bags I was then thinking why can't we (UK) do the same. Then it dawned on me..... yes how much corporate plastic film coated lies are we given. Plastic bags are just the tip of the iceberg what else do we subconsciously just go along with. I just wanted to thank you.

You are a beautiful, spirited, spunky rebel and your legions join you in solidarity and strength. Blessings and continued constructive ranting! Hooray for "not fitting in" and for continuing to make a "fuss" about injustice & greed!

I agree. As to dress, I may be considered the mediochre as I don't have a style except for whatever I get from hand-me-downs. Nothing stylish or even smart. I wouldn't stand out in a crowd unless it is for scruffy, unmatched and unimpresive. But I don't mind. I did make a skirt the other day though out of a pair of trousers worn inside the thighs. I unpicked it and added colourful fabric. Now I have a very different and unique skirt ready for winter. That's kind of how I go with clothes. Don't often even find things my size in the charity shops....I don't bother looking in highstreet shops. There is not much for the high waisted pear shape there...nothing modest or flattering anyway. Do love YOUR style though. x Gorgeous painted stones.

Wise words indeed. It’s hard to believe that M&S don’t provide paper bags! Even shops like Primark do. I very occasionally buy from Moonsoon who have been using paper wrapping for years. That’s one shop off my list then. 😡. I’m a rebel too and frequently get myself into hot water because of it, but will continue until my dying day. Good on you, we need more rebels in the world ❣️

Good afternoon Colette and Jack I agree with you on the use of plastic bags I always take cloth bags with me when shopping. For years I have purchased underwear and clothes from M&S but I do think twice now because I always think of were these items have been made and if the workers get a fair deal wage for their work. I was born in the 50's and never knew about Halloween my Mam didn't believe in it or like it But I have to hold my hand I do have a bowl of sweets for any children calling because a lot of people make a big thing of it in England and It's not nice to be mean to Children . It's been raining since 6am today and still coming down hopefully we will have your nice day to come Blessings to you Colette and Jack xx

Well said. Doesn't make sense that a store only offers a plastic bag when a paper bag could be placed in a compost. Here in America the slogan was "reduce, reuse, recycle" but only the recycle bit was really pushed on us and there are a lot of recycling plants closing down. They don't want the crap anymore -- especially when people don't clean the glass, metal and plastic properly. But commercialism didn't embrace the "reduce" or "reuse". Instead they make stuff cheap and fragile so people go out and buy stuff again and again. Shoot -- I remember my Mom darning our socks when we were little. I'm pretty sure most people don't do that anymore; far easier to go and buy a new pair. Blessings to you and Jack. I still expect a little fae to pop out of the greenery; or at least I would like to think so. Your cottage and garden would be a safe refuge.

I'm of the age where everything was placed in paper bags, boxes and the milk came in GLASS. Leaves, were burned or mulched and grass clippings were left or raked. This was how it was done ~ I'm talking here in the U.S. Then came a New Generation and said, here, let us introduce you to Plastic ~ hmm 😒 Moral of the story is the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it!" 💙💙💙

Thank you so much for all what you expressed in this video. Nowadays, everything is mostly about being uprooted, forgetting about what might be good for people, societies and the environment. Nothing, or very few things, about real knowledge without an economical and financial purpose. We need to keep on fighting and, like you do, we should resist so that we can create. Greetings from Brittany, France. Chris.

I feel the same about plastic bottles. I always chose to opt for glass or to just do without because the most damaging thing for the planet, animals and humans IS PLASTIC. Stopped buying Pellegrino and Ketchup amongst many other things as soon as the package changed to PLASTIC.

Colette, your rant reminded me of a line from a movie..." I am as mad as Hell and I am not going to take it anymore!"
maybe, just maybe if more people would express their view ( like you have) things might start to change for the better.
The sad thing is, it is all about the money. Viewing the photos of beaches and wild life destroyed by plastic pollution is horrifying.
I was determined to try and help make a difference by carefully recycling my glass, paper and plastic items. Only to find out that all the items were dumped into the same bin and then hauled away to some land fill to be buried or dumped out at sea. It infuriated me. I was told by the owner of the trash company that it is "NOT COST EFFECTIVE", so plastic is no longer melted down and re-processed.
How do you put a price on the future of this planet and the generations to come.
