You've just now literally inspired me to finally make my own LEGO room. I've been hesitant for a while, not knowing for sure if I wanted to sacrifice an entire room to this hobby... But you've totally convinced me! Fun videos :)
Top tip on the Billy bookcase. Add a washer to either end of the shelves when assembling between the shelf and ends, and you can fit 3 baseplates across on a shelf.
When I moved in 2019, I purchased 6 of the Billy Bookcases and it was the best decision ever. I’m up to 11 now. They were such a great investment and look amazing displaying my LEGO collection. I highly recommend them! However, I had NO idea that there were third party companies that made LEGO displays specifically for the Billy bookshelves. For my parts storage, I use the Papimax drawers and I really like them. They aren’t aesthetic, but they’re functional!
I’m definitely very envious of how nice and organized your display is. Mine is kind of a mess lol. Currently my only shelf is a bookcase also, though it’s certainly not as nice as your Billy bookcase or Kallax unit.
When it comes to dusting I use that slime that car detailers use. Just mix borax, Elmer's school glue, a lil water and optional food coloring so u can easily see the dust ur removing
Also consider shopping for used/ secondhand furniture! You can probably even find someone selling the Ikea piece you wanted at a cheaper price, and it’s better for the environment than buying new 💚
Great video! However as part of the "zero dust" crowd, I'm still looking for solutions to display several Star Wars UCS sets and large MOCs under glass!
I recently upgraded my 5x5 Kallax to 4 Pax units, the 22" deep kind, to fit larger sets like Hogwarts, City Gardens etc. Over my desk I also have 6 Lack shelves (40" long each), 2 rows of 3 each with about 15 inches height gap. Having 3 of the lack shelves in a row is quite something. I have my Diagon alley plus all the 2020 hogwarts castle sets on display, plus room for much more. Another fun option from Ikea are the picture frame items Mellosa shelves but in clear. I have 7 stacked above each other, perfect to fit 3 speeds champions cars each.
These are all great suggestions Holly. Dusting is a huge headache, especially if you procrastinate on doing it. (I know from experience.) Regarding bookshelves, I do not recommend the ones sold at Walmart, especially if you put books on them. The weight from books takes a toll on them, I know from experience. I had one collapse after a move. As someone else mentioned, the ultimate LEGO collecting essential is more space, especially if you want to display your collection.
If you want to cut a hole in your shelf, I'd recommend looking into a "multi tool", in my case, a Makita multi tool. I'm not fully sure; so definitely do some research before you buy, but it seems like it would be the perfect tool for the job
My go to lego storage - Bunnings, Montgomery 8 Compartment Storage Box Organiser. They are $9.95 each and in a 3 pack for $25. Prefect sized compartments and the partitions/ dividers are fixed so no tiles slipping under the dividers...
Really helpful to get some storage suggestions. I have reached a point where whilst I have my own office, which will be my Lego display space as well - I have literally stopped building Lego sets as I have nowhere to store/display them!! I am halfway through building the UCS Millennium Falcon, which I know will be a huge storage commitment. I have 3 huge storage boxes in the loft, full of Star Wars sets, both investment and personal but can not really build any more if them until I sort done display furniture. My keenest want is to build my Betrayal at Cloud City set, but I know if is huge, wide and will take up loads of space - I currently have my MBS Mos Eisley simply sitting on the floor as it has nowhere to go! You are definitely right that you reach the point of having to think about the size of the set and it’s display implications before building it!! I been looking at the IKEA website recently and I think it’s the way to go - thank you for the suggestions - I think KALLAX is a good option as it is deep as well as wide. Happy building/displaying everybody!
Great video! I needed this. Don't really want to have my LEGO dusty. Thanks for the advice Holly! I'll be sure to use your link when I buy the display cases!
I use soft bristle paint brushes for dusting off my collection. When it comes to putting a set away I just put it in a big zip lock bag and into a tub container. I never want to part out the pieces again just in case I want it back out or it sky rockets in price. I bought Ninjago Dawn of Iron Doom for $10 way back and it jumped in price. I had to build it from scratch and it was true torture. I was able to flip it for some old LOTR sets but I never want to experience that again.😅
the fabrikor ikea cabinets are great. a little more expensive but they are far more dust proof and deeper. the shelves are adjustable aswell. i just put rivendell in the longer one and it fits perfect. and i have the lion knights castle in the taller one so they can fit some larger sets. the dust free was a must for me cause im rather pedantic
I recently moved into my own place, and instead of going the ikea route for shelving, I went the bunnings route. The garage shelving units, like the ones from pinnacle, are much wider and deeper. And while yeah they aren't as pretty, for mass storage on a budget they look fairly decent, and with a bit of work, you could probably hide the industrial look to make them pretty. Unfortunately they don't have doors, but I had to make sacrifices due to the sizes of some of the sets (and other collectables). I am curious about those drawers though, I haven't gotten into spare pieces storage yet.
The Pinnacle shelves from Bunnings (and Officeworks) have the advantage that light from above goes through the gaps between the LEGO builds, for a much better display effect. The solid bookshelves limit how close you can put the shelves because some sets get lost in the dark at the back. Also, you can get the Pinnacle shelves on wheels, so for Harry Potter or Cafe Corner builds you can show the front, but turn them to reveal the interiors.
Thank you for the informational video, I just started getting into Lego and the info on the display stands/cases was very helpful. I looked at all 3 websites you provided and yeah wicked bricks being specific to kits makes it much easier to find the stand for a specific build, but the shipping is killer.
I love the Billy bookcase but one thing I'd change is the Oxberg doors. IMO the Morliden doors are much better (Edit: Just found out Morliden's been replaced by Högbo). They have a smaller frame around the whole thing so you can see more of your sets. Here in the UK, we have deeper Billy bookcases that are 40cm deep and it sucks that they're not available in a lot of other countries. Most places seem to have 28cm deep ones. Not even Sweden has them. How does that make sense?! Ikea's from their country
I remember hearing Wicked Brick switched from real LEGO studs to fake studs on their minifigure displays... Is this true (hard to find info of a switch online) and does that influence your preference?
Yep, I noticed it on the last two orders I got. When it comes to display cases and ship stands it doesn’t effect anything, but for minifigure stands especially for the expensive figures it makes it harder to justify. I swapped out the studs in a case I have for a single figure to be safe, and won’t put any of my most valuable on the stand with fake studs. If I get another tiered minifig stand for my Kallax, it will be from tricked out bricks since they seem to use offical studs.
Hey Holly! I would like to know what you do when you find a really odd piece in you collection and don't know where to store it because ther are no others alike. Thanks!
Hey Holly i love your channel and your collection. I recently bought a Kallax windows from Wicked Bricks but im disapointed. The magnet won't fit and stand correctly on the acrylic fixation and the packaging are full sticky tape and no protect with film. I see there changing the type of fixation and you have both. Any Tips ?
There definitely should be the protective film, on the white frames it blends in with the colour but it’s in there. As for the magnets it may be worth contacting them. I know on the newer style it’s way easier but I still find myself kinda wedging it inside and using the unit itself to help hold up the frame since the magnets at least on my older one are quite weak. It was easier to attach the back plate so if your able to reach around the unit to install them that could be way easier
@@HollyOnFilm Thanks for the response :D Yeah, I'll try to fix things as best I can. It's really the small piece of magnet that doesn't lock in the barrette and always falls off. Yes for the protective film it's strange. I love your display cases Holly! I looked at IKEA for a display for some of my bigger sets and I actually found one I liked. The problem was it was going to cost over twice as much as the actual case to have it delivered. I don't live anywhere near an IKEA to pick it up myself so I basically said f*ck that . But no worries I found a similar one on amazon that I am going to get soon.
Hi Holly, Wow! Ur big on LEGO. I came across your post on your GallBladderSurgery. I found your video informative. I have to go get my surgery soon too. Most other people I know don't wanna talk about their surgery so if you feel that way it's OK. Let me know. Tata. Karine
For the most part I’ve been pretty much back to normal after having it removed. Eating a meal from McDonald’s will leave me a little bloated, but nothing major. The only change I’ve made is having no more than half an avocado at once in a meal and will usually cap it at a quarter. I’m very happy I got it done and have felt so much better as a result, but that is also just my experience. Hope this helps 😊

I think Bricksie uses the Pax units from Ikea for the bigger sets that need more depth. Those have a back to them I think.
