Completely agree. I think if the case is wide enough, frames are okay, since most of the real estate is glass. But with the Detolf and Blaliden, it's not that wide, so frames take up a lot of the viewing space. And frameless detolfs just work better for its size. ☺

I'm starting to think IKEA has no ideia that detolf is so famous and sells a bunch in part mainly because of figures collectors. When they see that the sells on this are no way near the detolf ones i hope they backtrack but i doubt it.
IKEA certainly isn't very otaku aware. They discontinued the perfect manga bookcases, and has never made any new ones. Instead they just have dozens of inferior bookcases for putting random junk in them. Sure if you buy the regular kind, you can make double row manga, which is good for space, but not good for access. And I am mostly out of space these days, so it is not horrible with regular bookcases.

I actually went to Ikea yesterday to see about getting some detolfs and only found out then that they have been discontinued. While there I got a chance to inspect the Blalinden in person. Three things make the blalinden a definite no for me. 1) The metal edges that obscure views of your collection unless you're directly in front of the case. 2) The narrower design. As you say for starting collectors it's not necessarily an issue if they only put 1 or 2 figures on each shelf, but we all know from experience that despite wanting to start out that way, our collections soon grow to the point where 3 per shelf is much more likely. 3) The thinner glass. With the metal edge supports I think the sides will be less likely to break than the regular detolf that is over-tightened, but the thinner shelf glass is very troubling, maybe not as much for anime figure collectors as they are lightweight plastic, but for those of us who have die-cast figures or even statues it's a red flag.
Yeah, those 3 points are mainly why I don't think I'll be switching; but I'm glad collectors have more options. I personally like thicker glass, for sturdiness, and it makes the case seem higher quality. The Terravault case has 1/2 inch glass shelves, which are heavy as hell, but they look and feel so nice. And I can understand why IKEA would like to reduce glass thickness, since it will reduce the weight and cost of manufacturing the display cases (which in turn allows them to keep prices low). But I'm curious if we'll see in the future that people shatter the glass of BLALIDEN due to accidents which wouldn't normally happen with thicker glass.
The Ikea in my country have both of them, with the detolf still at its old pricing: 60usd, while the Blaliden is at 99usd, I think both have their pros and cons, but for the price difference, I think the detolf is still a no brainer

It's crazy to me that they would discontinue it. They have to be selling thousands of them to collectors all over the world. Hell I have one in my room right now. It almost makes no sense. And to replace it with a smaller, more cramped, and harder to view version. Business people are stupid.
That was a great video, I was really curious how the new Blaliden compared to the Detolf, definitely had a alot more cons than pros. I am glad you did this, now I know more about what to expect if I get one.

Absolutely agree, glass shelves are just tooooooo risky. A person spends so much on the figures that a few more bucks on something more reliable is a no brainer for me. The problem with glass shelves is that if one breaks..everything underneath and on it are going to get broken too. Too much risk for me.
@@vikinglore1066 yea I dont think the benefits of all glass shelving outweigh the risks at all. The only thing you get from glass is better viewing angles and people think they look clean (I think detolf displays look basic and played out myself) I think wooden shelving with glass doors is a great option
@@13_faces agreed! The glass shelves look nice and showcase the figures better for sure. I guess it depends what and how many etc you want to display. I personally am going with the wooden and then glass or plexiglass fronts I think that looks like the best option for me plus like you said these other options look played out. It’s also a time matter too, building takes time. I dunno, I can’t believe there’s so few original options availability considering the marketplace.
I have billys but thinking to get glass shelves to help me reduce the gap between rows. with wood I need big spacing to not block the view so I’d get more in.
just wanted to say thanks for this video, I have a rather large Junkerqueen figure from Blizzard and it's 26 pounds and 18 inches tall, this shelf thankfully has adjustable shelves so she'll have to be on the bottom lol
Detolf display area per shelf: 38x37 = 1406 cm2 (2 shelves = 2812 cm2) Blåliden display area per shelf: 32x28 = 892 cm2 (2 shelves = 1784 cm2) (Rudsta display area per shelf: 76x33 = 2508 cm2 (Milsbo display area per shelf: 66x36 = 2376 cm2 Blåliden is a downgrade, pure and simple, not even taking into account how the new frame blocks vision of whatever you're trying to have in there. If this isn't IKEA trying to save money on a worse (read: cheaper to manufacture) shelf, I don't know what it is...
I wanted some Detolf's but kept holding off for various reasons. I was saddened to see they were discontinued because they are perfect for modding. You could buy 2 D's and mod them into a 3 wide display, or 4 wide if you added a back board. I hope they re-release the D again with some minor adjustments but with the same glass panels.
I saw some photos of that, where people would merge detolfs together to make them 2 or 3 detolfs wide. Thought it was a really cool idea. Someone did say detolfs would make a come back with some adjustments, just hard to say when. My local Ikea still has detolfs, so I guess folks can still pick them up in some areas.
Ikea would just be shooting themselves in the foot if they were to just discontinue it. There's so many Ikea detolf alternatives that are exactly the same as the detolf that people will end up just buying just to have a consistent looking display collection. Also the black border all around the Blaliden is such a turn off, you basically are hindering the display view at certain angles.
What makes me real mad about all this is that this is supposed to "replace" the detolf, but has completely different measurements. I have 3 Detolfs right now, and I'm approaching max capacity. If I want to add another display case, I'd have to either find a second hand Detolf (which will probably get more and more hard to find as time goes on), or replace ALL my current displays with worse versions :/ I just don't understand why they discontinued such a beloved product...

While it sucks they are ending the Detolf, they've outpriced me on them. I loved them at $70, but I had a hard time justifying $100 even though I needed them. However, at $130, nope, I'm done. This new one does look nicer, but the design flaw you mentioned is a huge issue. Plus, with it being smaller, that would make it tougher for my Haslab Galactus and Sentinels to fit in when they are already snug in the detolf. In your comparison bit, I am confused how you say limited height options is a con when this seems to have more options compared to the detolf.
To clarify the limited height options, for the detolf, you can get aftermarket 3d printed clamps that attach to the metal frame where you can adjust the shelf height. Some people would use metal clamps from a hardware store but this approach scared me since I wouldn’t want to put glass on metal. It is true the Blaliden has twice the amount of height options. But you are forced to use the predrilled holes, and if you want a different height, there isn’t a lot of options other than maybe drilling your own holes into the frame, but I can see this being prone to error. Maybe using 3M tape and installing a wall hook or nub or something that can hold the shelf in each corner could work, as long as the tape stays. I am sure ideas for adjustable shelf’s outside the default options will start popping up.
That's multiple figures for that price compared to a single piece of glass that I can't really do anything with. It sits there and stuff. Not comparable.

Completely agree. I don't know if IKEA thinks their target audience uses display cases to show off plates, or pig/chicken ornaments in them. I wonder if they have statistics of how people are using them. The anime community can fit some figures in these, just not the big ones. I don't think the Hot Toy community can use these very well since a lot of their figures are around 12" and the Blaliden shelf height is 13". I think the Gunpla folks can fit some of their figures in here. I like having more options, but kind of sad when options go away (even if it may be temporary).
The Detolf is kinda shit, so I can only assume it's better. It looks like it's already an improvement just by the fact there aren't massive gaps for dust to get in through.
GREAT IKEA already raised the priced HUGE on the Detolf ...this one will most likely be double the price in CANADA ....as far as your lame comment about not attaching the UNIT to a wall ...some folks have small kids ,this is a safety issue and you should not be saying otherwise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think 3rd parties may sell their display cases through Amazon. But I also think, since there are soooo many detolfs on the market, you can pick up 2nd hand ones pretty easy.
Here in Germany a lot of people are giving away their used Detolfs (just because they are afraid to break them while moving apartments) for a couple of years now. I have 5 detolfs (all used, but looked like new except for one that had scratches on the top and bottom boards, but I foiled all of them anyway to get a concrete look), 3 cost me nothing, one cost me 15€ and one 20€. I will not switch and for the environment I suggest people to look for used, cheap/free Detolfs as well.
i was privy to the "experimental" version of what Ikea was supposedly releasing as the "detolf killer", and this aint it lol , the original concept was double thick glass LEFT and RIGHT panes while the front and rear where ultra thin , it had a metal bracket slide shelf system with adjustments slide notches every 4 inches , had wiring pass throughs top and bottom hidden in the wood top and bottoms and a built in bar light in the top wood positioned towards the door .... was supposedly going to retail for 249 dollars , not sure what happened if got scrapped or they still intend to release it , but it was far superior to the blalden in every way , it was also 15x15 cubes .... the blalden with smaller cubes and the black support beams obscuring the view , makes it look far worse than the original detolfs imo
Interesting, now you have me curious. I think I'm willing to spend $250 for a better detolf, if the changes justify it. But I do realize a lot of folks will push back on the high price for a single column display case. As for "detolf killer", it seemed fitting since the Blaliden came onto the market just at the moment the detolf is being pulled from the market. If there is an upgrade to the detolf coming, I wish they would have put it on the market the same time they took the detolf off it. I guess all we can do is wait.
I am so frustrated to just find out about this and not buying it when I first discovered this, now I am left with trash displays or overexpensive displays... mannnnnnnn why ikea whyyyyy *sigh*. All those amazon knockoffs do also not exist or are not delivering to germany :c
The good thing about the detolf is there are a lot of them out there. I'm sure they can be found on trading websites/apps like Offerup. Don't give up, I'm sure you'll be able to pick up detolfs for even cheaper. Detolfs in my local area are being sold for 1/3 the price (if I'm willing to drive 30 min to pick it up).
Fantastic video, well done!! I think Detolf's are better than this, but I think Ikea pays little attention to what their products are actually used FOR. Because in terms of figure displaying, this feels like a step backwards unfortunately.
Yeah, I'm horrible with pronunciations, sorry you had to suffer through hearing me kill the word over and over again. I think I was one of the first to put a video out on it, so I google searched out to pronounce it and nothing came back... so I unfortunately butchered it. But thank you sooo much for clarifying how to pronounce it, I will make sure I saying it better in the future.
They are a little under 14", thus I rounded down to 13". Overall, the shelf space is smaller than a detolf. And from what I've seen from Hot Toys figures, they are pretty tight on space even in the Detolf. I don't see them fitting very well in this case.
Yeah, I agree, if only they made them a bit larger, maybe the black frame wouldn't be so bad. But, I guess these will work out perfectly for certain people, so it's good we have more options.
I thought this furniture would be a good replacement but its capacity is too small for figures and it doesn't have many adjustment options That's why I would still prefer the detolf
I still think this display case is good for small figures, but collectors will need to have a mix of large cases with small cases to display figures of all shapes and sizes. While in the past, some folks would just by 6-8 Detolfs and line them up against a wall. I am glad we are getting more options.
Someone email those clueless execs over at IKEA. They're going to lose a lot of money should they discontinue the detolf. It should be improved upon not discontinued; factory dust proofing, shelf adjusters, lighting options, etc.
$99 is still seems kind of expensive for that. Maybe this is the way things are now these days. One of the lures to Detolf was that they were a cheap case. Then IKEA sold out of them and raised the price by at least double when they got them back. If Blaliden was around $50, it maybe better price for what you get.
Yeah, I can't justify $130 for a detolf. Even at a hundred I was at my breaking point but gave in because I really needed 3 additional cases. I want more, but now it's optional and I'll pass until they go back down in price.
They better not replace the Detolf with this as everyone who uses them for RC cars this new one will be useless for sure.... cheaper but smaller... talk about poor design. IF it was the same size it doesnt really matter if they replace the Detolf in future with this design but as it is I am sure there will be a lot of ppl stocking up on the older larger shelves.
Hard to say. I'm told that detolfs have been taken off the market for a period of time long in the past, and they come back with revisions made to them. But in the past, IKEA never really launched another display case at is similar to the detolf, while at the same time they took the detolf market; so not sure what will happen. But I like having options, and the Blaliden will be great for certain collectors. But I really hope the detolf comes back.
I saw someone on Reddit fuse a Rudsta on top of another Rudsta to make a tall display case. I am so tempted to try it myself. I think the Rudsta looks better than the Milsbo, just with it was twice the height.
True. I'm guess replacing the thin glass shelf with plexiglass shelves would be safer. But personally, Nendoroids have some pretty unique cases, if I had more, I would stick them in a case design around the size of Nendoroids.

Display case look nice, i used modified shelves and custom it to my liking instead with led lights. It’s not near perfect like your setup but works well enough for me. I’m hoping to add dust proof, acrylic panels for it all one day after saving money for it. 😊
I still can't believe I can no longer buy a Detolf... Exactly 2 more I needed and I told my self not to hurry as I was sure will find more. Big mistake as when I wanted to order they where already gone... 😢 I bought 2 Blaliden thinking how much smaller can be... Oh boy I was wrong as they are definitely way smaller. Yeah they are better sealed but I can no longer fit bigger dioramas like in a Detolf. Definitely a huge disappointment for me. Please Ikea ffs bring back the Detolf!
I wish I bought more than just 3 Detolfs back when I first got them several years ago. Had to drive 4 hours to my nearest Ikea though... $64 each was a good price. Now my collection has grown and I have no room for these figures. Why did the price have to go up so much? It's mostly just glass.

I agree, I feel we have a lot more display case options than we did 5 years ago, which is great. And given how many Detolfs are out on the market, it shouldn't be that hard to find one.
Fantastic vid. I had an idea to take this case and mount it horizontally on the wall using a shelf or across the top of an overhead desk. The door hinges would be facing up so the door would lift upwards and the figures wouldn't need shelves, they could be spread out much nicer. Do you think the black frames are strong enough to support the glass and hinges that way if it were laying sideways/flat?
I bought plenty of spinnrack DVD bookcases for manga in the past, and those were also all glass. I don't know why they don't make plexiglass products so that one does not have to worry about potential breaking glass. These days though those are discontinued so they probably figured out that glass was a bad material, but didn't figure out that the product was great. (Though it was a DVD product in a digital age, so only people who really wanted to put in small pocket books would buy them).
Ugh yes. We got lucky and found a Detolf in our apartments toss pile but when we moved 4 hours I didn't trust myself to pack it well enough for it to not break. Plexiglass could be a nice cheaper alternative with less breakability.
Detolf is notorious for spontaneous glass shattering, so it feels like all this framing is meant to prevent that, which I am all for. Otherwise, I expect the Detolf aftermarket to explode with used units on FB Marketplace et al, so win-win.
What is the sense behind discontinuing a tried and true classic, and replacing it with an inferior product?? FFS Ikea, you could be selling detolfs FOREVER because they are basically an ideal product for a good price. It makes no sense.
Here detolf is 88$ while blaliden is 112$, tho detolf is out of stock 😢. After your video i don't think I'll buy blaliden. I have ordered some figures that are pretty big and won't fit. Still love the detolf as Im collecting 1/6 figure and diecast figure. Full visibility and can handle more weight is what make detolf good. Blaliden just cant fit in 3 of them at once. While the detolf manage to do it. I think Im going custom next purchase. Kinda dumb move for Ikea to get rid detolf They should have Blaliden as another product not replace it.

It reminds me of the RUDSTA. I got two of those last year and was happy with my choice. The nice thing is the bottom shelf isn’t enclosed so it can be used for practical storage.
I'm blown away by the price you mention. Not sure if it's a territorial thing or the classic bait and switch move by Ikea rising the price absurdly before the change to make you belive the new product is cheaper, but I got my Detolf in spain in 2017 for €50.
Yeah, I got my detolfs for $60 in around 2001, then mid pandemic they bumped it to $100, then this year they bumped it to $130. Then news about discontinuing came around June time. I understand price of materials have gone up worldwide, but yeah, a pretty high bump in price in just a few years.
I have two detolfs and a milsbo. I built the milsbo by myself but it took both my dad and I to build the detolfs. I'm not a fan of the detolf mostly because I questioned their structural integrity. The blaliden on the other hand looks easier to build than the detolf but I would be concerned about the glass being thinner. I really like the milsbo, mainly because it's lifted off the ground.
I have a few detolfs. I think that given time, someone will figure out how to improve this newer case. The lack of the ability to add more shelves is a major turn off for me. I don’t have figures,but model cars and planes in mine.
The subject isn't really something I'm interested in (I'm guessing your video made it's way into my feed because of a connection between anime and anime figures, maybe? why not lay the door flat on the ground, install the magnets there and then put it on the hinges.... seems way easier. Bladiden is more expensive (79,99€) than Detolf (69,99€) and i think Detolf looks a lot cleaner because you dont have these huge ugly frames. But Bladiden looks sturdier which isnt a bad thing.
I have 3 detolfs for my figures but I'm going to use IKEA RUDSTA cabinets for the alcoves in my room. I will probably have to saw off the legs on them because I want to stack 2 Rudsta together to make a larger display cabinet.
That is the cabinet I would recommend. I have already done a stack mod to a Rudsta and I believe it turned out nice I posted a video of it. I bought 6 more so I'll have a wall of 4 stacked Rudsta cabinets side by side.
@@hathatfigures3663 it was your Rudsta videos that made me decide on trying something similar for my alcove walls. Your idea idea and guide on how to modify them where easy to follow. I measured the wall my 3 Detolfs are on and decided to move the middle one and buy a Milsbo cabinet for the middle.
On reddit people are saying that the Detolf is being discontinued temporarily and will return slightly different ( color options, materials, thinner glass) thoughts on this? Is it time to panic or nah...
I would love to see a revamp on the Detolf, it's a great display case, but it's a little bit dated, and they could make some simple adjustments to make it perfect. Thinner glass on the Detolf concerns me slightly, but I'm not a typical use case. The Blaliden has thin glass, and so to move it long distances (to make this video), I would pick it up with both hands from the bottom and carry it with my shoulder against one of the glass panels. I felt like my shoulder was going to go through the glass. Now, a normal person should have 2 people help carry it, and you only carrying it holding the frame, so I should have gotten help to carry it. I can't say thinner glass is bad, and it's definitely going to make things cost less and weigh less, but it will also make it a bit more fragile. Ultimately, most people put their display case down, and never move it, so, I doubt thinner glass will be an issue. As for time to panic, nah! I think we are in a really good place for display cases, there are a lot of options out there now than there was 5 years ago. So, having the Blaliden as another option is a great thing, because there are a lot of figures that would look great in it.
They already made a revision I think back in 2017 or so when they switched to thinner glass. I can't imagine they can go any thinner than they already have with the current model. I have both a early 2000's version and a 2023 version and the glass (plus H frames) are noticeably thinner.
@@foxglove9 I got my detolfs in 2021, and the Blaliden's glass is thinner. If I had to take a guess, maybe 33% thinner. But you now have made me curious about how thick the 2000's detolf glass is, hahaha.
Some folks mentioned laying the display down so you screw downward with the floor supporting door as you screw. Sadly, I didn't think of this when making the video.
I'd find transparent double-sided tape (a more narrow one, perhaps) and run a whole strip under the aluminium light strips. Just so those white double sided tape cushions wouldn't be so in your face.
Completely agree. Actually, on my own detolfs, I use a full strip of two sided white tape, and it blends into the aluminum channel color that you don't even notice the tape is there. I unfortunately used the two small tape strips provided in the lighting kit for this video. But I can see how they are an eye sore.
$99 for less glass? When detolf was that price? Nah. With the smaller size, I also can see it being hard to replace these shelves. I had 2 detolf shelves break on me. I ended up getting custom made shelves for it and though it's tight, they're thick and feel heavy duty. Everything fit fine too (figures with big bases).
@@weridplusho I liked the detolfs when I first got into collecting but I switched over to the Billy bookcases. The detolf got a bit too deep so figures can get lost in the back and they take up more room. Billys for me work better they don't extend too far from the walls and with the Morlidon doors (discontinued now of course) they're pretty clean.
@@matineyang Yeah, detolfs can stick out too much. I like being able to see all sides and if using more bigger figures, the depth isn't too much of a problem. I had a Billy too (for manga) and really liked it. I imagine with some leds, it could look super nice. Hiding the wires with the detolfs is a pain.

IKEA certainly isn't very otaku aware. They discontinued the perfect manga bookcases, and has never made any new ones. Instead they just have dozens of inferior bookcases for putting random junk in them.
Sure if you buy the regular kind, you can make double row manga, which is good for space, but not good for access. And I am mostly out of space these days, so it is not horrible with regular bookcases.

I actually went to Ikea yesterday to see about getting some detolfs and only found out then that they have been discontinued. While there I got a chance to inspect the Blalinden in person. Three things make the blalinden a definite no for me. 1) The metal edges that obscure views of your collection unless you're directly in front of the case. 2) The narrower design. As you say for starting collectors it's not necessarily an issue if they only put 1 or 2 figures on each shelf, but we all know from experience that despite wanting to start out that way, our collections soon grow to the point where 3 per shelf is much more likely. 3) The thinner glass. With the metal edge supports I think the sides will be less likely to break than the regular detolf that is over-tightened, but the thinner shelf glass is very troubling, maybe not as much for anime figure collectors as they are lightweight plastic, but for those of us who have die-cast figures or even statues it's a red flag.
Yeah, those 3 points are mainly why I don't think I'll be switching; but I'm glad collectors have more options. I personally like thicker glass, for sturdiness, and it makes the case seem higher quality. The Terravault case has 1/2 inch glass shelves, which are heavy as hell, but they look and feel so nice. And I can understand why IKEA would like to reduce glass thickness, since it will reduce the weight and cost of manufacturing the display cases (which in turn allows them to keep prices low). But I'm curious if we'll see in the future that people shatter the glass of BLALIDEN due to accidents which wouldn't normally happen with thicker glass.

The Ikea in my country have both of them, with the detolf still at its old pricing: 60usd, while the Blaliden is at 99usd, I think both have their pros and cons, but for the price difference, I think the detolf is still a no brainer
detolf near me is $150 they have raised the price over the years and I've never seen it at $60

It's crazy to me that they would discontinue it. They have to be selling thousands of them to collectors all over the world. Hell I have one in my room right now. It almost makes no sense. And to replace it with a smaller, more cramped, and harder to view version. Business people are stupid.

Absolutely agree, glass shelves are just tooooooo risky. A person spends so much on the figures that a few more bucks on something more reliable is a no brainer for me. The problem with glass shelves is that if one breaks..everything underneath and on it are going to get broken too. Too much risk for me.

The only thing you get from glass is better viewing angles and people think they look clean (I think detolf displays look basic and played out myself) I think wooden shelving with glass doors is a great option

I personally am going with the wooden and then glass or plexiglass fronts I think that looks like the best option for me plus like you said these other options look played out. It’s also a time matter too, building takes time. I dunno, I can’t believe there’s so few original options availability considering the marketplace.
I've had 4 for several years with heavy stuff on them without issue. Sudden big temperature changes is a big issue with glass.
I have billys but thinking to get glass shelves to help me reduce the gap between rows. with wood I need big spacing to not block the view so I’d get more in.

Blåliden is a downgrade, pure and simple, not even taking into account how the new frame blocks vision of whatever you're trying to have in there.

I wanted some Detolf's but kept holding off for various reasons. I was saddened to see they were discontinued because they are perfect for modding. You could buy 2 D's and mod them into a 3 wide display, or 4 wide if you added a back board. I hope they re-release the D again with some minor adjustments but with the same glass panels.
I saw some photos of that, where people would merge detolfs together to make them 2 or 3 detolfs wide. Thought it was a really cool idea.
Someone did say detolfs would make a come back with some adjustments, just hard to say when. My local Ikea still has detolfs, so I guess folks can still pick them up in some areas.
Ikea would just be shooting themselves in the foot if they were to just discontinue it. There's so many Ikea detolf alternatives that are exactly the same as the detolf that people will end up just buying just to have a consistent looking display collection. Also the black border all around the Blaliden is such a turn off, you basically are hindering the display view at certain angles.

I have 3 Detolfs right now, and I'm approaching max capacity. If I want to add another display case, I'd have to either find a second hand Detolf (which will probably get more and more hard to find as time goes on), or replace ALL my current displays with worse versions :/

While it sucks they are ending the Detolf, they've outpriced me on them. I loved them at $70, but I had a hard time justifying $100 even though I needed them. However, at $130, nope, I'm done.
This new one does look nicer, but the design flaw you mentioned is a huge issue. Plus, with it being smaller, that would make it tougher for my Haslab Galactus and Sentinels to fit in when they are already snug in the detolf.
In your comparison bit, I am confused how you say limited height options is a con when this seems to have more options compared to the detolf.
To clarify the limited height options, for the detolf, you can get aftermarket 3d printed clamps that attach to the metal frame where you can adjust the shelf height. Some people would use metal clamps from a hardware store but this approach scared me since I wouldn’t want to put glass on metal.
It is true the Blaliden has twice the amount of height options. But you are forced to use the predrilled holes, and if you want a different height, there isn’t a lot of options other than maybe drilling your own holes into the frame, but I can see this being prone to error.
Maybe using 3M tape and installing a wall hook or nub or something that can hold the shelf in each corner could work, as long as the tape stays. I am sure ideas for adjustable shelf’s outside the default options will start popping up.

That's multiple figures for that price compared to a single piece of glass that I can't really do anything with. It sits there and stuff. Not comparable.

Completely agree. I don't know if IKEA thinks their target audience uses display cases to show off plates, or pig/chicken ornaments in them. I wonder if they have statistics of how people are using them.
The anime community can fit some figures in these, just not the big ones. I don't think the Hot Toy community can use these very well since a lot of their figures are around 12" and the Blaliden shelf height is 13". I think the Gunpla folks can fit some of their figures in here.
I like having more options, but kind of sad when options go away (even if it may be temporary).

I think 3rd parties may sell their display cases through Amazon. But I also think, since there are soooo many detolfs on the market, you can pick up 2nd hand ones pretty easy.
Here in Germany a lot of people are giving away their used Detolfs (just because they are afraid to break them while moving apartments) for a couple of years now. I have 5 detolfs (all used, but looked like new except for one that had scratches on the top and bottom boards, but I foiled all of them anyway to get a concrete look), 3 cost me nothing, one cost me 15€ and one 20€. I will not switch and for the environment I suggest people to look for used, cheap/free Detolfs as well.

i was privy to the "experimental" version of what Ikea was supposedly releasing as the "detolf killer", and this aint it lol , the original concept was double thick glass LEFT and RIGHT panes while the front and rear where ultra thin , it had a metal bracket slide shelf system with adjustments slide notches every 4 inches , had wiring pass throughs top and bottom hidden in the wood top and bottoms and a built in bar light in the top wood positioned towards the door .... was supposedly going to retail for 249 dollars , not sure what happened if got scrapped or they still intend to release it , but it was far superior to the blalden in every way , it was also 15x15 cubes .... the blalden with smaller cubes and the black support beams obscuring the view , makes it look far worse than the original detolfs imo
Interesting, now you have me curious. I think I'm willing to spend $250 for a better detolf, if the changes justify it. But I do realize a lot of folks will push back on the high price for a single column display case.
As for "detolf killer", it seemed fitting since the Blaliden came onto the market just at the moment the detolf is being pulled from the market. If there is an upgrade to the detolf coming, I wish they would have put it on the market the same time they took the detolf off it. I guess all we can do is wait.

The good thing about the detolf is there are a lot of them out there. I'm sure they can be found on trading websites/apps like Offerup. Don't give up, I'm sure you'll be able to pick up detolfs for even cheaper. Detolfs in my local area are being sold for 1/3 the price (if I'm willing to drive 30 min to pick it up).

Fantastic video, well done!! I think Detolf's are better than this, but I think Ikea pays little attention to what their products are actually used FOR. Because in terms of figure displaying, this feels like a step backwards unfortunately.

Is it really 13 inches high for each shelf? I’m a Hot Toys collector so if it’s that small would be a pass for me
They are a little under 14", thus I rounded down to 13". Overall, the shelf space is smaller than a detolf. And from what I've seen from Hot Toys figures, they are pretty tight on space even in the Detolf. I don't see them fitting very well in this case.

I still think this display case is good for small figures, but collectors will need to have a mix of large cases with small cases to display figures of all shapes and sizes. While in the past, some folks would just by 6-8 Detolfs and line them up against a wall. I am glad we are getting more options.

They're going to lose a lot of money should they discontinue the detolf.
It should be improved upon not discontinued; factory dust proofing, shelf adjusters, lighting options, etc.
$99 is still seems kind of expensive for that. Maybe this is the way things are now these days. One of the lures to Detolf was that they were a cheap case. Then IKEA sold out of them and raised the price by at least double when they got them back. If Blaliden was around $50, it maybe better price for what you get.
On the other hand, other display cases this size are MUCH more expensive. This is still quite cheap.
Yeah, I can't justify $130 for a detolf. Even at a hundred I was at my breaking point but gave in because I really needed 3 additional cases. I want more, but now it's optional and I'll pass until they go back down in price.

They better not replace the Detolf with this as everyone who uses them for RC cars this new one will be useless for sure.... cheaper but smaller... talk about poor design. IF it was the same size it doesnt really matter if they replace the Detolf in future with this design but as it is I am sure there will be a lot of ppl stocking up on the older larger shelves.
Hard to say. I'm told that detolfs have been taken off the market for a period of time long in the past, and they come back with revisions made to them. But in the past, IKEA never really launched another display case at is similar to the detolf, while at the same time they took the detolf market; so not sure what will happen.
But I like having options, and the Blaliden will be great for certain collectors. But I really hope the detolf comes back.

I saw someone on Reddit fuse a Rudsta on top of another Rudsta to make a tall display case. I am so tempted to try it myself. I think the Rudsta looks better than the Milsbo, just with it was twice the height.

I would not use this for nendoroids. They still weigh quite a bit when you have a lot. So it’s a no for me
True. I'm guess replacing the thin glass shelf with plexiglass shelves would be safer. But personally, Nendoroids have some pretty unique cases, if I had more, I would stick them in a case design around the size of Nendoroids.

Display case look nice, i used modified shelves and custom it to my liking instead with led lights. It’s not near perfect like your setup but works well enough for me. I’m hoping to add dust proof, acrylic panels for it all one day after saving money for it. 😊

I wish I bought more than just 3 Detolfs back when I first got them several years ago. Had to drive 4 hours to my nearest Ikea though... $64 each was a good price. Now my collection has grown and I have no room for these figures. Why did the price have to go up so much? It's mostly just glass.

Fantastic vid. I had an idea to take this case and mount it horizontally on the wall using a shelf or across the top of an overhead desk.
The door hinges would be facing up so the door would lift upwards and the figures wouldn't need shelves, they could be spread out much nicer.
Do you think the black frames are strong enough to support the glass and hinges that way if it were laying sideways/flat?

I bought plenty of spinnrack DVD bookcases for manga in the past, and those were also all glass. I don't know why they don't make plexiglass products so that one does not have to worry about potential breaking glass. These days though those are discontinued so they probably figured out that glass was a bad material, but didn't figure out that the product was great. (Though it was a DVD product in a digital age, so only people who really wanted to put in small pocket books would buy them).
Ugh yes. We got lucky and found a Detolf in our apartments toss pile but when we moved 4 hours I didn't trust myself to pack it well enough for it to not break. Plexiglass could be a nice cheaper alternative with less breakability.
Detolf is notorious for spontaneous glass shattering, so it feels like all this framing is meant to prevent that, which I am all for. Otherwise, I expect the Detolf aftermarket to explode with used units on FB Marketplace et al, so win-win.

It reminds me of the RUDSTA. I got two of those last year and was happy with my choice. The nice thing is the bottom shelf isn’t enclosed so it can be used for practical storage.
I'm blown away by the price you mention. Not sure if it's a territorial thing or the classic bait and switch move by Ikea rising the price absurdly before the change to make you belive the new product is cheaper, but I got my Detolf in spain in 2017 for €50.
Yeah, I got my detolfs for $60 in around 2001, then mid pandemic they bumped it to $100, then this year they bumped it to $130. Then news about discontinuing came around June time. I understand price of materials have gone up worldwide, but yeah, a pretty high bump in price in just a few years.

I have two detolfs and a milsbo. I built the milsbo by myself but it took both my dad and I to build the detolfs. I'm not a fan of the detolf mostly because I questioned their structural integrity. The blaliden on the other hand looks easier to build than the detolf but I would be concerned about the glass being thinner. I really like the milsbo, mainly because it's lifted off the ground.

why not lay the door flat on the ground, install the magnets there and then put it on the hinges.... seems way easier.
Bladiden is more expensive (79,99€) than Detolf (69,99€) and i think Detolf looks a lot cleaner because you dont have these huge ugly frames. But Bladiden looks sturdier which isnt a bad thing.

I have 3 detolfs for my figures but I'm going to use IKEA RUDSTA cabinets for the alcoves in my room. I will probably have to saw off the legs on them because I want to stack 2 Rudsta together to make a larger display cabinet.
That is the cabinet I would recommend. I have already done a stack mod to a Rudsta and I believe it turned out nice I posted a video of it. I bought 6 more so I'll have a wall of 4 stacked Rudsta cabinets side by side.
@@hathatfigures3663 it was your Rudsta videos that made me decide on trying something similar for my alcove walls. Your idea idea and guide on how to modify them where easy to follow. I measured the wall my 3 Detolfs are on and decided to move the middle one and buy a Milsbo cabinet for the middle.

I would love to see a revamp on the Detolf, it's a great display case, but it's a little bit dated, and they could make some simple adjustments to make it perfect.
Thinner glass on the Detolf concerns me slightly, but I'm not a typical use case. The Blaliden has thin glass, and so to move it long distances (to make this video), I would pick it up with both hands from the bottom and carry it with my shoulder against one of the glass panels. I felt like my shoulder was going to go through the glass. Now, a normal person should have 2 people help carry it, and you only carrying it holding the frame, so I should have gotten help to carry it. I can't say thinner glass is bad, and it's definitely going to make things cost less and weigh less, but it will also make it a bit more fragile. Ultimately, most people put their display case down, and never move it, so, I doubt thinner glass will be an issue.
As for time to panic, nah! I think we are in a really good place for display cases, there are a lot of options out there now than there was 5 years ago. So, having the Blaliden as another option is a great thing, because there are a lot of figures that would look great in it.
They already made a revision I think back in 2017 or so when they switched to thinner glass. I can't imagine they can go any thinner than they already have with the current model. I have both a early 2000's version and a 2023 version and the glass (plus H frames) are noticeably thinner.
@@foxglove9 I got my detolfs in 2021, and the Blaliden's glass is thinner. If I had to take a guess, maybe 33% thinner. But you now have made me curious about how thick the 2000's detolf glass is, hahaha.

My local ikea still sells them, but at a whopping price of $130 usd which is more than double what I paid for a couple years ago ($60)

Some folks mentioned laying the display down so you screw downward with the floor supporting door as you screw. Sadly, I didn't think of this when making the video.
I'd find transparent double-sided tape (a more narrow one, perhaps) and run a whole strip under the aluminium light strips. Just so those white double sided tape cushions wouldn't be so in your face.
Completely agree. Actually, on my own detolfs, I use a full strip of two sided white tape, and it blends into the aluminum channel color that you don't even notice the tape is there. I unfortunately used the two small tape strips provided in the lighting kit for this video. But I can see how they are an eye sore.
$99 for less glass? When detolf was that price? Nah.
With the smaller size, I also can see it being hard to replace these shelves. I had 2 detolf shelves break on me. I ended up getting custom made shelves for it and though it's tight, they're thick and feel heavy duty. Everything fit fine too (figures with big bases).
Weren’t detolfs around $70 before the shut down?

@@weridplusho I liked the detolfs when I first got into collecting but I switched over to the Billy bookcases. The detolf got a bit too deep so figures can get lost in the back and they take up more room. Billys for me work better they don't extend too far from the walls and with the Morlidon doors (discontinued now of course) they're pretty clean.
@@matineyang Yeah, detolfs can stick out too much. I like being able to see all sides and if using more bigger figures, the depth isn't too much of a problem. I had a Billy too (for manga) and really liked it. I imagine with some leds, it could look super nice. Hiding the wires with the detolfs is a pain.
