    Just an fyi from someone who is just now doing this project, Edsal Muscle Racks come in two types of black: matte and glossy. The matte appears to be what Costa has, but if you get the glossy MAKE SURE TO TAKE OFF AN EXTRA HALF AN INCH FROM THE LENGTH AND WIDTH OF THE HARDBOARD!!! I didn't find that out until I was about ready to put this whole thing together. The shelves for the glossy black muscle rack are slightly smaller, measuring in at about 23.5" x 47.5". The board on the back only needs to be cut to 47.5" but the height of it can be whatever your shelf height is.

    It's nice seeing another collector using garage/industrial shelving for their displays. I've been using them for years with great enjoyment. A couple things I'd add:
    1. I find the shelves look even better when painted compared to the factory finish. Unfortunately this does require a little touch-up work after assembly.
    2. Painting the shelves can accomplish the same goal as the upholstery work, and maybe even better for those in humid states like Florida or Louisiana. Most of the shelves these days are either MDF or particle board which love to absorb moisture. A couple coats with oil based paint will seal them up nicely.
    Your idea for the backing is excellent.

    I learned a lot from this. I've got two of these shelves for my work room and I've been trying to figure out how to display my X-Wings and Grogu doll. Now I've got a bunch of new ideas. Thank you for sharing.
    FYI, the orginal shelf boards are not meant for heavy items. They bend and warp. You might have to invest in plywood. Lowes and Home Depot can cut it for you. Call ahead. Some stores can't keep their saw in working order. Talk to a lumber floor associate, the cashier (this was me once) might not know anything about the saw. These shelf units are sold at almost all the hardware stores. Mine are from Lowe's. HD, Walmart, and Amazon carry them. Get a big flat cart or lumber cart when you come in, they wont fit in shopping cart. They are usually in the storage/home organization department of the store. Also they weight over 100 pounds, bring help or wrestle them by yourself. I wrestled both of mine by myself but they are heavy. You might need something to protect your floor cause the legs are metal. You have the option of making one large unit with the five shelves or two half units with two/three shelves. Check around Black Friday to see if they go on sale (mine were). Happy collecting, friends.

    Thanks for the video! I’m almost done with mine!
    Here are couple of things to consider for people:
    1: I chose 36x72x18 shelve, and for that you can only fit 1 light/ tier.
    You’ll need to order 2 of the 9” extensions 2: for lights, since you’re not connecting 2 lights, and as a result, the distance between each light will be more compared to Costa’s shelve.
    3: If you’re collecting 1/4 or 1/3 statues like me, I’d recommend reinforcing the shelves by doubling wood panels and then cover it with faux leather.

      I also am using the 36x72x18 shelving and my issue with the lighting is that when I put the connectors on either end, the light no longer fits because of the plugs sticking out either side. It fits fine with one connector in one side, but not with both. How did you remedy this?

    • @Pure_flamenco
      @Pure_flamenco Год назад +1

      @@SomeoneHasThatName As I mentioned you’ll need two of the 9” extensions, and even with 2, sometimes you’ll need to adjust the lights by pushing them either left or right. However, if you want to fit the lights exactly in the center of each level, you can either get the third 9” extension or get longer extensions.
      I used 2 of 9” and 2 of the 3 light aren’t exactly in the center of each level and that doesn’t effect the lighting of levels at all. So the choice is yours! Hopefully this was helpful

      @PopCultureLivingRoom  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much! You could definitely do acrylic shelves for every shelf but it will be very expensive. As for the wires, if you can slide them through without cutting the shelf then definitely try. The way my shelves are I wasn't able to pass through the wires without cutting the shelves in the corner.

    This is great! I live in an area that I don’t have access to an IKEA or anything like it. I had to go with cheap Target shelves. The spacing is not ideal and leaves a lot of unusable area to 1/6th figures. I really don’t have a dust issue so I could forgo the outer acrylic. The only thing that is minimally unsightly on this case is the holes and I bet you could clean that up with some kind of thick black vinyl trim cut to size. I’m not sure what product you could use for that but I’m sure it exist. The black vinyl tape might work but I’m thinking it’s too thin and you would still see the outline of the holes.

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  2 года назад

      Thank you so much for watching! I think I have an idea for you for the holes. You definitely don't want to use vinyl tape. The adhesive does not stick on well to metal. They make thinner magnetic tape. Get a size wide enough to cover the holes, about 1", and apply it. You will have the magnetic strength and adhesive strength to hold it.
      I found this online and it should work. I may buy some to test it because you brought up something that I didn't think of, people who won't be using outer acrylic. Thank you!

    Great idea and video !! I’ve been looking for a nice display case to replace Detolfs because they’re so fragile and you can’t make a nice multiple figure diorama. I’m going to be making one of these VERY soon. Instead of super glue, if people have a hot glue gun, the glue sticks would probably be cheaper than super glue. Although I don’t think a hot glue gun will work for the expanded PVC back panels in your upgrade video, I’m pretty sure the hot glue would melt the PVC. I definitely going to be recommending this to my friends and followers. Thanks again !!!

      @mrxenosith8023 Год назад +1

      As Costa mentioned with the Jigsaw, do use one with many teeths versus the standard blade that comes with it. do note as you cut the notch, that as the plexi cools it will want to stick to itself. my solution in the past with notches is not to stop when you start, I used to do a circular notch. if you want the square notch, after cutting, you can finish it by hand by using the blade manually (wearing gloves of course). I hope this helps out others since you already by now completed your build.

      Hi! Thanks so much for watching! My setup for the garage shelf is approximately the same as 3 DF120s. The top 2 sections of my garage shelf are a little bigger than the DF120. A moducase setup like this would cost approximately $1000. Could be less. That cost depends on shipping cost and if you pay a customs fee where you live. Also they give 5% discount if you pay for your moducase all up front. Hope this helps! If you decide to build the display case, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions. Awesome display! Thank you for the incredibly simple and easy to follow tutorial, Costa!
    How much weight can the acrylic take if you use it as a bottom inner shelf? I would love to see you incorporate led panel lighting as a base in one of those shelves! Something similar to the expensive Legendary Displays' SHO-OFF cases, both with diffused top and bottom lights, but at more than half of the cost. I've been researching edge lit lighting on frosted acrylic panels, and I feel like I can make it work. Just worried about the weight of some larger scale statues/dioramas bearing on the acrylic. One could say it's an unnecessary expense, but that's one of the small sacrifices you could make to make the best display for your collection! And it's certainly still gonna be cheaper than any Moducase with dim af lighting lol.
    But I still wouldn't have been able to build my own dream shelf without your videos. Thanks again!

      Thank you so much G! I'm super happy I could help you out. The acrylic shelf can easily hold heavy statues. But it can't be thinner than 1/2 inch. I know of the legendary displays. I was looking into making a display cabinet but I ultimately went with Moducase Sixth Series. I collect anime figures so it’s a perfect size for my mostly 1/7 scale figures and I got two tall units for my 1/4 scale. Acrylic sheets even from a local supplier are extremely expensive near me and I would be too limited on how I can space my shelves. Ultimately I’d rather pay a little more for the build quality and modular design. The eight month wait time does suck but because of it I don’t have to pay in full upfront.

It did come with the couplings but only to be installed as inner couplings, not outer as per your build. I did find the outer couplings online. Once they arrive, I will compare both units, the one with inner and then the new one that arrives I will test it as an outer coupling. I will update on the findings of it after I am done. I had this shelf in my garage for tools and equipment. Shelf collapsed with less than 100lbs on it. The problem is the pressboard wood shelf. It’ll never hold the weight of statues or any other heavy items no matter what the manufacturer claims. You’ll want to use plywood for shelves. You may even want to consider adding extra bracing to keep the outward structure from bowing and deformation. Deformation that would allow the shelves to collapse.

      I haven't tried that much weight on the acrylic shelf but at 1/2 inch thick it feels like it can hold a lot of weight especially if you distribute the weight across the shelf. In fact ithe acrylic shelf feels sturdier than the boards that come with the garage shelf and they can hold 200lbs each. Yes I did cut notches out of the corners of the acrylic shelf. I think there's a quick spot in the video on it. I used a jigsaw to cut it.

      Awesome! It's going to be a fun journey. When I talked about shelves, I was talking about the ones I covered with the fabric. I covered 4 shelves which includes the top one. The layout I chose gives a lot of option without ever having to move or add more shelves. I made each section big enough so that all the figures can be seen and risers or floating shelves can be added. If you had an 18" deep garage shelf, you could put more shelves in. But with 24" deep shelves, the figures in the back wouldn't get seen if there were more shelves since the shelves would be closer together. It also gives me options if I want to add vehicles.

      Thanks Vipin! If you're talking about the acrylic shelf, I got it on Amazon. It can hold a lot of weight and it's very sturdy. I think the one I have can easily hold large statues. What do you plan on putting in your display?

    I have seen this video over and over and I still enjoy it.
    I did wonder after watching episode 3 with the use of expanded pvc board.
    i wonder why not use that to place on top of the board instead of using the faux leather.
    of course, the expanded pvc would lay on top of the factory board.
    did that idea ever run through your head?

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  Год назад

      Thanks so much for your support! I have not thought about that but that could definitely work. I chose the faux leather because I was trying to get it as close to a Moducase as I could. If you decide to use the PVC foam sheet on the shelf, let me know how it turns out.

    Has anyone else had issues with the cords for the lights making it difficult for the lights to fit in place? I bought the same size shelf and lights so I’m not sure why mine doesn’t fit in place as well/how to make it fit better

    Thanks for the video, how does this fare with heavier things like resin statues? any tips on reinforcing the board/beam to make sure it dos not fall over? also acrylics sheets are expensive on my location, the cheapest I could find was a 1/16 inch thick.. would that suffice?

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  8 дней назад +1

      The shelves can handle statues very well. If you check out the tribute video on the channel, you will see a lot of statue collectors. If you want to reinforce the shelves, you can buy metal slats from Home Depot and put one in the middle of the shelf. Or, which I think works better, is you could switch out the particle board and use a piece of 24x48 pine board from Home Depot or Lowe's. It can be a 1/2" thick or you can do a full inch. I have a live build where I switch out a shelf from the garage shelf for a solid wood board. I will link them below. The 1/16" thick acrylic works fine. When it's own you can't tell the thickness. When you take it off the front, it will be a bit flimsy feeling which is fine. It will do what you need it to do.
      If you have any other questions, I'm here to help.

    Do you also cut a 1/2 inch off the corners on the acrylic shelf on the one bottom shelf

  • @h8n453
    @h8n453 Год назад +1

    Hey love the video, my question is I got a rack from Costco and the board is too thick to cut the squares on each corners, it is necessary to do a zig zag pattern for the lights could I not just have all the wires run by the left corner where the plug, having the wires go down instead of zig zagging at each shelf level? Thanks!

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  Год назад

      Thank you so much for watching! You don't have to do the zig zag pattern. I did the zig zag pattern so I wouldn't have to get longer extension cords. The lights are connected in a line so one of the lights will need an extension cord long enough to reach back from to the end where you want it to go. I hope that makes sense.

    this looks great but sadly it still cost more than a Detolf , might eventually switch to this kinda setup though. acrylic sheets in my city still cost about $77 cad for a 70x40"

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! Yeah, detolfs will always be cheaper. Acrylic has gone up so much in price because of the pandemic but hopefully costs will come down over the next year. I must have bought a different brand of rack same size but I’m unable to do the 24/24/20 because the side rails are divided by 35 inches each and makes it so those measurements are impossible. So I’ve got 20/13(roughly)/24/10. I’m hoping it’ll still work looks like it will.

    Probably a silly question but how does the materials needed (not acrylic) scale if doing 72x36x18? Also do you feel the need to anchor these to the wall? Great video and can't wait to get started!

    • @PopCultureLivingRoom
      @PopCultureLivingRoom  10 месяцев назад

      Hi! Sorry for the late response. I've been out of town. It's easy to scale them down to the smaller cases. I've had several people make the smaller size cases. The garage shelves are pretty stable but if you have small kids, you may want to anchor it. Thank you so much for watching! If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me.
