You are EXACTLY right on the nostalgia and personal connection these cards need to have with young players and collectors for this hobby to truly grow. While Pokemon is bigger than Yugioh ever was I still think those core fundamental memories as you put it will play an enormous role in this hobby's future. If Surging Sparks, Prismatic, and soon to be Journey Together aren't on store shelves kids aren't going to care about them at all.
@@cryptoclyps5049 He brings it up in this video. Yugioh has a mostly older player and collector base because the younger generations lost interest more and more year after year. This could be the case with Pokemon if there is no product available for them to grab off a store shelf because lets be honest a kid isn't going on a website to grab Pokemon cards. They are going with their parents to Target or Walmart shopping and ask for that pack available on the shelves. If there is nothing available then the interest year after year for the youth could slowly die down and eventually lead to a more stagnant hobby. In terms of investments that isn't great long term if your buyers simply have no interest in a product that historically has its teeth sunk deeply into nostalgia. Can't have nostalgia for something you never really had.
I really can’t imagine a market crash right now at this crazy time. I feel like the market has totally changed. People are just buying whatever. Prices are going up on anything just “nice”. The market now is like if India suddenly started collecting Pokemon cards but the Pokemon company decides to copy the Prime hydration and Travis Scott Nike collab sneakers business model.
I actually collected comics/ marvel, GPk since the early 90s till about 2022 then switch over to pokemon. Channel has taught me quite a bit! thanks and keep the vids coming!
Absolute spot on take. A lot of people picking it up right now in this bull run collected these cards as a kid. They have disposable income and are keen to get back in for nostalgia purposes. With any thing that gets popular, it brings in a lot of attention and hype that will eventually crash. However with Team Rocket and the 30th around the corner…this may last longer than we think
Solid take. I didn't think about it that way, but makes sense! Even though I didn't collect cards, I played so much of the games as a kid (still do😅) and just from that nostalgia, I jumped on board the card scene during celebrations. Maybe there will be kids like me that'll start collecting as an adult, just because they enjoyed the show or the game or some other aspect of pokemon? (pokemon go, unite, tcg pocket, etc.)
All good points! Stepping back to get a clearer picture can be hard, especially when something new is happening every 2-3 months (for the most part). But if you’re able to buy/open/keep what you’re interested in on a strategic level, you can still get the satisfaction of being involved with what’s going on in the community, while not burning a hole through your pocket or being left holding the bag. But hey, some people like holding the bag, if it’s something they truly love. 🤷❤
Just getting in to the hobby so I'm glad I found your channel. I like the art work on the cards I'm not really interested in selling them but I also am not interested in paying thousands for a single card
Love these vids. Just started collecting in November and needed to reconsider collecting as a hobby. Expensive cards are cool but picking up cool looking cards for 5 bucks is the best part most of the time.
Still plenty of cool 5$ cards. This hobby is a lifetime hobby. You dont need everything now plus its nice to have more expensive cards to set goals on in the future.
The sneaker community no longer fights for pairs in Australia. Jordan’s are sitting on shelves that we used to line up all night for. It was fun while it lasted haha hopefully Pokémon outlasts the downturn we will most likely be in for a while. Great vid! Just subbed.
Yea this video kinda sums it up. I have been collecting for some time, always on a budget. My passion for collecting seems to wane every time the prices get so high. Right now, I'm just trying to find things that are collectable within my price range. Anyway, something has to be done.
I managed to get my hands on the binder pack of prismatic evolutions and opened my first 5 packs🤣 hopefully the next reprint will make things a bit easier for everyone. Great videos to by the way, heaps of great info, cheers mate 🤙🏻
I totally agree with you. I do sense that some people are a bit short sighted when it comes to the ramifications a continuation of this market would have. The reason why so many adults are in the hobby right now is because we were able to easily access them as a kid. We had that joy and experienced the hobby in a way that made us want to invest in the future. The future for us is here, so we are using the money we didn’t have as a kid to buy stuff now. That said, the fastest way to kill this hobby is make it so kids now don’t experience that same joy. The hobby would suffer a heat death if the market doesn’t correct itself. The value of cards doesn’t matter if the collectors of the future are the same people as now. The product can’t be moved as easily and the long term interest isn’t there. The hobby needs kids and families to invest in it and be able to access the product. If it devolves to where it is just a bunch of grown ass adults buying product from one another, then the long term death of this hobby is inevitable. As a community, more effort has to be done to prevent that and I’m not sure everybody is on the same page. We should act in a way where people to want these cards in the future and not just assume that they will.
Honestly old cards have so much charm, I love looking at "normal" illustrations in their little windows. Some commons have stunning art, and I wish that same art was extended across the whole card. The rainbows and the solid background full arts are not my jam, but alt arts are gorgeous:) they also tend to be easier to pull😂
Majority of the people here have collected Pokémon cards or some kind of trading card game when they were younger. Majority also have watched the anime. I agree with everything you’re saying and it’s sad not a lot of people talk about the future of Pokemon and how to keep it around. Pokemon has done a really good with this but with bull runs like this, it makes it very difficult for the kids to get product, and therefore it can affect the future of Pokemon.
Love your content, me and my buddies tried getting into getting stock up to get a table at a convention up but everything is so expensive rn and we can’t really get into it because it cost so much, scalpers kinda killed the dream:(
Really hope that at least some of the sets drop in value. It feels like even the underrated and under appreciated sets are still being bought out by the hype beasts and other scalpers that simply want to make some quick cash.
It may be a question without a truly definitive answer really, but I keep wondering what is the trigger point of a 'bull run'? What specifically happens for it to be unanimously agreed that the market is in such a situation?
I've been playing MTG for a few years, and what shocks me now that I'm starting to get back into collecting Pokemon is that some of the chase cards seem prohibitively expensive (especially considering the target audience). I can buy expensive magic decks for the same price as a single Pokemon chase card, excepting vintage cards ofc. I've come to terms that the only way I'll ever have some of these cards is if I get lucky enough to pull them, but until then I'm happy with collecting cards I think are cute and affordable
I went a bit too hard these past few months (started collecting in August 2024), and now my collection is worth around $2,500. I never saw it as an investment, but I can’t lie-I’m a bit worried about the market crashing and my collection losing value. Hopefully, I’ll be a dad later this year, so I’m thinking about selling everything and restarting my collection, but taking it slower this time.
As much as I like seeing my Collectr portfolio rise in value it's starting to become a bit difficult to enjoy the hobby, especially when I know that cards aren't even accessible for kids these days like they used to be. It's become all about the value of a card and not pure excitement for a set. I'm trying to chase the pokemon I enjoy rather than try to go for the all-time biggest cards (though they would be nice to have) and I realized that I've found more joy in doing so! Thanks for the videos as always Phil!
My favourite thing to do is rip packs with my son. He will have some great lasting memories. I can’t afford to buy endless packs so it is a special treat or on special occasions. With modern pull rates, we are yet to pull a decent chase card. I am sad for him as I would love him to have those same strong emotionally charged memories that I had as a kid when ripping a chase card. This nostalgia may be missing for the younger generation.
I think cards can’t really be iconic because there’s too many cards and pulling cards is just hard. Back then if you got a booster box, you’re pulling most of the holos that are in the set like with Neo genesis, half the box are holos, all holos in Japanese. But now there’s Holos, EXs, Full art, IR and SIRs. No one will have a connection to any card because you’ll never see it.
The market is definitely in need of a correction. I started as a 90s kid collecting, but I just got back into the hobby, honestly by accident. From everything I have found it is the worst time for it, but that scarlet and violet sir charizard had me hooked
I love your videos and after watching your 3 day back video and I have started to collect from today and in India is so tough to find original cards in right website and can suggest some pack for beginners to buy and I am from Chennai a city in South India
That “ but some of the other cards could use a little whoootshhh” had me rolling!!! 😂 😂😂😂 I was already subscribed but I had to unsubscribe just to re-subscribe again. 🤣that was too much!!
I would love to get the umbreon card for my collection, also your videos are very informative thank you for looking out for us regular collectors, also I haven't been able to find any packs any where around me lol
You should also link your video on the relationship between the Pokemon company and the secondary market. I think it was "the dark side of pokemon". Not only do we want more shiny cardboard to increase availability and bring down prices, but the Pokemon company probably also wants prices to come down and they're going to try their hardest to stabilize supply and demand. They've set prices and printing at levels they think straddles the line between allowing fans to buy the product and supporting a secondary market where prices can gradually increase long term. I bet they're just as concerned over the current situation as we fans are.
Bro this exactly, I was gonna pick up the celebrations umbreon a few weeks ago when it was 15 and now it’s near 55! I’ll be waiting for the market crash haha
I’m 14 and started collecting a few months and there isn’t even a point trying to collect surging or prismatic anymore because of these prices. I’ll stick to my stellar crown 😂
Count me in as an adult who just got into Pokemon. I came over from sports and frankly even with the recent boom collecting Pokemon is sooo much cheaper than high end sports cards and opening packs is surprisingly more gratifying. Sports has become pure speculation on the top rookie or two each season which rarely pans out until they win MVPS and rings. Take a long time to reward you and really does. Whereas Pokemon have immediate value and will hold it more or less based on the character, art, rarity etc. Annnd Pokemon don’t get injured or do stupid off court stuff and ruin their careers. Pokemon feels like a safer long term investment and short term fun! Can’t believe I’m admitting that as a looong time sports card collector.
Oh the other thing is in sports it’s mostly about rookie and the prime of a guys career then once they retire their cards are pretty much worthless besides a few autos here and there. But in pokemon a strong character can be relevant and sought after generation after generation.
I was introduced to PTCG about 4 months ago through RUclips shorts showing Paldean Fates pack openings, especially the Gardevoir sir. I was immediately drawn to the art and thought, “What a lovely piece of ‘cardboard’!” I wanted to add it to my PC, but at that time, the price was RM170 (40 USD). Now, looking back... I regret not getting it.
I have no problem with Pokemon cards being expensive. After a certain amount of time. Not literally at release. It drives the hobby to be money focused rather than collecting, enjoying the artwork or chase.
Current high prices for new sets arent sustainable. Whats keeping people from just sitting a set out? Are the scalpers going to keep stockpiling? Its gonna stop at one point one way or another.
One of the biggest issues with keeping kids in the game is actually the RRP. In Japan Pokemon is still huge with kids but pack price is under $2 (about the same as a 600ml bottle of Coke) yet here in Aus pack price is $7-$8 (over 2x the price of a bottle of Coke) Parents just don’t wanna spend that much on a pack of cards for their kid to play with, footy cards are $4, parents would much rather be spending that amount on a pack of cards
All cards are up but there are still buying opportunities. Sets that are going out of print definitely still have major upside. Pokemon has a great business model. They don't overprint at the start of a set to keep desirability
I’m new to the hobby, but I wonder if some of the illustration rares/alt arts for popular Pokémon will be very sought after in the long term due to the uniqueness of each design. Chase cards are not just rainbow, gold, holo, or full art, but are artistic scenes.
I hope PSA 10 prices hold, but I honestly suspect that a lot of the SV cards that just jumped to 300$ this year will eventually settle for around 200$- this might be several years away during a deep dip. Then, give it a couple additional years and they will go back to 300$, with a few outliers jumping ahead.
I remember the thrill and hype of opening a new set as a kid since I was only able to buy 1 or 2 packs every now and then. Nowadays kids aren't even able to get 1 pack as parents aren't likely to pay scalper prices especially ones that aren't keen on "wasting" money. Even now I'm still not able to buy many packs because the sets I do wanna buy are always out of stock for retail prices. Its sad to see that the hobby has shifted from focussing on the beautiful artworks to simply being a cheap and easy means to a quick buck.
I feel like the market won’t crash until way after the team rocket set drops. Or there will be a mini crash and it’ll pick right back up again when hype builds for that set.
Agreed. Everyone is looking at this through a micro lens. If you hinder the next generation from accessing the product the market won’t grow in the future or forgotten about. I have feeling Pokemon won’t be that bad but right now it’s leaving a bit of a sour taste in kids and families mouths. Thanks for bringing awareness and sound reasoning to the community 😊 you actually helped my family and I try to pick and spend wisely when entering this hobby. Made sure my kids pick wisely with what sets they want to collect, because realistically our wallets can’t handle every single new thing that comes out. 😅
in my honest opinion a combination of 2 things will help crash the market: 1 - Pokémon international prints the dogshit out of a whole bunch of sets making everything widely available. 2 - Buyers stop buying at ridiculous prices causing the hypebeast/sneakerhead crowd to sit on their product and take L's forcing to drop prices.
I'm in for the love for pokemon, my veeery few sealed are for collection. But yeah of course the crisis with investors affects us passionate collector's 😬 That's the main reason we all follow you, for your indications and updates on the market, cheers bro!
It's Umbreon, its incredibly hard to pull, it comes from a set that is almost impossible to find, the artwork is solid too, so of course its going to command a high price. If booster packs were 5USD then sure, it should be a lot cheaper than it is, but they're not, they're around 15USD which keeps the price of this card artificially high. I don't see the market crashing but i'm sure it'll level out to an extent. My advice, just buy the cards you love, if you go looking for expensive chase cards that's exactly what you'll find. You don't have to chase what everyone else is, chase what you love that represents you. Also, if you love the artwork then consider Japanese cards, better textures, more vibrant, and......cheaper! There's something for everyone in this hobby, dont be led by others telling you what you should or shouldn't chase. Just think, if social media didn't exist which cards would you actually want to collect?.
I'm going to start my collection with the 151 set which is arriving this Saturday. This set brings back the best memories for me and makes collecting fun. If I pull something amazing, great. If I don't, like you said it's shiny cardboard in the end and collecting should be fun. As soon as you start to get upset when opening packs and are disappointed you did not pull something worth a lot of money, that's where you've loose the whole thing as a hobby for me.
The Yugioh comparison completely misses the fact that Pokemon as a brand also has a popular show and game series outside of the TCG. Valid points but as a brand, Pokemon is doing well and has other routes for on-boarding younger fans.
True, in order for new fans to keep getting into collecting this has to stop. I hope people, mainly scalpers, lose some money and stop seeing it as an investment cause its one of the dumbest investments there is. Put your money in something not so volatile and we will be all good.
I agree, if a market crash doesn't happen then it will definitely hurt the longevity of the hobby. I'd give it another year or two before that happens, given that new sets coming out this year are too hyped for it to die down.
A market reset wouldn’t be the worst thing-prices are out of control, and it’s made collecting way less fun. I miss the days when it was about the cards, not just the value. Hopefully, a correction brings back some balance!
I wish finding products was easier, at the end of the day I enjoy opening packs but it’s gotten to the point where I can’t find anything at all in stores.
Market needs to correct for sustainability, issue is there is very little to no exclusivity in this modern era. Some of the Pokemon Center ETB's kind of provide that but that's changing too. I've been actually buyng some prize pack series because they are tougher to come by.
Hi from France ! Prices keeps rising its crazy. Only good thing i got before this is the bubble mew. Thanks for all the content you release, helps alot ! Cya on next stream
I have high hopes for pokemon to print Prismatic as much as they can. They did not do that with 151, but from the other hand they never announced 151 reprint :)
I started last november after neo evo, im liking the roller coaster so far , my wallet not so much, but im opening, enjoying and keeping what i like and selling what i dont like to recover some. i feel that having no product in shelves is better for my economy and a way to calm the urges from buying everything in a frenzy, second market is a no no!. i wish to open 151 set, the nostalgia 2 strong there. Love your content!
I legit laughed out loud at the 12:11 mark when you did that karate chop with the sound effect LOL but yes your point of kids not having access to cards is important, its crucial to the longevity of the TCG
This reminds me of the Van Gogh Pikachu. Even though the Moonbreon card didn’t have time to grow in this new set the fact that it has a story of people fighting in stores over it already gives it that unique value. Plus, the pull rates are incredibly tough, which adds to its appeal
The market won't crash to any reasonable level where people can buy whatever they want. You have to look ahead and currently Japanese is massively underrated.

Keep going! Love the channel i never miss an episode man.
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it.
The sneaker community no longer fights for pairs in Australia. Jordan’s are sitting on shelves that we used to line up all night for. It was fun while it lasted haha hopefully Pokémon outlasts the downturn we will most likely be in for a while. Great vid! Just subbed.
Blooming waters - does anyone know of it will be in stores on the 7th Feb in Australia? Because I've heard nothing 😢
Love these videos lately. Also hoping that prices go down so normal people can open boosters!
Thank you for your videos! They are helping me get into the hobby is a smart way.
Everything is so expensive in Pokemon right now, winning a celebration’s Umbreon from you is probably the only way I can grow my collection.
Great info as usual ! Thank you please keep doing this.❤🎉
Love your content, me and my buddies tried getting into getting stock up to get a table at a convention up but everything is so expensive rn and we can’t really get into it because it cost so much, scalpers kinda killed the dream:(
Really hope that at least some of the sets drop in value.
“It’s kinda gross bro…” LOL love it.
It was even stolen a truck full of prismatic Evo products at day 1 in my country, the situation is going crazy
I agree it’s getting out of hand. What is your favorite Scarlet violet set to open?
Loving your videos. Look forward to them everyday! Keep them coming 😊😊
Thank you! Will do!
Haha was feeling it!
I’ll be waiting for the market crash haha
its rough seeing prices this high, ive started looking at collecting other things like models while waiting for prices to drop
For me I wasn’t allowed to collect cards as a kid, but all my friends did! So this is kind of a way of reclaiming my childhood.
Same here lol
@not allowed? Can you explain? Just curious don’t feel obligated to explain if you don’t want to.
@@pricejuice parents thought it was a waste of money, so they wouldn’t allow me to buy any
I see
I was introduced to PTCG about 4 months ago through RUclips shorts showing Paldean Fates pack openings, especially the Gardevoir sir.
In Japan Pokemon is still huge with kids but pack price is under $2 (about the same as a 600ml bottle of Coke) yet here in Aus pack price is $7-$8 (over 2x the price of a bottle of Coke)
Parents just don’t wanna spend that much on a pack of cards for their kid to play with, footy cards are $4, parents would much rather be spending that amount on a pack of cards
Thanks for all the good points. I will only try to get what I can afford for now. :)
Agreed! Accessibility is key for longevity. Hope tpci can print to demand to allow more people into the hobby
Your videos took me back to this amazing hobby, and following your advices I have to say that is not going so bad so far ;)
in my honest opinion a combination of 2 things will help crash the market:
1 - Pokémon international prints the dogshit out of a whole bunch of sets making everything widely available.
Always love the content! Just recently started collecting and the info is very Helpful!
Appreciate you watching!
I’ve been being patient and I hope it pays off
The Yugioh comparison completely misses the fact that Pokemon as a brand also has a popular show and game series outside of the TCG.
I'm always looking out for Umbreon. And I agree we need a crash to get the Scalpers out. Mass production and do not slow drip it.
Love the content Phil. Keep it up. And also love the umbreon 🎉
Thanks for watching! I’ll see you there
I have high hopes for pokemon to print Prismatic as much as they can.
Thanks for the knowledge
I legit laughed out loud at the 12:11 mark when you did that karate chop with the sound effect LOL but yes your point of kids not having access to cards is important, its crucial to the longevity of the TCG
This reminds me of the Van Gogh Pikachu. Even though the Moonbreon card didn’t have time to grow in this new set the fact that it has a story of people fighting in stores over it already gives it that unique value. Plus, the pull rates are incredibly tough, which adds to its appeal
Great stuff man!
Thanks for the content. May you make a Video about the older cards price increase because of the new Hype? Greets ❤
Wait so are you saying all cards need to crash or just the main cards rn like the alt art Pikachu or all the eevelutions
Love the vids and these prices are insane!! What is your most reliable site to check accurate prices of cards in your personal opinion?
The market won't crash to any reasonable level where people can buy whatever they want. You have to look ahead and currently Japanese is massively underrated.
