Wood ash contains potash lye - the wood from the previous fire, plus water, creates a cleaning solution that will shift any buildup of wood tar on the glass. It's probably also finely abrasive, but not hard enough to scratch the glass. If the fire is burning properly, the glass only needs cleaning a few times throughout the winter, but yeah, water plus ash will do it.
Theres that pig again! Stealth star of the advent 2024. After going on a 20 minuet trek to the bus stop for my bus to not arrive (they are once every two hours), returning home, and drying off from the wind, wet, and cold. It was nice to sit cozy and warm with this as a psychological warmth boost.
I think that was the nicest, 'most perfect' pre Christmas chillout episode, yet. It's just so relaxing, to watch someone build a cozy little fire and cuddle his dog. Hope, you're enjoying a peaceful Sunday 🕯️🕯️
Shrimp Cottage looks amazing in the snow, that opening sequence was brilliant. Gentle snowfall days are the best, you can go for a ramble and not get blasted by wind and blinded by snow, or you brew up a pot of coffee and read a book/watch a movie and gaze at the snow thru the window. There's something almost primal about a little iron fireplace like yours, feeding logs in, feeling that warmth and staring into the flames.
Underappreciated might be the amount of work in setting up all those cameras and the editing afterward. Entire teams are assembled to produce this sort of thing, so jolly well done!
I've had a horrid, miserable day, and this was such a tonic to come home to. Even if it may be hard to convey in a single little comment, please know that you are very much appreciated. Thank you.
Unfortunately, real fires are a lot of work. When I had one. I always wished for a real parlourmaid to rake out the ashes , set the fire, light it successfully (the Shrimp makes it look too easy) then tend it hourly. In between times, she could cope with the extra dusting and carpet cleaning caused by the fire 😟
Thank you so much for these advent videos. As a chronically ill person who is unable to participate in the usual holiday joy due to my illnesses, these videos have given me something to look forward to every day. Having something to look forward to when you’re so ill can make all the difference. Thank you for these little glimmers of joy.
After the last fire dies out in late winter or early spring, it's easy to forget about it completely until the next season. I've gotten in the habit of doing a bit of cleanup in the summertime. I'll fully clean the firebox, ashpan, and glass, and even build the fire to start the next season. It always looks nice even when not in season, and it's lovely to have it ready and waiting on that first really cold day.
For anyone wondering what's happening at 2:15, wood ash is a beautiful solution to cleaning the glass in your oven. Soap used to be (or still is being) made with ash because of the potash lye. There is absolutely no need to buy products for these types of applications. My dad sells wood stoves and this is one of the pieces of advice he gives to every single customer. Also sidenote: if you oven window frequently turns black, it's because you are not giving your oven enough air. For anyone that wants a longer explanation: the combustion is less complete and you end up with a ton of byproducts which get caught in the water vapor released by the wood as it burns in its initial stages. The glass windows is the "coldest" part of the oven, so that's where the water vapor condensates on the most.
There is something about going out on a cold winters day, chopping wood for a warm cozy fire to keep the house warm that just speaks on a different level. We dont have a fireplace at home so this video is a wonderful thing!
I recognize and appreciate the ritual in a wood stove. I usually will fire up in the morning before its light. After kindling and ignition, i will sit on the ottoman, opposite the stove and just stare at the fire. This truly feeds my soul in the winter months. Thank you so much, Mike, for this Advent calendar. This has been such a feast for my slightly cynical and jaded soul. I hope yourself, Jenny, and Eva have a marvelous holiday. Cheers to you Sir.
I live in a pueblito (pop. 300) in the foothills of the sierra Nevada, near Granada, Spain. We're having a cold snap just now, ground frost in the morning and sub zero temps. Trying to warm these houses is a challenge, as they're built to be cool and move heat out. I'm just about to light my log fire, which I'm not great at doing, so watching The Shrimp Technique has been helpful. I especially like the glass cleaning trick, thanks for that! It's a beautiful day here, the usual clear blue sky and sunshine, but that means no insulation come nightfall. I hope all is well in the Shrimp household. X
Thanks for the lovely video, no words needed to explain it, the snow and even Eva played a part in this story. (A dog asleep in front of a log burner is a lovely sight.) By the way, I make my own fire lighters by dipping pine cones in melted candle wax from spent scented candles and the BabyBel wax cases. Let them dry and then use three per fire. I collect the cones during the year when walking in forests and woodlands. Thanks for posting, I'm really loving these. ..... Just about to light my log burner.
That's so funny that the wood stove is inside a fireplace! Also really appreciate you cleaning the glass so we can see the fire better :) what a cute cozy time
This was a hit of nostalgia! My childhood home was primarily heated by woodstove in the winter. My dad had put up a section of picket fence in front of the hearth, to keep us kids from getting too close and burning ourselves when we were little, and we'd hang our stockings up on the fence-posts. The cats figured out pretty quickly that my brother and I couldn't get the gate open, so they're jump onto the hearth anytime they needed a break from dealing with loud, clingy little monsters like us.
Gorgeous setting, but I can't help but think of how you've had to be outside for probably 3x as long as we have seen to place & retrieve the cameras! Such dedication to cinema
It has been many years since I've been in a house with a working fire-heating setup. Growing up, it was always the kids' responsibility to set the fire up, usually around midday, so it could be lit in the evening as soon as the cold started to settle in. I know my little heat pumps are far more efficient and such, but I sometimes look back at those days and remember the calm evenings, with the TV off, reading and chatting around the open fire my dad built.
i wanted to say thank you for sharing more of your home and your fire with us this holiday season. my husband and i hope you, jenny, eva, and your whole family have a wonderful christmas.
Oh, i do love a bit of slow tv, very relaxing. All that was needed to set the fire scenes was an old mantel clock ticking in the background. Well done, you have set my Sunday morning up perfectly.
Just watch, he will now document his venture out into the snow to a village antique shop, where he will find a derelict art deco timepiece and restore it in Studio Shrimp.
Even though it is warm and a bit humid here, there is still something comforting about a log fire - with the added benefits of a gorgeous dog of course. 🎄
* sigh * How snug and warm it is to have an Atomic Shrimp caring for us. Lovely snow day. In the Touraine, where it's 4°C on this drizzly day, we've had exactly one frosty morning in mid-November. Oh, well, winter's not here yet...
Wowzers, such a fantastic idea the advent calendar, thoroughly enjoying every day, really helping the Christmas spirit to bloom, thank you Mr and Mrs Shrimp and Eva, merry Christmas to you all x ❤ 🎅🌲🌟
Ooooh short sleeves, you did make me feel cold! Thanks for the warm fire Mike. I’ve got to somehow get my hair washed today and it’s freezing and wet here, although not snowing. I might have to give in and put the heat on 😱🤯🙀. The things we do to avoid pneumonia. 🤦🏼♀️
Cant beat a log fire in the winter, who would of thort ash would bring a gleam to a oven like glass window! I would pop some tatties in foil in there just because I love baked tatties done on an open fire rather than oven/microwave, like my skins almost burnt. Awwww Eva getting loves & playing is so adorable. Have a lovely Sunday Shrimp & Jenny & Eva of cors!
My grandpa loves watching the fire and when he's in a good mood he tells storys from his past. We live in Germany and he used to live in the GDR. I had the luck to be born too late to be part of that time in history, but thanks to his tales I got to know how it would have been like.
Snow in dorset is pretty rare, so cannot believe Mr. Shrimp will not do a building the snownan video. If i had money on the sweepstake, id stick a fiver on Christmas eve!
Ahh the nostalgia! Winters warmed by the heat of the log burning stove, friends and family brought together to enjoy the warming glow. This is the best example of "hygge".
As cozy and luxurious it is for us- having videos everyday- I can imagine producing a video every day must be quite exhausting and not that cozy in the end to me your videos are like sweet and fried mincemeat sandwiches always but I feel the slight urge to pour them out like biblical King David once poured out water though he craved it because it was too much of a risk for his men obtaining it
Very lovely video, wouldn’t have minded if it was longer! I always love to put on fire videos in the background, but a lot of time they are looped and that just feels weird, a human subconsciously knows what a fire should look and sound like, logs burn down, they don’t keep re-appearing from the ashes like a fenix. Every sound is unique and at random, in looped video’s you quickly pick up on the pattern. It’s a rare breed of people that manage to pull of real life long fire video’s. And I think you are one of them. Don’t worry, Eva barks are welcome. Warm greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱.
Did you notice the hand twisted toasting fork on the left of the fire? Maybe toasting something on the fire is to come. Last time it was muffins if I remember correctly.
Lovely video, I've got a multifuel stove that I can't wait to get installed and this just makes me want to get it installed even quicker, you can't beat a real fire.
My parents still have a solid fuel fire, and zi learned how to light a fire at a young age, using sticks, rolled up newspaper and a match, and to help it burn quicker, a dusting of sugar would encourage the burn. Toast and of cours crumpets cannot be Beaton toasted on an open fire
How did you clean the glass?! What is this miracle technique!
@@AtomicShrimp It's very thoughtful of the fire to provide its own cleaning solution :)
In past times even used as toothpaste
Still i believe. @@marcusfridh8489
Hmm, I always used to use vinegar with newspaper but I'll have to try that when I get my new multi fuel stove installed.
Eva makes the best happy noises.
So deeply satisfying. Im not sure any other channel on RUclips has the variety of Atomic Shrimp.
Lindybeige might come close, although he does focus more on history.
SaveItForParts is also quite varied with what he does, but it’s hard to find someone who’s as varried as Mr. Shrimp🍤!
Ikr idk if it’s because he reminds me of my dad but it’s very therapeutic to watch
I'm working nightshift in the sorting office all month, it's been really nice watching these every day when I get home.
This advent calendar has been such a wonderful surprise.
Theres that pig again! Stealth star of the advent 2024.

I’m not usually a massive fan of slow tv. But there was something really satisfying about this one. Much love to all this time of year
i feel like this is going to be a gateway drug for a lot of folks to start catching all the Slow TVs 😆
@@amanateewell, “just one more then” thanks! 😊😂

What a wonderful birthday gift you have given me. Thank you, Sir Shrimp.

Happy birthday! Prayers for a wonderful year x

My thoughts exactly!
It's absolutely lovely!
I hope Storm Daragh has left that wonderful garden intact. (We're going to be dealing with some aftermath but the house is fine and nobody is hurt.)
That Shrimp’s wood box is a wooden box is just very, very Shrimp. Snow outside and log fire inside is so cosy. 🔥
I've had a horrid, miserable day, and this was such a tonic to come home to. Even if it may be hard to convey in a single little comment, please know that you are very much appreciated. Thank you.
I miss having a real fire, nothing better on a snowy day than sitting in front of a blazing fire ❤
This is very lovely and comforting. I always wished I had a real fireplace in our apartment. Thanks for showing us yours.

@@rosemarymee Well worth the effort, at least on occasion. Nothing better than the family enjoying the fire at Christmastime.

There is nothing like the radiated warmth of a woodburner on a winter's day !

@1:22 that cautious walk in the first snow walk of winter before complacency sets in. 😉
