Ha! lovely old things remember back in late 80's getting of train at Liverpool Street & seeing 8 of them all lined up in a row, interesting classic cars as well! 👌
Yes, Liv Street had lots of RM routes back in the 80s......And others have mentioned all the cars in the background. All classics now but just everyday street scenes back then.....
The buses generally seemed a lot less clean then. And those early Metrobus' screeching brakes! Wow. 80s memories living in suburban West London. Nice vid, as usual.
Thank you.....the LT bus washing machines were so-so for getting a bus clean...you had to drive through very slow for the brushes to have time to work on all 4 sides of the bus...some of the Night Generalhands were a bit fast putting them through.....
Wow i drive in this area now and i just love seeing what used to be the case, I always have interests like that. Cant believe the 30 used to come up here and over the famous putney bridge lol Seems like back in the day these buses did long ass journeys! For example i drive the 14, everyone knows where it goes now, but back then im sure it said hackney on the blinds, thats crazy for example
Lots of routes went accoss London, the 12s went from South Croydon to Wembley! And with a vehicle allocation of over 100 buses! The 22s used to run through to Homerton which is just beyond Hackney Central. The 14s used to run to Hornsey Rise as well. Routes were cut back as the garages at each end of these long routes were in different bus operating companies when London Buses was split up for privitisation. Quite a lot of routes were split sadly.....
Soi Buakhao yes so i have noticed, i mean the privatisation is one thing, but i kinda wish routes stayed in some type of order per each garage also along with night routes. I think the tendering and all this competition is not needed, others may disagree, but running a service is something each company does and its hit and miss if another company or garage happen to get better results into whatever tfl expect. I saw the 14 saying hackney or something like that in another video so its weird to know that both routes i drive used to go all the way there, what about the 74 where was that, or is that a newer route? And wow the 12 used to go from croydon to wembley? That ridiculous 😂😂😂😂
@@ace-paidinfull5240 The 74 used to run from Camden Town to Roehamoton. Back in the 1960s and 70s some routes had a Sunday's only extension, like the 15s to Richmond or the 73s to Teddington!
@@ace-paidinfull5240 The full extent of the 12 route was from South Croydon Garage to Harlesden Willesden Junction although it invariably worked in two sections - for example South Croydon to Oxford Circus and Dulwich 'Plough' to Harlesden, meaning that all the buses served the busiest section of the route between which was between Dulwich and Oxford Circus. There were occasional exceptions: whilst still at 'Junior' school near Croydon in about 1962, I remember seeing a route 12 bus with its destination screen set for Park Royal Stadium, many miles beyond the customary terminus for buses from South Croydon. During the lengthy and painful political assasination of London Transport in the 1980s, the reason for long-established routes being altered became obvious - it was not because the travelling public suddenly demanded changes after 80 years of operation but because LT - no longer serving the public but its political masters instead - hacked routes about so they were generally confined to within one operating district rather than straddling two or three of them. One example, that route 8 stopped its traditional run run to Willesden Garage and diverted to Victoria instead had nothing to do with a sudden demand by passengers insisting immediate change to the traditional routing but was done to meet a politically-driven agenda. And, at that point, I left London, rather than witness the end of what was once probably the finest public transport operator in the world.

What a great video, thank you Peter. And, Soi, you really know your buses. Is the traffic as bad today as it was then? I'm sitting in my living room in Chicago and remembering all the good times back home. Thank you again!
My pleasure..... The traffic is worse today. More people in London plus lots of anti traffic measures from a road hating authority, forgetting the buses get caught up in it all.....
I used to drive the no 88,12 and 105 out of Shepherds Bush in early 1980's . My conductor was called "Gosh".I wish I knew then how much I would miss it now. What a blast!!

The light coloured exhaust coming from the DMS was a good colour for a diesel (blue is un-burnt fuel, black is burning oil!) and unusal for a DMS, they tended to be quite black smoke!
They were for the 37s which was booked to be RML from all its garages. But most mixed RM & RML sheds just saw them as Routemasters and allocated them as required....plenty escaped onto the 237s....
Yeh I agree, those were days with real freedom now days its all rules and more like penalising us people and control and just making everything though and expensive. Those were good days when you could park anywhere and was easy to drive very less speed cameras and less traffic also good cars and desgins, I would love to go back in them timez
Those DMS , looked like a right old state ..... side posters hanging off the end of the poor bus. I bet these buses get washed and serviced at least once a month back then...
All buses were serviced as they returned to the garage each evening including a trip through the washer. Although you had to go through slow for the brushes to cover all the bus. Go too fast and it would miss bits!
The days, weeks, years I traveled using this route while living in Isleworth. It brings back very good memories when life was still very simple.
Learn Swahili Easily i wish life was simple now boy
yeah me too

I was 20, the best days of our lives
Amazing to see the old route masters in action.... and the cars from that era... a great bit of nostalgia
That's the good thing about these films, its looking at what else was around then, things that have long since disappeared!

I was a learner on the RML out of Hownslow garage in 1986

I used to use the buses on Putney Bridge a lot especially the 93 and 85 and the 264 to Roehampton 😀
4:12 I remember growing up with the sound of those brakes!
The screeching brakes were a feature of Metrobuses!
I left London that year, and my memories of it remain as shown.
Life seemed a bit less frantic then....
These buses look & sound better than 2days buses
The 37 used to be a major trunk route from Peckham to Hounslow
Yes, although there wern't many journeys that ran the full length. The route used to run in two over-lapping halfs most of the day.....
