- Foraging is a popular pastime in China's Yunnan Province, where it's common for people to pick wild greens for cooking.
Yunnan is one of China's most biodiverse regions, home to 52% of the country's plant species. We learned a bit about foraging from food influencer Dianxi Xiaoge, who taught us all about shuixiangcai, a perfumy green that thrives near water, and made two dishes with it.
This video is the last of our six-episode collaboration with Dianxi Xiaoge. With over 11 million followers worldwide, Dianxi Xiaoge is known for her cooking videos showcasing the traditional food of Yunnan Province. We went to live with her for a week and learned how to make her most iconic dishes.

Thank you Clarissa for identifying the various plants by their scientific names as well as their common names (and of course by their name in Mandarin). I’m a horticulture and food enthusiast and I’m always so curious to know about all of the roots, seeds, bark, berries, spices etc that Dianxi uses in her dishes. Speaking of which, do you know what the scientific name for “tsaoko”? I notice she uses it a lot. I think it translates to “black cardamom” but without a real botanic name one can’t be sure.

Aaaaah Im always weak for foraging wild greens & edible plants 😭😭😭😭 I really love it everytime my mom and I go to somewhere forest-y because then she'll show me which plant is edible, what kind of plant this and that since she grew up in a village but my mom is growing old and she gets tired easily 😭😭😭 still makes me sad how I didnt take advantage of when she was still younger, I would ask her to take me to forage wild plants 😭 I hope we can still have time & energy to do that before she get even older than now. Xiaoge seems more like a people person. She converse well. I think Li Ziqi is more on the reserved side, she's a little more awkward and nervous around people not in her circle.

A question seeking further understanding of how ingredient pairing works?
Actually, the addition of the egg was strange to me so I would have asked as well. There are dishes that are prepared with very specific ingredients, and then there are randomly thrown together dishes like this one that are more products of practicality.
