i saw this movie just to kill time and it turned out to be a really nice time at the cinema. its a simple interesting movie with a good performance from adam driver. i recommend it to anyone that hasnt seen it
Paterson goes to work everyday to so that data can access his sensibilities and maybe be part of a poem. His mate accessed creativity at home, which was basically her art studio. She created experiences. He accessed experiences. There were three references to a fireball, which seemed to be me to make fun of those kinds of movies. The final scene, when he's staring deeply toward the waterfall: I felt like he was driving his poetry bus. Trillions of molecules were moving aside.
I think it is a movie about post traumatic soldier trying to find peace after the horrors he have seen in the war and he deals with that through his writing and by dedicating himself to the woman he loves, and also she is from some Indian or middleeastern ethnicity, so maybe it's also him trying to make peace and love the people he heve been in war with and try to love them.. I think he saw a death of kids or maybe even twins and it's hard for him, the movie is not saying that but you see how he wakes up so naturally early in the morning, we see his picture as a soldier twice, we see how he disarms the guy in the bar so naturally, one of the young guys on the bus has a prosthetic leg, and the movie hints all of that in a gentle way. It is also a movie about being an American in his wifes perspective, being a good wife, making cupcakes like a good housewife, she also wants to be a country singer and she is dealing with the conflict of identity, this is why she always paints everything in black and white and in the begining she listens to a indian or arabic song or something like that and then she wants to be a country singer, I think this is her conflict. This is a movie about people trying to live their ordinary lives but without thinking about the past, its about dealing with the present and leaving the past behind you, its about how we have nothing without love, war is about hate and he wants to move past that and dedicate himself to love. This is how I see it..
I'm so hyped for this movie. Thanks for being a place that reviews these little films and gets awareness for them. Also, THE MOONRISE KINGDOM kids are in this together; that's enough to get me to see it.
I was starting to wonder what happened to those two. It's like they held their own against some great adult actors in one of my favorite movies and then just disappeared. The girl was in Manchester By the Sea recently as well.
i finally caught up with this last night on hoopla, and i thought it was really great. personally, i found it a relief to find a movie where there was no twist or shock or act of malice or cruelty. it's great a testament to normality!
I just finished watching this movie and I think it might be my favorite movie of last year. It just hit me in all the right places and was so refreshing to watch.
I saw this was a movie about a poet from Patterson and got so excited that someone finally did a WIlliam Carlos Williams biopic. Is there no reference to him in this? Seems strange to ignore, but it is Jim Jarmusch...
I just saw this movie a couple of weeks ago and of course it’s different than anything I’ve seen ,and I couldn’t get it out of my mind after seeing it ,it is very beautiful and quiet and I love Marvin the dog!
dirk diggler We should question if he’s really happy: He has to tolerate his wife’s crazy idiosyncrasies; that he wakes up with her but always goes to the pub alone in the evening so never falls asleep with her; he has a clear dislike of the dog but suffers it… We see that he was a US Marine (evidently from the photo on the bedside and him tackling the ‘gunman’ in the pub) and we can wonder whether he has witnessed something harrowing in service which leaves him craving ‘normality’ even if it means sacrificing true happiness. Also, his love of routine may stem from his military service. Also, there’s a motif of famous people from Paterson who were relatively ordinary in comparison to their peers in showbusiness or sports. This idea of not being awful but not being great is echoed in Paterson’s poetry writing (not awful - obviously because it’s actually the work of Ron Padgett but not mindblowing either). His wife is a figure of fun but it turns out her cupcakes do quite well at the market...again, good but not amazing. This idea of ‘not quite exciting enough’ is shown in the few tension building scenes - the gang bangers and the dog, the near bus explosion and the gunman in the pub. All of them potentially fatal and thrilling...but all just dissolve into nothing. His name, Paterson, shows he’s an embodiment of the town’s dire unremarkable banality but we have to ask whether it’s by his nature or by his own choice; I’m leaning toward the latter. This is much more than a nice-guy-living-life film. I really enjoyed it for the fact that is isn’t just a tale of a man living a normal life.
oh and the idea of the twins and black and white (her art and the guy playing chess) could represent the two options he has - the strive for fame or the fight to remain below the parapet. ...also, him embodying the town is clear as h interacts with all walks of life with ease. the Black people in the bar, the gang-bangers, the rapper in the launderette. He's almost ominpotent.
All good points, easy to miss some in one viewing. You're right. Despite the "niceness" of Paterson's everyday life, there is a constant undertone of melancholy. I'll watch it again.
@@davidwright82 The film was good, but the way you write about it is basically the most intelligent thing I've read in years. Who are you? Message me I'd love to chat
Wrong again Bob. The briefcase light is most likely an homage to the trunk of the Chevy Malibu in Repo Man (84). That was three years before I've Heard The Mermaids Singing (87).
Hmm. I saw this yesterday, and while I can agree that the tone of the film was refreshingly zen, it was zen without creative transcendence in some ways. For instance, the women in this film were written as such cliched characters, it stood out as oddly empty against male characters of actual substance. For example, the wife of the protagonist, is an artsy spin on the manic pixie, and she was honestly given no other reason to exist in this film than to be the quirky beautiful object of the protagonist's adoration. (E.g., Did she ever even leave the house while Paterson was at work? Did she have friends? Where is she from? How did they meet? Did she ever have a job... or a history... or family... or education... or *anything*?) The woman at the bar who was trying to dump her ex... she literally just smiled, head scratched, and shrugged off entire scenes and opportunities to show depth. It's just odd that so many female characters with such screen time had no opportunity to do anything with it... and the cinematic experience suffered for it, in my opinion. So it was kind of a meh film. Or maybe "meh plus" : if you can get beyond the glaringly underwritten key supporting character, it *will* make you feel in some ways, question some things about how you live, and better appreciate the fullness of a "small" life. Not a must see - don't pay for a cinema ticket on this one like I did -- but catch it on Netflix sometime down the road.
I haven't seen a lot of Jarmusch's films but they're hit and miss for me. I liked Night on Earth & Coffee and Cigarettes, didn't like Broken Flowers or Ghost Dog. I'll probably see this one though.
Anyone that says movies like Paterson and Boyhood suck just because they have no plot are being idiotic. Can anyone explain the plot to Pulp Fiction? No, it has as much of a plot as those other two films, but it's still one of the greatest films ever made. Movies don't need plots to be good.
I love simple movies, but this one really dragged for me. I was constantly expecting some sort of twist, some reveal to give purpose to all the odd things, the twins, the emphasis on the watch, the differences in how they wake up, the different things the wife gets interested in, the whole cyclical nature of the film, etc. But it goes nowhere. Despite a million references being given. Perhaps that's my own fault for having expectations but it truly made this really tedious to sit through. It's too perfect, too quiet, too basic. These people, while nice people are not interesting to me. They have hints of being interesting, they're creative characters but very rarely do they ever exhibit anything that I find interesting to watch. For me I want more Dinner with Andre and less, mundane existence of a life of two plain content human beings. I am not content, I get very little pleasure out of seeing two good happy content people living out their daily mundane lives.
thePANDEMIC I'm sure a lot of people felt that way. The kind of entertainment that you want: conflict, plot points, entertainment devices... is being critiqued by this movie. I would actually argue that it isn't "perfect". Most movies are about perfect people in an imperfect situation, within the perfect structure of the script. Whereas this movie was about imperfect people within an open-ended and therefore imperfect script.
thePANDEMlC : I appreciate your candor, because I am that person. I don’t right now want a movie about how I live. I want something gripping. Not Zen and the Art of Paterson. Not right now.
I'm sorry, but i didn't like it................. at all. I think it's one of those pseudo intellectual pretentious pieces of garbage that thinks of itself much much better than it actually is, literally nothing new happens in the movie, just drags along for close to two hours. 1/10 for me, the one is for the cinematography
the trailer makes the movie seem very pretentious and i don t like the pseudophysics talk :/ .. but i guess i ll give it a chance if the WTF team likes it! xD
This movie is something else. It's not everything about the storyline and amount of happening. Jarmusch have unique style and aesthetic of pacing. He works more on meditative and instinct level of storytelling.
i saw this movie just to kill time and it turned out to be a really nice time at the cinema. its a simple interesting movie with a good performance from adam driver. i recommend it to anyone that hasnt seen it
Do you recommend it to people who have already seen it?
Loved the scene in the bar where Adam Driver's character gets the giggles. Excellent film!
You had me at "Adam Driver"

What was the crack with twins in this film????
Jim Jarmusch is the fan of Yasujiro Ozu. No wonder its so subtle.
I'm so hyped for this movie. Thanks for being a place that reviews these little films and gets awareness for them. Also, THE MOONRISE KINGDOM kids are in this together; that's enough to get me to see it.

TJ Hastie They're in other things. Smaller films, but I just love seeing them anywhere.

That's why those kids looked so familiar!
1:44 the 2 kids from Moonrise Kingdom.
Steven W holy shit you're right.
Good catch!
OMG Nice catch. The girl seemed familiar!
i finally caught up with this last night on hoopla, and i thought it was really great. personally, i found it a relief to find a movie where there was no twist or shock or act of malice or cruelty. it's great a testament to normality!
I am in love with Golshifteh Farahani. Since the Iranian movie About Elly at least for sure.
Asghar Farhadi. Brilliant film-maker.
I just finished watching this movie and I think it might be my favorite movie of last year. It just hit me in all the right places and was so refreshing to watch.
When did this movie come out? anyone know? it seems like an interesting movie.Thank you
Good analogy. This movie is like drinking tea. The best laid back, non abrasive movie I've seen in years
I am very surprised that we all agree on this movie. I usually only agree with Christy. Great review!
Didn't William Carlos Williams write Paterson? Why isn't this mentioned?
The scene with the little girl is phenomenal.
Oh yeah with the poem water fall.
I saw this was a movie about a poet from Patterson and got so excited that someone finally did a WIlliam Carlos Williams biopic. Is there no reference to him in this? Seems strange to ignore, but it is Jim Jarmusch...
His is mentioned many times in the film, particularly at the end in a really sweet, closing scene.
Karl D Paterson*
Beautiful piece of work ...
I just saw this movie a couple of weeks ago and of course it’s different than anything I’ve seen ,and I couldn’t get it out of my mind after seeing it ,it is very beautiful and quiet and I love Marvin the dog!
Is his last name spelled with two t's or one?
Hopefully I get to see this this weekend. This looks to be by far my movie of the year.
It’s not a bad movie at all. I’m just too “unpoetic” or just full on uncultured to appreciate/understand it.
feels like they missed the whole point of the movie. there are so many layers to it...great film.

...the movie is a poem, essentially. on the surface it's one thing but look deeper and it's something else.

This looks really good
can't stand adam driver personally but this does look kinda cool
you know him personally?
rss313 personally I love Adam driver we make out sometimes but I wish we were more I wish it upon a star
When's it released in Chicago?
How would I know?
Patterson: Hi...my name is Patterson...I'm your new bus driver.
Passenger: We already know you're Kylo Ren!
Wrong again Bob. The briefcase light is most likely an homage to the trunk of the Chevy Malibu in Repo Man (84). That was three years before I've Heard The Mermaids Singing (87).
This looks great. Is William Bibbiani Permanent? I am not complaining but what about the rotten tomato guy?
they go and come depending on their personal schedules since they're on some sort of contractual basis
Thanks for recommending this movie! I just found out about it because of this channel, and I'm going to see it this afternoon - thanks!

This movie was just so damn great.
Is this a movie about robert paterson the actor from twilight
yeah, its that part when they go on a school trip in twilight,
with a slight plot twist... Robert Pattinson(Paterson) is the bus driver
This film is somehow a representation of real life. Throughout the film you expect something to happen because of some hints but no, there are not.
A movie where nothing happens, well, at least it didn't take 12 years to make.
juan gomez go watch your capeshit
NOTHING HAPPENS
I haven't seen a lot of Jarmusch's films but they're hit and miss for me. I liked Night on Earth & Coffee and Cigarettes, didn't like Broken Flowers or Ghost Dog. I'll probably see this one though.
Adam Driver better get nominated for an Oscar
Itai Kahari I would've preferred Driver to be nominated over Mortenson.
why are people spelling Paterson with two t's?

Is it anything like Only Lovers Let Alive, because I hated that movie.
Alexander Forbes God me to it was awful
Jim Jarmusch. I'm there.
When I was a child I never learned that.
great review. ;) doctor who xmas soon?
A movie for bus drivers..That they can enjoy.
JimJam FTW!
Wow. Ben really let himself go.
Great movie
I still don't know what it's about.
about a Bus Driver, and his daily life...period.
wtf was up with the twins

kapa1611 Did you watch it?
This movie was horrible and nothing happened there. No character growth. It is only entertaining because of Drivers great performance.
yarimo How much character growth can happen to someone in a week realistically?
This movie is something else. It's not everything about the storyline and amount of happening. Jarmusch have unique style and aesthetic of pacing. He works more on meditative and instinct level of storytelling.
no chaacter growth?
I think you didnt pay attention to the end.
I loved exactly what you don´t liked, that "nothing happens" how you call it.
Da only reason I watched this movie is cuz I grew up in Paterson but the movie was low key boring asf
This movie sucked for me
