Extreme Furniture Makeover | Spraying Chalk Paint & Adding New Legs

  • I'm doing my most extreme makeover ever. I'm throwing all the techniques I've learned from my furniture flipping friends at this piece of furniture. I'll be adding a new base and new legs, grain filling, and spraying chalk paint and topcoat. You will not recognize this piece when I'm done with it. It was a wild ride, and I learned a lot along the way.

I still have my mid century table! Left home early 95 with nothing except old stuff stored. I prefer it!
St Vincent de Paul donated a ved and washing machine for my son and I.
I'm glad I found my original mid century table bought beginning of 1970. Solid teak. Cost a fair bit, and it's still immaculate, getting its update too. Going back to 50's just like me, lol

Seeing your struggles with this piece and how accepting you are of the learning curve makes me want to go grab a piece of furniture and just start playing with it! Patience takes the prize because that table turned into a treasure. Thanks so much for sharing these nuggets.

For years I've owned a very early 50's sold oak cabinet very dark brown. I'm 70, an it was not new when i got it!I've never liked the heavy detail on the doors or drawers. Always had plans for the elephant in the room. Need it for storage, cannot afford to replace. Idea has been in my head for years, first work, then health held me back.
    You call it a Hutch.
Stripped off side doors and drop down door in middle kept glass and wooden shelves.
Next stage. Turn both drawer fronts to other sides. Do the same with both doors. Paint black. Thinking upper in a slightly paler shade.
Vintage raised stencil on each door in lighter shade, then long stencil on drawers with just a smidgen of pewter gilding if I can find some.
    I want it subtle.
You could have turned your doors, there being solid, though it turned out beautifully.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Not every time you get a perfect piece to work on. Im a newbie and i already ran into a disaster because i didn't check the dresser i bought off market place. But i was able to fix it after watching at least 200 videos and some arguments with my husband. At the end it was worth it.
I have learnt a lot in this video. Thank you.
And yes i would love to learn about the sanders. And if you could share a video about Wagner sprayer that would be amazing. I want to invest in one but still hesitant a bit. And since I'm in Canada half the year i have to work in doors. My garage is freezing now a days.
Thank you Christina. I always end up learning something new from you. I love your review on different products. It makes it easier for me.

Hi Christina, I totally feel your pain with the sprayer. You have to be so so careful with the settings. This summer I did kitchen cabinets. And I had primed the first coat with a brushes. It looked smooth and silky. My fiance suggested I use the sprayer for the second coat to " save time." It changed the surface to an orange peel finish. Fortunately I only did it to a few drawers and cabinet fronts. But I had a total meltdown! I had to let them dry, resand and did them all over. I totally get where you are coming from in this. In any case your piece looks GREAT!

Thank you for sharing the good, bad, and this went really wrong. I have done the same with my sprayer. Dif. Paints act different for sure. YES, very interested in the sander, the dust collecting system. I am looking at the surf prep now. I get my 2nd new hip monday, argh, laid up again for 5 weeks!! I plan on having a new sanding system, when i can have at it again.
