This port looked incredible. It's such a shame it had to stop. I grew up in the Nintendo 64 era and although Portal 64 did not exist back then, it did bring back an odd sense of nostalgia.
Definitely. I used to play N64 games on emulator in the early 2000s and this port feels like part of those memories.

The people who optimize Nintendo 64 are crazy. There's a video by Kaze Emanuar where he optimized Mario 64 to run 6 times faster. VROOM VROOM!
Kaze's stuff is equally crazy! They made quite the achievmeent optimizing the heck of the mario 64 code base to at some point seems like they created their very own engine out of it. Feels like they replace most of if not all of the OG code at that point.
@Deliveredmean42 At this point, he has. He's re-wrote every line of code & optimized every model and texture to the point where none of it is the same as what Nintendo used.
And hopefully it'll require a rom of Mario 64 so Nintendo doesn't rip out his intestines.

It's so weird to see Valve take down a fan project since to me they were the ones that were really chill with mods, but I can understand them taking down Team Fortress source 2 and Portal 64, the former for using their assets, and the latter because of Nintendo.
If Nintendo was smart they would give this their ok. It is great pr showing what their old hardware can still do.
yeah, like, just reach out to the guy and give him a license to use the library (that, at this point, would be defunct if not by people like him anyway). No real IP to "protect" here.

I do need to point out the following: Valve never DMCA'd Portal 64. What they did, is reaching out to the creator, and explicitly made it clear that Nintendo will go after them legally. This is because Nintendo has some proprietary rights to the 64 libraries.
Edit: If it is unclear to some, Valve reached out mainly because their stamp of approval regarding this project can get them into trouble with Nintendo. And as you can tell, they didn't want that.

I hate how people think that Valve has changed and golden age Valve would've never done this when it comes to the takedowns of Portal 64 and TF2: Source 2. Both of the takedowns were justified because potentially getting sued by Nintendo isn't very nice and a mod team that straight up rips TF2 assets to S&Box, which is running on another engine than Source 1 and the game's creator (Garry Newman) who didn't get a permission to use Valve assets, it's justified to give a DMCA takedown for a project like that. I do feel kinda bad for the TF2: Source 2 dev team though, especially if they somehow didn't realize that it would be illegal.
Valve has still changed tho, not in this way.
@@ikagura Yeah, they have definitely changed and they were better back then, but Valve is still probably the only big corporation that I kinda like.
"Golden age valve" wouldnt have have DMCAd TF2 because half of their workshop addons are literally ripped from other games wholesale, almost famously so.

I don’t know why people are still defending valve on this. Valve didn’t have to tell him to stop working on his passion project, they could’ve just said hey we can’t publish this on steam and we can’t associate ourselves with it, which is what I would’ve expected but telling him to stop making the game is fucking shitty especially when Nintendo has completely ignored 99% of n64 mods like this.
Nintendo definitely shuts down fan games and that sucks too, but there was no indication that was going to happen with this game but valve did it instead. People should be critical of valve once in a while instead of just assuming they can do no wrong.
They said to switch libraries or stop. He didn't want to. If they let him go and continue developing it the way it was then they are legally liable. James could also get sued, and Valve didn't want that for either of them.
@@dudemydude4969why is valve legally liable for his decision if he self releases? Not defending Nintendo but some people are more excited to hate Nintendo than actually look at the situation, valve issued a cease and desist to the tf2 source 2 remake, valve told a man to stop making his passion project even though there was no legal liability whatsoever if he self released it.
I can’t even think of a n64 mod that’s gotten a cease and desist besides ones that are literally mods to Mario, Pokémon, etc. not saying Nintendo should issue cease and desist for those games but again, there was no chance he would be sued by Nintendo if he self released it and it’s fucked up valve told him he had to stop making his passion project. for the people wondering about tf2 s2:
valve dmca'd them because well, they just ripped the actual tf2 assets so yeah, the issue is that simple and valve's within their rights on this one.
James effed up hard by not just using something like UE5 and MAKING the game visualy look and audiable sound like N64 game.

Portal can run on an N64, but not on a Mac. We truly live in a society.
Kid named Wine:
Or virtualization.
Or Boot Camp if you have an Intel Mac.
Or the Game Porting Toolkit if you want to sit at a terminal for an hour.
If you can’t run Portal on a Mac, that’s your problem.
I... Don't think Nintendo would have much of a legal case against Valve at all. Against Jes sure, but Valve? They have no involvement with the development whatsoever, they are not hosting the download of the ROM or source code, he's not even distributing Valve's assets, those had to be ripped from Portal itself and converted to compile the ROM.
Nintendo has a case against James, maybe even a pretty strong one, but against Valve? I'm not doubting they wouldn't at least try to sue, but whether they'd have a winnable court case against Valve I think is highly debatable.
Why did Valve care if the project used libultra? It's neither their project nor their copyrighted SDK.
modern game give ZERO fcks about optimization, except CS2....
idk how that thing run smoothly on my potato laptop
Why tf would they care about a discontinued console from the 90s? Does Nintendo hate people having fun so much?!?
Valve and Nintendo should just work together to make the project officially sanctioned. Perhaps Valve could sell it, and Nintendo can release it as an anniversary surprise.
Portal 1&2 came to the Switch.
Put it on virtaul console or whatever they call it these days
Can you share the background music? It's really good!
Valve definetly did the right thing. It is better they have the project canceled now before both James and them have to deal with Nintendo.
Im still believing that the tf2 port was just lazy developers lying
Start boycotting Nintendo. It's time to let them know their place.
How could Nintendo go after valve for something they have nothing to do with?
the fan made source 2 port of tf2 was taken down because they were using stolen assets
I had been following this for a while, the time I stopped it got taken down.
Such a shame, it would bring back to live the old N64 If they start to make games again...
there is kind of a scene of new n64 games. Most are mods as far as I know, but some are very extensive. Look up Kaze if you're interested in mario 64 based stuff

Did Half-life come out in Pakistan?
I've no idea why Nintendo is so worried about a console that hasn't even been manufactured for 20 years getting a port of a 17 year old valve game. It's not like it will cost them any sales or anything.
This isn't the issue, it's about the libraries that are proprietary.
Copyright laws don't care if something isn't sold anymore.
Can you upload a mirror link of this rom?
Nintendo is kind of on the same level as ea nowadays 😂
You might even say it was a triumph
Imagine finding a game like this in 1997
valve should hire him or something
basically what happened is that a valve staff employee contacted james and told him to stop working on the mod, because he was using a Nintendo library, it's not evil or anything, and i see a lot of misinformation lately, so i thought it would be good to correct all misinformation floating around with this comment

Nintendo going bankrupt would be a net positive to the gaming industry.
I disagree. Nintendo having a thorough leadership overhaul would be a net positive. Their games are still awesome and their consoles, while underpowered, are unique and innovative.
Because having only Sony and Microsoft as the main two leaders on the Video Game market would be a good thing?
Nintendo may have some antiquated ways of thinking but they also made some of the most creative and defining games in video game history.
Sony and Microsoft do pretty AAAs but they look the same for a decade mechanically speaking.

Portal 64 is gone thanks to Valve’s DMCA Claim, but this Demake is a masterpiece.
Valve never DMCA-ed Portal 64, they reached out to the dev with concern that they and themselves would be pursued legally by Nintendo if the dev continued development.
@@RememberCitadeltrue
@@RememberCitadelof course Nintendo would do that because her bunch of limp dick buzz kills, there's a reason why I half life It's still going strong today in Nintendo has to constantly push out so many games that people stop talking about eventually.
@@RememberCitadelyeah what you said. It wasn’t specifically that they were making a fan game of a valve IP (there are plenty of those, including a half life top-down arcade shooter made in Unity) but because he was using proprietary Nintendo code libraries (which the dev chose to use over nonproprietary open source libraries as it didn’t at the time have the ability to do the things he needed,) and Valve didn’t want the risk of another megacorp (known for very liberally suing the shit out of people) suing them over the use of unauthorized code in a project utilizing their IP. It IS disappointing that the project is likely kill, and the world of copyright and Nintendo’s itchy legal trigger finger is shit, but the decision is understandable. The TFSource2 project (which WAS DMCA’d by Valve) being taken down was not because of it being about TF2 but because it used assets (3D models and animations) ripped from their games and imported into a different one without permission. Disappointing but understandable, IMHO. Wish DMCA and the broken copyright system didn’t exist but Valve does have a leg to stand on here.
I'm not a fan of Portal but this is very amazing port. I mean, forcing game like this to work on 30 years old console is something incredible. 1. Valve was concerned about getting sued and concerned about James getting sued by Nintendo for continuing this particular project due to it using proprietary Nintendo SDK code
2. TF2 S2 was DMCA-ed due to it using TF2 assets to make a full remake of TF2 in a engine other than Source. If you want a community ran TF2 experience, lemme recommend Team Fortress 2 Classic and Open Fortress
