This earlier version just feels like a mod for HL2, I think the final Portal looks very good.
I mean it basically was lol.
I love that HL and Portal are connected mainly because there's zero mention of the Combine. What in the world happened?
Glados alludes to them when she says "Things have changed since the last time you left the building. What's going on out there will make you wish you were back in here. I have an infinite capacity for knowledge, and even I'm not sure what's going on outside. All I know is I'm the only thing standing between us and them." The Combine just never bothered to check an abandoned salt mine in Michigan, which is a good thing considering their desperation to acquire local teleportation technology.

I agree, the Source Engine was a good foundation to add the 'Portal mechanics'. HL2 was rich with a whole library of assets that was good enough to test the game out before they perfected it in the retail copy.

I liked the old Pink and Blue Portals, I also thought the older portal gun was quite cool but it seemed better in the retail.

Ha! What a coincidence that you post this today! I've been workin with VCC this whole day lookin into Portal's Prospekt era and what's left over in the leaked map files! Ain't that ironic? To mention, I just went through everything, we have 4 2005 "prospekt" era maps in the files (lab_lvl1, lab_lvl3, styleguide_lab, and zoo_testarea,) as well as prospekt era assets left in the unused visgroups in background1, testchmb_a_01, 02, 03, 06, 07, 10, 11, and 14. We also have a huuuuge portion of the glados chase sequence from escape_01 that predates the glados fight that's used in Portal: Project Beta, and uses rocket turrets back when they were still laser turrets. Who knows, if I have the time, I might actually recreate the whole 2005 style of the game, it wouldn't be all that hard.
I should also mention, these unused visgroups contain a lot of extra pieces that aren't in portal prospekt. The old fizzler is a good example, as well as the actual shape and setup for the room where you get the portal gun. There was also this special elevator model called "combine_elevator" that prospekt doesn't really utilize, in spite of us having said model.
Hahaha yeah! I looked at your Portal post on DC and thought wait a minute... Im doing a Portal vid too, lol. Unfortunately, Prospekt was the only way I could show the Beta in a "presentable form". But who knows... maybe I'll one day make a Portal Beta vid, and showcase a more refined mod... made by you 👀
I really like the way Portal’s visual style turned out, but I love the concept of a more Half Life based version where you would essentially play HL2 backwards, going from Nova Prospekt after the end of Entanglement back through the coast, Ravenholm, and the canals to come back during the conception of the uprising

very interesting, I've been meaning to look more into portal history, and also what the creators of the original are doing today
Aperture actually existed in this version of the game, my guess is it was a pre war laboratory that was retrofitted into some sort of combine human testing. I find it extremely interesting how the room you wake up in is the best living conditions we ever see the combine provide. It implies you where valuable to the combine in some way.

Sure, I'll be looking into the cut content stuff for the game and make videos for them.
While the majority of the maps here are fan made, the maps in the "Project-Beta" mod are the recompiled maps/assets from December 2006. The mod acts like a snapshot build although I'm not sure how accurate it is. It was supposed to have replacement packs for portals/view models but I never finished it.
With the 2005 stuff (not my mod, but I did the lvl vmfs found from the Facepunch leak), the the battery puzzle map is legit, and the relaxation vault map was added on to from the vmf that was a background map.
