WOT's Map Design | Part 1, The Recon Rant

  • WG's new recon season was announced, and after looking at the maps, this is so unbelievably bad. I don't even have to play on these to know they're hulldown meta garbage with limited to no options for other tank types. I also subtly hint at the existence of chokepoints being a problem, but they aren't very present throughout all of the newer maps. I will get to them, do not worry.
    I haven't tried out Akshnskahknasnhakshna yet but it looks ok to me based purely on the minimap. Not every single recon map has been bad; Oyster Bay for example was insanely good, and well balanced. It was also accepted into further testing, so I'm assuming I'm not alone in thinking it was good. There will be a part 2 that is insanely more in-depth than this one, giving exact specific examples on maps, including recon ones. There was no script for this video, and part 2 already has 13+ pages of a script written, and there's more to add.

    Hello to everyone randomly getting recommended/shown this video in 2024. I'd like to point out that it is unscripted, and hardly edited. I'm way better at videos now lol.
    We all have growing pains though. Also Wargaming's map design only got worse, so...

      Working on two more parts. Unfortunately, my internet's been terrible for a few days, and the problem is not on our end. There's nothing we can do to make it better either, so that's fun.
      One part will be how the recon maps were designed, and another for how the maps in the live version can be fixed.

    In the hands of competent people WoT could truly be fantastic but that's not the world we live in, in reality WG is killing this game.

    Overall i think besides the obvious problems of artillery and wheeled tanks completely ruining the game, world of tanks hidden biggest weakness has always been it's map design.
    A blind monkey could paint it's 💩 on a canvas and it would most likely result in a better map. It feels like every map is designed to make you feel like someone put effort into designing it but they lack any real design thought.
    To me it seems like their maps have always been designed with aesthetic as the priority. No thought is given to; how will this map flow, how will tanks be useful on this map, where can they go.
    I think the biggest evidence for this is that on 99% of maps, there isn't really any actual good place for any tank to go that provide any useful action. Almost every map boils down to this. One half of the team goes left, the other half of the team goes right. Both sides engage in a peakaboo contest for 10 minutes and after a roll of the dice one team wins. There are 0 opportunities for flanking without getting nuked by a FV4005. The only time flanking happens is when one of the grindfest sides has already been won. In fact when i think of it, i can think if a single map that has any opportunity whatsoever to flank.
    Overall i can think of maybe 1 or 2 good maps in the entire game.

      One of the reason why some peopple love Onslaught is it gives you more options to flank.

      The map design team in WoT, apart from the ones making the art, is complete utter trash.
      Whoever is designing those maps, simply does not play the game nor has any clue how to design maps for any game at all, thats just demonstrable.
      But another reason why none of these maps are dynamic, or allowing for flanking or any kind of movement on the map, is because of the viewranges of everyone being massive.
      Half the map gets covered by spotting circles of tanks from the get go, so movement possibilities are immediately gonna be heavily restricted.
      Arty existing doesnt help either and turns maps into even more of a campfest then they already are.
      Cut the vision of mediums by 50%, lights -30%, heavies -60%
      And suddenly all these maps will be playing radically different without changing a thing about the maps themselves.

      The community would make better maps than the devs, I guarantee.
      If for no other reason than sheer volume.

    oh man imagine a map maker where u can also test the map with other players for fun in team training...but no wg just wants u to grind events and buy premiums 24/7

      These were a bunch of work-in-progress maps that wargaming were testing in a gamemode of their own. The most voted upon maps got added to the game.
      Unfortunately, wargaming didn't consider that we didn't want ANY of them in the game, because they were all terrible. So we still ended up with a few, and they're some of the most disliked maps in the game.
      Map changes also keep getting proposed for existing maps, which turns them more into maps that were being tested. Feedback on those changes has been overwhelmingly negative every single time. Most recently, Airfield.

    The only hull down tanks at top tier i have in my garage are the vz55 (i dont play often), 277 (ish, i play it with the meds, its more fun that way) and Sconq i play once in the while, mainly for the amazing gun. Took an almost 1 year break from the game bcz the game is not fun anymore, the tanks i like (Obj 268, E100, E75 etc) get outclassed on these new maps by new tanks, its just not fun to poke your non meta turret or casemate against something that has heat loaded and will pen u every time. Every single tank released recently is either invulnerable hull down either complete paper. I really do not understand how can so many ppl enjoy this brainrot experience. Wank in a hull down spot for 5 min, get rofl'ed or rofl the enemy team, get shit on by arta and eaten alive by shitcampers. Where is the fun in that?
