  • Does the Lord ever give instructions that seem counterintuitive? Dr. Matthew Bowen demonstrates that many throughout scripture have used the story of the Exodus in times of trial. He also teaches how the Lord keeps his promises and how Jehovah sometimes gives counterintuitive commands but never leaves his people alone.

Can I just say kudos to Hank for always having new ideas on how to introduce John, there should be a summary of it in John's biography! 👌😁

When you spoke of “a way”, “a path” through the Red Sea my mind jumped to the LostTen Tribes and “a highway cast up in the midst of the great deep”…I stopped to look it up in DC 138:26-32, and found a series of Exodus references…”their prophets shall hear HIs voice “, “they shall smite the rocks”, and then “shall ice (water) flow down”, and an highway (path) shall be cast up in the middle of the great deep,” “their enemies shall become a prey to them”, barren deserts shall come forth with pools of water”, (water from the rock) , “and they shall bring forth their treasures” (scriptures, but references gold Israel brought from Egypt, which made me think of gold plates of B of M, perhaps their records are written on gold plates as well),n “boundaries of the everlasting hills shall tremble, (earthquakes of Sinai, signifying presence of God) at their presence, and they shall bow down (be humble) and be crowned with glory (temple)…and then and additional reference came to mind, that the gathering of the ten tribes would be seen as an even greater miracle than Moses opening a path through the Red Sea….which would be true if their highway was prepared by (138:23-24) He shall command the great deep, and it shall a be driven back into the north countries , and the lands shall become one land. And the land of Jerusalem and the land of Zion shall a be turned back into a their own place, and the earth shall be like as it was in the years before it was divided.”….which are the verses preceding the a story of how the ten tribes will come from the lands of the north, cited above.

I think it was Elder Uchtdorf who spoke yesterday about moving forward! Some say great minds think alike but I can also see us becoming a Zion like people. 1 heart 1 mind.

Every week I say to myself "This has been my favorite episode!" You guys have really knocked it out of the park with great scholars and experts in the Old Testament. I really loved the insights into the Book of Mormon this episode as well, I'm always trying to find new connections with the BOM because I've reread it so many times and I don't want the messages to get stale. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The Iron Rod is Jesus Christ (The Word of God)
This was a nice throwback to the Book of Mormon where Nephi describes his heavenly vision. Unfortunately, we have often missed the imagery completely, assigning an image of a handrail to the Iron Rod. And we have missed the identity of the Iron Rod, assigning the Scriptures to that role, when it is actually the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
"And it came to pass that I beheld that the rod of iron, which my father had seen, was the word of God, which led to the fountain of living waters, or to the tree of life; which waters are a representation of the love of God; and I also beheld that the tree of life was a representation of the love of God." (1 Nephi 11:25)
So why is Jesus the Rod of Iron? Why is Jesus the Word of God?
"And John saw and bore record of the fulness of my glory... Therefore, in the beginning the Word was, for he was the Word, even the messenger of salvation" (D&C 93: 6, 8.)
And of course, this takes its cue from the first verse of John. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1)
If we were to simplify Nephi's vision, we would have a representation of the Temple Endowment.

Nephi sees the dark and dreary world. He wants to get to the Tree of Life which represents being in the presence of God. There is a mist of darkness, or a veil that separates the two. There is something that breaches the veil and conducts us through to the presence of God. And what is that? Jesus Christ Himself, who employs no servant at the veil (2 Nephi 9:41). Like the Rod of Iron that extends from the world, through the veil of darkness, to the Tree of Life, Jesus will extend his arm to us (Alma 29:10), and if we hold to the rod, we will be conducted to the presence of God, the Tree of Life.
The story of Ester is another example in scripture of someone grasping an iron rod and being conducted safely into the presence of the King.

Jesus Christ is the living, present, Word of God, and the scriptures enable us to come to know God’s Word-Jesus Christ-better, while we are seeking a more personal relationship with the Son. See D&C 93 and ponder deeply the five keys given in verse one, which enable us to have a direct and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Forsake sin and Come Unto Christ (learn more about him in the scriptures, but come to know Him personally), and Call on Christ’s name (pray to the Father in the name of the Son-we cannot approach God save it be through Jesus Christ), and obey Christ’s voice (What is the difference between the voice of Christ’s counsels versus his commandments?), and keep his commandments (these are not counsels, they are “go and do” commandments). Do these five things always, and in time you will come to see his face and know that he is. Study this whole section and it will give you the keys to overcoming all that you believe to be true that is false and all that is false that you believe (unbelief), and you will receive the fulness of the record of John, even Jesus Christ.

The scriptures are God's Word and everything you need is in the scriptures, the whole of God's word will mature you spiritually, no other book can do this! It also provides protection, Hebrews 4:12 For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of souls and spirit and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intent of the heart. To change these powerful Words of God leaves one without His protection and discernment. Anything removed or changed even a comma, can be destructive.

These are so fabulous- but can I request more women ? I’d love to hear from your wives, sisters, daughters. Who cares if they have a degree or speak Hebrew. We need more women in the church to speak up and speak out!

@@hollydransfield1653 But I like the Hebrew stuff on this podcast--it's my favorite part! Actually, I studied Hebrew at BYU for several years, and both my professors were women--maybe they should invite them to the podcast! (Shoutout to Geri Clements and Monica Richards!) I think they've already invited a large percentage of the female BYU religion faculty on the podcast already, they might need to cast their net out wider to get more female voices. But this show is where people go to help plan their Gospel Doctrine lessons, and I think that having experts on is important, regardless of gender. You might like the "Latter-day Saint Women Podcast" that's done by the Church. They invite women of varying levels of education to share messages and they have excellent things to say.

They've had Ahmad Corbitt on, who is a lawyer and serves in the YM general presidency. However I don't think using the Savior's lack of formal earthly education is an appropriate measurement - for multiple reasons. I appreciate the scholarly focus being taken. It minimizes the dissemination of erroneous opinions.
