Ok, I just played this hack blind and... wow.
It's _so_ well designed! Everything seemed to fit like a dream! Only the first area has a map, but all others are very tightly designed, and they loop on themselves, so I never got lost, and it never got tedious either!
Every secret is very well telegraphed as well, I mean, I only missed two baseballs on my first playthrough! There's no "regular block disguised as a breakable block" bullshit, and every trick and trap is easily decipherable and traversable, and I even noticed some nifty tricks with one-way gates.
There are also multiple ways to get somewhere I feel, be it through the main paths or some secret shortcuts, it was always a fun time exploring the areas. I especially loved finding the cute characters near every heart container!
Also, a save system, and health and ammo restorers, THANK YOU! That alone would be enough to make the OG Metroid so much more palatable. In fact, regardless of these technical improvements, I'd say this game is a better metroidvania than the OG Metroid.
Some special mention has to go to the Heart, the Labyrinth and Sheol, they had some nifty tricks on them:
    - the Heart was designed like Norfair from Metroid Planets' Novus campaign: a tower with stairwell paths on the sides that lead downwards, until you get the wave beam power up that lets you go up and down easily!
    - the Labyrinth threw me for a loop, as not only it made Junko... naked, it also obscured my health and ammo! It was probably designed to put both me and Junko in an uncomfortable position, very clever!
    - Sheol's way of using the barriers and looping around after you manage to break all of them is both genius and a great time saver!
I'm also noticing some differences between the current version (the one I played) and the one in this playthrough... some of the Heart Container characters are missing, some rooms have some different details, not sure if that secret sauna in the Trench is still there, and the structure of the Heart was also completely different, none of the gimmicks I found in the Labyrinth, which also had a ton of changes, most notably on the boss room... and generally speaking, it seems like the new version is more consistent on the looks of breakable tiles, at the very least in the Heart - very seldom do the breakable tiles look like a regular solid tile, while it seems more frequent in this version.
And I mean, do I even have to say anything about the graphical department? This game is beautiful! It's visceral! It's uneasy and gore-y at times, but all in a very impressive way, reusing some of Metroid's assets for some really cool looks!
On the Surface, you start on your bed, in the middle of a snowy forest. Putting you on a personal object of comfort, in a very discomforting and cold place, forcing you to leave your little safe haven, not gonna lie, I imagined some situations similar to those myself. A really nice blend of the cold outdoors and the damp caverns, one of the areas even having a hole on the ceiling of a cave, letting the snow in... it already goes beyond what most NES games of back then did.
Also, on a side note, the saunas, where you restore your health, made me feel a mix of comfort, and being weirded out. In some, it feels fully relaxing... in others, you realize you're chilling in a hot spring full of dirty water, or blood. It's funny, honestly.
The Trench basically felt like the dampest area in the game, as an underwater base should be! Many pipes in the middle of water tanks, broken glass tunnels that can't lead anywhere anymore... Details like spinning ventilation fans, and water dripping from the ceiling were some of my favorites. My recommendation for first time players is to get here first to find some baseballs and the Pink Dress, and then buzz off back to the Outside to tackle the other areas, unless you're all stocked up and feel ready to take kn the boss, who if I'm not mistaken, is Ridley reskinned as a Penguin. Quaint!
The Heart is an interesting remix of Norfair, with a mechanical tower surrounded by dripping blood cells! It's designed in a way that keeps it interesting, with a twist here and there to keep it all fresh! I wonder if it's meant to represent a needle penetrating deep into the flesh or so. Then again, I'm not sure it the Trench was meant to represent anything, so yeah.
The Labyrinth, like I said, was probably designed to make you feel uncomfortable, its laboratory aesthetic with incubated fetuses making you feel like a literal lab rat on the run, scared and trapped.
Sheol is also a really interesting area... and depending on your mindset, the creepiest. Make of that statement what you will. It's got tons of skulls and flesh around, tentacles, eyes, grabby hands... yeah, many sides of the "creep factor". A very memorable area, that's for sure.
All in all, a very memorable and enjoyable game! And after looking at Super Junkroid, I can definitely see it becoming its own thing one day!

I think this ROM hack is the maker trying to tell us that they were surprise snuggled by a penguin.

I'd say Labyrinth and Sheol are very telling of, uh, certain things.

This hack definitely needs a Hard Mode of some kind. Enemies do too little damage & lava & such takes health away far too slowly to even be a threat. It's significantly easier than the 1st game, too much so imo.

The songs are so long.... I wish there was a flag to not restart the track every time you pick up an upgrade. That would be a nice thing to fix in the next version of the patch.

Surely I can't be the only one SUPER annoyed by the music resetting every single time you pick up an item. The tunes are so long & get better as they go. Am really surprised the Dev didn't notice this & didn't fix it...
