  • U.S. Army Pvt. Travis King, who crossed the border from South Korea to North Korea in July, is back in U.S. custody after being deported by North Korea Wednesday. A senior U.S. official said King is in good spirits and has already spoken with his mother. King had fled into North Korea on the same day he was supposed to return to the U.S. to face military discipline for an assault conviction. Elizabeth Palmer has more.

The fact that he was given back to the US without us needing to give them anything means he was a useless bargaining chip.
Edit: Man, I was even thinking about the Chappelle bit. Holy sh!t, that's funny. I was coming from the fact that they had their hands on a US Soldier that defected, and they just gave him back.

My speculation... North Korea basically had two choices: 1) Hold onto him as an accused spy in hopes to gain concessions for his release. 2) Raise him up as a hero within North Korea using him as proof of how evil the West is while also gaining military insider knowledge.
The first option was nearly dead on arrival as the world media portrayed Travis as a criminal on the run, and social media citing the well-earned karma Travis was about to receive in a North Korean prison. Virtually no one was going to be heartbroken if he wasn't released.
The second option was possibly more realistic, given Travis was genuinely seeking asylum and was claiming to be a victim of oppression by the West. However, when you consider that all the crimes Travis is guilty of are primarily the result of poor impulse control, this means he was more of a liability than an asset when it came to local politics. This probably took a little longer to figure out, but in the end they concluded he was just dead-weight.
So in a choice between spending money to make him disappear in their prison system, or giving him back to the West who also intended to imprison him, the choice was pretty obvious to return him without conditions.
