I like thinking about how the story will be so incredibly to watch finish, and how hype it will be to watch all my friends with the movie in a year or two. I think part of why it structurally hit weirdly to me is kinda what you touched on about degrees of cliffhangers, i.e. just a little tease at the end instead of cutting before any resolution. But part of it kinda comes from how we as an audience have been primed by hollywood. We are so used to heros journeys and three act structures, and this movie mostly fits that. we get the problem being introduced, the change to the status quo, the teams splitting up and heros lowest moment... then credits. It didn't feel like it ended after the mid-peak like some split movies do, it feels like it ended right before the climax, with like 20% cut. Part of it is an audience expectation problem, especially since they didn't include 'part 1' in the title. Apparently if people followed the press releases they'd know but most people didn't. It was a very satisfying slow build though, and when its watched all together as a trilogy in the future it'll be great. I love slower stories which is why I generally prefer TV shows to movies, more character investment. At least the movie was engaging enough to make people feel a strong genuine emotion, even if if was mostly anger, better than apathy like a lot of superhero movies give.

  • @devzeppelin
    @devzeppelin 7 дней назад +6

    You explained exactly why this film felt so incomplete: the 2 hours spent introducing plot points without resolving most of them. A good cliffhanger to a film is when that story still works as a standalone, opposed to relying on the next to completely finish it. Basically, “I wonder what could happen next” vs “wait, that’s it??”.

    • @JFTArchive
      @JFTArchive 6 дней назад +3

      The thing about that is that this movie isn't meant to be a standalone, it was written to be a two parter. Across was supposed come out this year and wrap up the plot threads this movie set up.

    • @DarthTingleBinks
      @DarthTingleBinks 5 дней назад +2

      I'd argue that, "Wait, that's it?" is a better thing to think. Instead of being satisfied with what you have and being interested in what, if anything, is to come, now you are desperately waiting to see the resolution. You're conditioned to NEED more. It builds more hype and will probably sell more tickets. Because let's be honest, the only reason you're disappointed is because everything was so good and you didn't get to see how it wrapped up.

    In the past five to ten years binging content has gotten so much more popular and episodes are now closer to an hour. Everything is built to be less episodic since writers have to account for how viewing styles have changed. Watching a series is more like watching a movie that lasts 12-24 hours. Movies used to be seen as the place to really flush out a story and tell it uninterrupted. Now, I feel more and more that they're more constricting in terms of story immersion than most tv series. I can help but think that a lot of stories (arcane, invincible) might have had similar issues had they not been in a series format. In the end Im happy to tell myself that they're taking the time they need to tell the story well. Rather than trying to pacify us they just said okay now you wait. Work.

    Am I the only one who genuinely was satisfied with the cliffhanger??? Honestly... It wasn't _that_ big a deal. The movie was just so good that I didn't care. And it being a cliffhanger just means that we'll get even more movie when the next part comes out. It doesn't bother me because most of the movie's character arcs have already been resolved by the end of the movie (more specifically, Gwen's arc).
    The movie started with Gwen being unsure, and not being able to communicate with her dad. By the end of the movie she is able to recompense with him and come to terms with everything. Her dad even quit his job as police captain, proving that Mile's was right... Gwen's dad inadvertently avoided the supposed "canon event" because he's no longer a police captain, proving that canon events can be avoided safely without destroying the universe... Which perfectly sets up for the second part, which I assume will be more focused on stopping The Spot and the conflict with Miguel, as well as The Prowler from Earth 42.
    This movie really felt like Gwen's movie, while the next half will be more about Miles I think.

    I'm going to have to disagree with almost everything you said about Across the Spider-verse. I loved the ending and I don't think I've ever left a film so happy. I think the fact that the end of this film feels like the beginning of another is what makes it better.

    The part about hidden identities really hit home. I’m at a bit of a crossroads in my life right now. Finished high school and had a university course picked out, but that course didn’t suit me. Besides, I could really connect with people and fit in. I’m not one to approach others and that led to a lot of self-isolating. It led to a search of what *does* suit me. And now I have picked out a new university study. But I’m anxious, because I feel like it won’t suit me this time either. And I have this creative, artistic side to me that I admire about myself. But others, even those closest to me, really don’t know how integral that is in my identity. They can’t know; partially because I’m afraid to let them, but also because it’d probably be too vast to grasp. I want to write stories and compose music but I hold myself back, probably out of a fear of being judged. Even though these parts of me have been there since I was little. This is my big hidden identity. And I feel like I should unleash it. I feel like I should not look towards going to uni, but rather develop my writing skills. And yet it’s kind of a societal expectation to go to university if you’re smart enough for it. But I’m very sceptical as to whether that would suit me. I don’t think it will. I feel like there’s so much I hide away. Like a Spider-person hides away one of their identities from either the public, or those closest to them. I feel like I still need to find a place where I truly belong, like the spider-people within the spider society. Someplace to be my unveiled self.

    I think the reason this was going to be two parts was because almost every Phil Lord and Chris Millar Project ends after two entries or on a cliffhanger either a gag or unresolved never to be picked back up on. They want this be their first full complete trilogy. Which why this became going to be two movies, basically making one big movie split into two parts. But the third one became so big they made it a separate movie. Thus making it this a trilogy. But with the rather notorious production of Across the Spider-Verse and the looming animation strikes. I wouldn't be surprised if BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE never gets made

    I think this was an amazing set up for the last film. We all thought he made it back home to save his parents, but then he was in the wrong universe, so it was a good plot twist. And I’m sure the final film will be amazing but also very bittersweet because I know one or more of the spider people will die, and I have a spider sense that it might be Gwen, who maybe saves Mile’s dad instead of himself and she is his canon.

    I particularly hated how they undercut and jokified classic and fan favourite alternates in order to artificially prop up the post-modern alternates that no fan in their right man cares about. Too many shows and movies these days make us wait way too long to see how stories we care about continue or resolve. If it’s gonna be multiple years until the next installment, we really should have more satisfying conclusions.

    I do love this movie, it tells an incredible story that's so well layered. But it really does sour the experience for me the way it ends. There are ways to do cliffhangers that are still satisfying as their own movie, their own story, Mission Impossible from last year is an example and Empire Strikes Back is another as you showed briefly. Both of those are very much part of the series and set up the next one, ending with some strings still hanging but they still worked as their own movie, they have their own conclusion whereas Across the Spiderverse ends mid scene, there is no conclusion to this chapter. They split this and Beyond into two, which is clearly needed, but didn't change anything after the split, it feels like they had both movies and just cut the first half and named it Across

    There’s also definitely something interesting about the whole variety angle you bring up, because fundamentally- Miguel is the most different spider person there. No connection to any people related to Peter, no spider bite, and has been directly stated to purposely be the polar opposite of Peter by the directors. So it’s interesting they chose someone like Miguel, THE anti authoritarian Spider-Man before Hobie, and who is such a wildly different interpretation of Spider-Man to fill the position he’s in. It makes me wonder if most of the stuff Miguel said to miles on the train was projection, seeing someone who’s a mirror of yourself when it comes to being different and getting reminded of who you used to be by their optimism. Slight disagree on your point in regards to the canon though. Miguel states what’s happened to Pav’s universe has happened multiple times before, with them not being able to save the dimension every time, so it’s not like it’s a two time coincidence. Something is definitely going on that we need to solve, but the issue is that Miguel is going about it the wrong way. Tbh ATSV is the definition of a lose-lose situation for every character in the story, cause it’s not like any of them want to be in their current conflict, they’re just getting pushed against each other when if anything they should be rallying with one another.
