Is marbling on canvas different / require different materials or paints when compared to marbling on paper? thank you!

What do you treat the canvas with please?

canvas panels or stretched canvas that you buy in an art store, or in the dollar store are already treated with gesso. He said treated with alum but in the US we call it gesso. He didnt have to do anything because it came pre-treated.
