Landscape Photography and My Wild Ride on Orkney

- In this landscape photography video I finally achieve one of my goals and finally get to Orkney, which is located off the northern tip of Scotland. From the moment my feet hit the shore, my wild ride begins and I am greeted by sunshine, gale force winds, horizontal rain and a rainbow, all on the first morning.

Stunning images. Imagine living in those isolated cottages and experiencing that every day.
I'd love to have that in my life but I would miss the trees!
There's a good spirit in Ewan, it seems to me. At the end of the video you refer to, he wonders if the long sunset he sees in the plane trip might be a message from beyond Orkney saying you cant give up..... In the meantime the words in the song suggest a certain peace about being in the arms of an angel. Its the kind of peace the world cant offer because its not the worlds to give and so on Monday morning we all have to go back to work again. The spirit that allows him to express his loss is the same spirit that allows him to make great images. Its a good spirit. St. Augustine once asked nature Are you it? And nature answered, Oh no, look to the spirit who made us.
Interesting to hear your thoughts on the filmTony. It gave me lots to think about.
My wife and I did a one day guided tour of the Orkney's, from one day we promised to go back for a longer stay. Excellent video as always, thank you for sharing...
Definitely one day isn't enough. I had six days and barely scratched the surface photographically.
Just stunning! 🌟🌟🌟
Watched this lying in bed with a shocking headache. Such a lovely distraction and stunning, stunning photographs. Huge thanks
Oh no. New one out tomorrow so I hope another headache is on the cards?
The joy you take from photography is clearly evident in this video. You are smiling from ear to ear from beginning to end. Stellar content as always. Nice to see you having so much fun creating it. Looking forward to part two.
Thanks Brett. I did enjoy the trip. It's always nice to go somewhere new and in the case of Orkney, it was truly exhilarating.
Excellent video and stunning images made in difficult conditions. If your wife is sharing the van with you on this trip she deserves a medal. 👍
I told her what you said Richard. She did have much of the say in where we parked. Clifftops were off the menu!!
I retired to Orkney 4 years ago to photograph it. The light is fantastic and dramatic. You can walk along the cliff top from Birsay car park to Northside every day and the views will be different. If the weather is fine in October you should be able to photograph the aurora from Birsay. Some of my best photographs were taken in January. Remember there is no such thing as the wrong weather but there is such thing as the wrong clothes. Thank you for coming here. Come back again.
Cheers Ed. I can see why you would move there. I fear that I would miss trees though!
Hey Simon. Thanks for the plug buddy. = ) Loved the video and you looked truly happy to be there, despite the weather you faced... which is quite normal up there for that time of the year.
Loved the shots you got and as you say... amazing light! You... me... next year....Orkney workshop!!
Looking forward to part 2, to see what you get up to! Speak soon.
Ewan
I would really like that Ewan. I can't imagine not going back if I'm honest. Be nice to experience the place alongside someone who knows it as well as you. I felt like a fish out of water at times.
The last image is portfolio worthy for sure.
Thank you David. Glad you liked it.
The drama is next level and changes in an instant. Thoroughly enjoyed that adventure Simon.
Cheers Ian. Tomorrow's film is equally crazy where the weather is concerned.
The last shot at sunrise was absolutely wonderful and you presented it with the light touch it needed. Great work!
Thanks Larry. I'm not a fan of over processing. When you shoot accompanying videos as I do, you can't really get away with it. That being said, the eye witness approach has always been my preference. .
Thanks for sharing Simon, I do remember Ewan's video and yes it was very emotional,a talented photographer indeed as are you.Fantastic image at the end of the video,Orkney will be on my to do list next time I get home. Thanks again for sharing.
Cheers for the kind words John. There is absolutely nothing to not love about Orkney
Stunning place ! Stunning photography !
Beautiful images. Especially the last one, some crops of that photo are worth a photo in themselves. Beautyful landscape over there.
It truly is stunning Wim
Wonderful shots, and by the look on your face a good time was had by all. Man oh man....what a place. Looking forward to part2
Cheers Ted. Part 2 is out tomorrow and more good times for sure. Crazy weather!
I love to see you in your element. Or should that be the elements! Great photos as ever. Wonderful atmosphere. Can't wait for the sequel.
Part 2 tomorrow David. Cheers for watching again.
What a stunning location. A friend of mine has visited the majority of the Scottish Islands and Orkney is his favourite. Great images once again Simon
I can see why. It's very much photographer free too at the moment. I hope I haven't changed that too much :-)
All the reasons I LOVE Orkney are here! I knew it would bring back memories of my time on the Island and you didn't fail. There are no superlatives to describe how Orkney makes you feel, it is beyond description. You really can't take a bad photo on Orkney - but yours are sublime. They capture the essence of the mood and magnificence of the landscape. Thank you Simon and I am very much looking forward to part two.
Thanks Jill. The new one is out tomorrow and I hope it meets your expectations. I feel under pressure now :-)
Love the results at about 13:15 🙂 not only beautiful light on the rock around 25 min mark, but reflected in the water too.... and we can see that at the 29 min mark photo
I did get blessed with good light. There's certainly more of it on Orkney than where I live in Lancashire.
We visited Orkney a few years ago so this is a great reminder of what we saw. My main memories are of very strong winds (at Skara Brae could hardly stand up; and of missing trees!
It's a wild place, that's for sure, but I wouldn't have changed a thing.
Simon, you captures several beautiful shots. Well done!
Thanks a bunch Jim. Much appreciated.
A wild place weather wise. Goodness. You did well getting any sort of images from there. Well done Simon. I did enjoy the colour in the last one, and the texture on the rocks is quite remarkable.
The geology is something else Denise. I could spend months there and never get bored.
Excellent professor Booth! Love this video. Thank you.
Looking forward to next week's. All the best!
Thanks Jorge. It's out tomorrow. Thanks for watching.
Morning, Simon. I’m looking forward to this.
Hope you enjoyed it Harry
Simon, I 3njoy everything you do. I look forward to each new video. Thank you.
Nicely done! Thanks for the excellent, photographer's-eye tour of this great location, and the super shots.
Many thanks Neil. You are welcome.
Just wonderful!
Some beautiful locations Simon and you captured them beautifully
Thanks George.
A very nice couple of images Simon, i'm looking forward to the next episode. I also love the way you credited Ewan Dunsmuir"s VLOG from Orkney! Ewan is a wonderful landscape photographer and I've been following his work for a number of years. He's been very quiet this year, I'm hoping he will do more VLOGS in 2023. I love his style of presentation and images. I always learn something new from you and Ewan. On opposite sides of the planet, but clearly connected. Cheers from Sydney Australia.
Yes Ewan needs to get his finger out. He's been doing a house up and breaking bones falling off ladders, but I'm sure he will be back soon. My new film is out in the morning.
@@SimonBoothPhotography Bluntly put Simon! Yes I did know Ewan had fractured his arm and working on a house renovation- that will definitely slow your photography down :(
A couple of gorgeous shots Simon. Well worth the effort.
Thanks Alan
been so looking forward to this video and I’ve watched Ewan’s video a Few times just a brilliant photographer
I hope he reads these comments.
I feel I need to do the same planning and arrangements to head to Orkney. Your emotions and joy was clear to see, each image beautiful and my kinda coastline! Ewan’s video a poignant reminder of holding memories close and make the most of our time. Really enjoyed Simon and looking forward to this as a series.
Cheers Mali. I feel you are long overdue a trip to Scotland.
That wasn't 30 minutes long I must keep an eye on the time next view!
Had ha laugh when you mentioned the rain not coming down 🤣 A lifetime here and I have to giggle when people say take an umbrella.
Looks like you had a good time and hopefully this will inspire Ewan to get another video out 🙂
Eagerly awaiting part 2 now!👍
Cheers Andrew. I sincerely hope tomorrow's video meets you expectations. The next one is just as crazy, if not more. I love this place. I also wish Ewan would pull his socks up. He's been missed.
@@SimonBoothPhotography the last 3 days have been stormier than when you were there, no Gills ferry but I sat on the cliffs at Duncansby all 3 days. Been awesome. I'm sure I'll enjoy pt2
Love the last picture. Not seeing any sun bathers though.
Great video Simon. Pics are tremendous and Orkney looks like a great choice for visiting.
Good to hear from you again Calum. Orkney is right up your street. You would love it there.
loved the last shot Simon - epic adventure by the looks,,,👍
It really was John. The sea has such drama in it. We had a great week for rough weather and big waves.
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience(s) with us!
Cheers Darren
Lovely images Simon and really enjoyable video. Well done
Thanks Glyn
" Madness ?! THIS. IS. ORCKNEEYYY !!! *kicks the tripod into the sea*.... '300' anyone? No? Ok...
Marvelous location Simon, the last shot in particular does it for me. Wave photography is tons of fun, you always end up with about thirty to choose from and it's hard to pick The one.
This was exactly the dilemma that I had.
Just breathtaking!
Thanks Frank
Lovley video Simon , top images as well . Hoping to get to Orkney in the next year or two , my wife’s ancestors are Twatt’s ! From the place of the same name , unsurprisingly this was changed to Watt when they moved south . Very interested to see the rest of your trip and enjoyed Ewan’s video thanks for sharing the info
😂😂😂😂 brilliant
Wow, so much drama looks great Simon!
Tomorrow's film is a similar story Neil.
Beatiful images Simon and love to see the adventure of taking it!
Thanks Wim. A similar experience in tomorrow's film.
So beautiful, so wild. Lately I’ve been reading the poetry of Orcadian writer George Mackay Brown. Between his poetry and this video, I really can’t wait to visit Orkney someday. I’ll tide myself over by going to watch Ewan’s video now.
I wish I was more into reading John. I feel I'm missing so much to be honest. Hope you enjoyed Ewan's film?
@@SimonBoothPhotography It was a beautiful and moving film. I’m so glad you brought it to my attention.
For most of my 44 years I’ve been a reader and a writer. I was so caught up in writing and books that I had a well-deserved reputation for being oblivious to what was going on around me. Then three years ago, at the start of the pandemic, I discovered photography. Photography is helping me to discover the world that was always around me. (I think this is partly why I’m so drawn to your channel, with its theme of “learning to see.”) I’m reading less now than I used to, but I’m curious to see how my photography, reading, and writing will shape one another.
Thanks again for your exceptional work, Simon, and for helping all your viewers “learn to see.”
Looks like you had a great time thanks for sharing.👍
I did Mike thanks
Outstanding images Simon - really enjoyed that video.
Thank you. New one out tomorrow from the same area.
Hello Simon
Many thanks for taking us with you on wilde Ride on Orkney. I can realy feel your joy being threre and share your great images with us :-).
With greetings from lower Bavaria
Thanks for the kind words and I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the film. Bavaria sounds a lovely place to visit too.
@@SimonBoothPhotography Yes it is and Orkney, too :-).
Hi Simon ! Beautiful photos !!!
Thank you.
Another great video Simon. #thumbsup Stay safe.
Thanks, you too Andi.
Beautifully
Thank you
Wow fantastic pictures i have been going to Orkney islands since I was a young lad I go on holiday here every year to visit my auntie that lives there it's a beautiful place and my goal in life is to move up there. Thanks for the video
It truly is a beautiful place Chris. I always ponder this question when I go somewhere new but I have to say, I need trees in my life and lots of them.
The drama in the conditions have been caught beautifully Simon. Thanks for taking us along on the trip.
You are most welcome Stuart.
Excellent video Simon! It looks like a fantastic place to photograph and spend some time, and you got some really beautiful images :-).
Thanks Steffen. There's a lifetime of opportunity there.
Cracking images!
Beautiful image of Marwick Head from Birsay, have stood on the exact same piece of rock myself Simon but not with such dramatic conditions. Look forward to more and will check out Ewan’s page 👍 Orkney is so dramatic in the Winter months, a photographic heaven if you can stand the conditions 🌊🌈🌧💨
Thanks Garry. It can be a test of one's endurance that's for sure. I love those conditions. I feel more alive than ever.
Super shots Simon, how wonderful to be in a place where you can see Mother Nature at her best and able to capture it as an image. Jealous is the word 👍🤠
It was a fabulous experience Mark. Sometimes a little scary in the van but I love that about the weather. The harshness really suits the place. What it lacks in high mountains it sure makes up for in character.
That sunrise image is stunning. Thank you for taking us along.
Thanks so much.
Stunning Simon thanks for the joy this has given me.
That's very kind of you to say Mark, thank you.
What a stunning place. Beautiful images, Simon.
Thanks again for tuning in kerry.
Beautiful images Simon and such an amazing dramatic location. Can't wait for part two.
Thanks Peter. Part two out tomorrow and it's just as crazy.
Lovely images Simon 😊👍
Cheers Bri. Thanks for tuning in 👍
What a beautiful place, Stunning pictures ❤️
You would really love it xx
Great content as always Simon.
Superb images, the light in the sunrise shot was sublime 🖤
Thanks Matt.
Magnificent locations.
Always nice to go out and be alone with nature and the elements.
Excellent images of sea and sky.
Love it!
Thanks Hans
Well done, beautiful 🍻
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video. I also had the same feeling from that same video of Ewan’s.
Brilliant wasn't it!
Another wonderful view of the natural world through your eyes - thank you Simon! Whenever I see a video such as yours from places like Orkney I develop a great admiration of the hardy people who live there.
I was chatting to a local lady in a shop who said the weather was shocking. What can I say. The romantic idea is shattered.
brilliant as always I am starting to plan another trip up there for next year It really is a stunning place
There is so much opportunity, it's herd to decide what to do for the best.
Brilliant video Simon, loved it. Like you, I found and got to know Ewan through the same video, and was similarly moved by his story and his photography. I have binge watched his videos time and time again. He is by far my favorite photographer. Thanks for sharing. Love your work m8. Stunning images too!
Damn it, i'm not your favourite 😂. Fair enough, I concede defeat!
That last shot make's me feel blown away 😏Sorry ! Seriously your enthusiasm , dedication and the enjoyment you obviously get is an inspiration to us all.
Brilliant image.
That's a nice compliment Alwyn, thank you. I did enjoy the trip.
Beautiful and stunning images Simon. The location looks breathtaking to say the least, hope you enjoy every minute there. I found Ewan's film lovely and emotional like you say. Stay safe on rainbow Island. 📷
Thanks Dave. Hope you enjoy tomorrow's instalment.
Great tribute to the place, and what success you had with the composition and light! Nice pace as usual. I was a little worried with those high waves, but there in lies the magic…
Those waves were far more intimidating than they looked to be honest. I had similar conditions on the video tomorrow. You really do have to have your whits about you.
Oh boy that last image....
Thank you 😊
Ah the race against the rain. Which photographer doesn't enjoy that 😄 Loved the 2nd shot the rock detail was amazing. Looking forward to the continuation
Cheers Sean. The rock is pretty amazing. I've never come across anything like it before.
Great video Simon, Ewan is an incredibly talented photographer and a good man to boot. I too watched Ewan's video when he posted it and yes it's an emotional watch and for the same reason as you Orkney is on my to do visit list. I can't visit yet for personal reasons but I'll get there .
Thanks Tony for your comment. Ewan needs to post soon eh!
@@SimonBoothPhotography Yes, I was thinking that a few weeks ago when I watched some of his back catalogue
wow - what fantastic light and conditions. you must have been giddy with excitement?!
the geology looks similar to that on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and at Mumbles, with that stone pavement and those fingers of rock pointing out to the horizon
The light was second to none that I have ever experienced. There's no such thing in my experience on Orkney as a bad day. It changes in the blink of an eye. I do wish I was better educated on geology though!
Great video Simon. I love Ewan's photography as well. This time of year is great down here in Cornwall especially now it's quiet. Have been to Orkney, lovely place to visit. Wild Autumn conditions are so exhilarating.
I must visit Cornwall in the winter. I've only been in the summer but it was far too busy for me.
@@SimonBoothPhotographyI agree it is too busy in summer. For photography November to February is best for wild weather and great light. Some fantastic rainbows this week. Met Nigel Danson, Mads Iverson and James Popsys a few days ago so they should have some videos coming soon to show you what its been like. Thanks again for your videos.
Hi Simon, I live in rural New South Wales, Australia and one of the adventures I will cherish till the end of my days was my stay on the Orkney's in 2008. I went there for the ancient history and not the photography but soon wished I'd have brought my gear with me. Such an atmospheric place, history, moody light and wonderful landscapes.
It certainly is a bit of a trip back for you Tom. Still, at least you have been and experienced it. Even for me it's along way.
Your best video for a long while, these are the ones I like, it’s the original Simon style. Orkney looks stunning, I can hear Private Frazer “it was a wild and lonely place” 😂, great stuff Simon and thank you. Oh, and two lovely photos by the way, the sun rise one being my favourite.
Thanks for the comment. I see what you are saying and I wish I could visit these locations more often but I have to work local most of the time. I feel like I have exhausted the big vistas locally.
Great pictures Simon. I am off to Harris on Friday for 2 weeks. I just hope I get similar conditions.
Hope your trip has been a success Ray. Cheers for watching.
@@SimonBoothPhotography So far so good Simon.
Haven't watched the video yet (tonight's viewing) but on first glance I thought the video title read: "My Wild Ride on a Donkey" 🤣🤣🤣
That gave me a great belly laugh David 😂😂😂
@@SimonBoothPhotography glad to be of service, no charge for you Simon 😂
@@davidellinsworth22 😂👍
Weather good or bad you got some great shots there Simon.
Thanks Iain. The weather was perfect and I wouldn't have changed a thing. I went in October because I wanted to see it for all it's wild beauty. and what it could throw at me. The next video is no different in that regard.
@@SimonBoothPhotography I look forward to it.
Lovely images, very wild on Orkney. Do you happen to have a link to Ewan's video?
It’s in the description below and also on the thumbnail at the end of this film.
Hi Simon, I just noticed something in the water immediately off the rock shelf in front of you @ ~24:30 - 25:00
I think it may be the head of a grey seal checking you out?
Oh yes, the minute my back was turned too and very close. Well spotted Alex. There were good numbers in that bay 👍
Tbh I prefer the image at 13m.19s over the sunrise one of the same composition at the end
I think I do to Rob now.
