Well now, this I wasn't expecting.
I love this because I love being read to ❤️
This is honestly crazy because I literally just finished re-reading this book myself a few days ago. I’m working on a story of my own that takes heavy inspiration from this tale, as well as from Clive Barker’s The Thief of Always (which is VERY similar to Coraline, and I recommend it to anyone who likes this formula of story.)
Coraline has been one of my favorites for a long time and I think the book carries important lessons (told in an easily understandable, matter-of-fact way) on what makes life meaningful, as well as more importantly, the true meaning of bravery, and I feel these things are invaluable for children to learn as they grow up.
Coraline’s lasting power and heroism as a character is frankly rooted in her “Everyman” status, being the kind of person any child can relate to. Everyone are literally supposed to be the most average person possible, so it’s safe to say that Coraline lives in all of us, reminding us of the strength we all have inside us (if we know where to look) and how we can all achieve great things with enough drive and determination. This was Neil Gaiman’s intention, wanting a “darker” version of an Alice-in-Wonderland-style protagonist who could be anyone, even any of us. For a bit of trivia to all you Ghibli fans, Hayao Miyazaki had the same intentions when he wrote Chihiro from Spirited Away.
We can honestly learn a lot from these characters. Bravery is often misidentified and misunderstood, so we need to keep these important stories close, and carry the lessons with us far into adulthood. As for Coraline, I plan on reading this book to my own kids one day.
Sorry for the impassioned speech, this book just means so much to me and I’m pleased to see it featured on your channel. We’re definitely like-minded. I look forward to the rest of this narration, and I hope everyone can get from the story what I did!
