      Not trying to be whatever, but the reason why the 338 didn't penetrated has many is because you used FMJ compared to the steel core from the 50

  • @richardjoyce848

    To be fair the 50bmg is an anti-material round, the 338 is designed for soft targets, it was never meant to punch through armour.

  • @iraadams7459
    @iraadams7459 5 лет назад +43

    The plates for the .50 were braced better. A lot of the .338s energy was absorbed by moving the stack. You might have gotten a hundred more if the stack hadn't moved so much.

      @A D Even so - the stack used for the 338 was loose enough for a lot of kinetic energy, and thus penetration, to be dissipated by the springiness of the stack.

    As a comparison, I would think it would be interesting to tape the entire stack of paper plates tightly together. I understand you are doing it to break it up into more manageable chunks to make it easier to find the bullets and count the plates, but I think you are losing a ton of ballistic energy at the junctions. I'd bet a shiny nickel that if they were all taped tightly together, you would get markedly different results. Just a suggestion :-) Love the videos! Keep up the good work! (and FYI, I have the IDENTICAL set up to your 338 and you are right, it is AWESOME!)

Thinking about things that would happen on a ranch or any decent amount of property. I know you love the 450 bushmaster and the 4570 but I'm sure those rounds have to be on the expensive side! I never thought the .338 Lapua Magnum would look like a small cartridge. I guess .50bmg will have that effect!

    You should of shot the .50 bmg right then because the plates looked a little different and they were placed different.

    I have the same type of savage 110 ba stealth. What type of 338 lapua ammo do you shoot? What type did you use hunting in Montana?

      For target cheapest I can find. I got my deer in Montana with hornady precision hunter

      WHO_TEE_WHO Thank you for the quick reply. I am going to start reloading my 338 lapua to help cut the costs.

    Obviously projectile design is huge. Having the mushroomed lead of the Lapua is great for doing damage but not so much for paper plate penetration. The steel core indestructible projectile of the 50 BMG would certainly penetrate buku paper plates and the frangible exterior contribute to destruction.
    Long-range hit on a soft target, the Lapua wins every time. With a harder target, the 50 BMG is obviously King. Have a great day Whoots!

    Had you used Monolithic bullets in the .338 LM ammo, it would have gone farther. It looks like you used a standard Cup, and Core Jacketed Bullet. Try this again, with some solid copper Bullets, and see what a difference they will make. Barne's, and Lehigh Defense make them, as components, and loaded ammo. The 50BMG will have a Steel Core, even if it's not A.P. So the Jacket will peel off, but the core will continue.

    I have both 338 and 50. The 338 is a savage 110ba. Man that thing has sweet trigger. My 50 is the bushmaster ba. The 338 is no match for the 50bmg but it is nothing to sneeze at.

    The .50 had a solid steel core and had its jacket removed while the .338 was pure lead and much softer which led to much less penetratrion so it wasn't a fair test

    • @matthewwolfe7962
      @matthewwolfe7962 5 лет назад

      That's why you thought the 50 BMG looked smaller and it was from the copper jacket being torn off

  • @rogerbartels5223

    OF COURSE the steel core bullet will penetrate much further than the soft lead bullet. As stated in other comments, the plates were not equally braced and stabilized. This was not a very good comparison. A solid .338 copper match bullet would have been a much better comparison, if the plates were also equally stabilized.

  • @mcguireskaratetheartofsurv1942
    @mcguireskaratetheartofsurv1942 4 года назад

    When shooting the lapua brace the plates so the plates don't take the energy and fall off the table !
    The 50 had a brace in the front and the back
    Lock the plates in like you did for the 50 i think you could go through approx 1,300 plates
    Thank you

    The expansion stopped the .338 short, but yeah the giant would win, my reloading budget would appreciate the .338 though...🤷🏾‍♂️

    I don`t know what dry ice costs but ill recommend it to anyone and everyone to shoot it at least once and see how amazing it looks, it explodes into a big ball of white vapour, the bigger the block you have the bigger the gun should be
