    I went from driving a Frieghtliner Sportchassis with a 6 speed Allison to a Pete 387 converted motorhome with an 18 speed Autoshift. Prior to my motorhome, I drove a 13 speed manual like twice and did a fairly decent job. The Autoshift made life simple behind the wheel. Like advertised, they literally cut down on the learning curve. It took me just a couple of hours to know everything as far as how it works.

    If you turn the Jake brake on, as soon as you let off the throttle, it'll start to downshift. Just like a full manual, you can only downshift within a certain rpm range, therefore when going down some hills, you gotta brake to slow down a little bit to get it to downshift to best utilize the Jake brake. The one thing i liked, was that it would never miss a gear. It always knew what gear to be in,...and mine was an 18 speed. If you go up a steep hill, it'll downshift to keep your rpms up too.

    awsome box.always had 18sp manual but had the auto for about a year and love it just as much. take off takes a bit of practice. starting in 3rd rev to normal changing rev and press to 4th wait a split second just before 4th engages press 5th keeping the gas pedal the same level.if the jake cuts in?, you presssed 5th too early, repeat untill up to 11. 12-18 just go up one. like i said takes practice. another tip in M when your in 18 and come up to a steep hill press L and it will launch you up.

    awesome ..... can't wait to drive it and for all the nay-Sayers i guess you still user paper maps and wonder if it is going to rain, and hope you don't get stuck in traffic, technology has me covered with all of these situations.

    Whether we like it or not, the technology is getting better/changing. Not being able to apply all you know with a manual transmission to the Ultra/Auto systems is only short changing yourself in the long run. How I do get the optimum performance should always be the start point: it takes just as much torque to go up a hill with a manual as an automatic, same gears, same engine speed, the feel of the road is still.the same, the only thing that changed is how do you transfer the power

    @WickedTRX 13 лет назад

    @punkngoth yes, that i know. What i've asked is if the gearbox control system has any control over the clutch. and if it's disengaged by it when a gear is changed, which i don't think it does. It just "rev matches" the input shaft speed with the output shaft speed in the time it is between gears.

    Shifting is a thing of the p[ast with the new trucks, The feel of the road is still the feel of the road with the Auto shift or trans, its an automated process, once youve driven an auto trans truck youll never want to go back to pulling gears, Fuel mileage is better and so is durability, and no clutches and bearings to replace....something new always faces criticism, but once youve gone auto you will love it, even in the mountains its far easier.

    • @garoshamirian
      @garoshamirian 5 лет назад

      You absolutely know nothing about the eaton autoshift ,you still have clutches to replace and they are more expensive maybe twice the amount for standard ,in eaton case you still have the same tranny,and some of those eatons actually have the clutch pedal so in traffic it is the same shit if not more difficult,I had a western star auto shift and I had to replace it with a standard 10 and very happy with it in traffic or not.

    Auto shifts are here to stay. I just started driving a Eaton Fuller advantage. It is a well engineered piece. It shifts excellent, has roll back protection, and doesn't need serviced for 500,000 miles and all that's needed is an oil change. It generates hardly no heat even on upgrades or downgrades. Yes backing can take some getting used to. But when driving you have one arm free. And the truck can stop quicker. No way am I going back to manual shift.

    • @stevenk6900
      @stevenk6900 Год назад

      yes, unfortunately, they are...for all those pro drivers that can`t drive standard! what a joke!!!

  • @burkewhb
    @burkewhb 12 лет назад

    @creamyfilling102 I don't look at the shifter because I drive an a ten speed automatic. I
    down shifted in school double-clutching a manual trans because that's all they had. I
    didn't think you could down-shift a manual trans without double-clutching. If you and others can do it, more power to you.

    This is a weird manual-auto hybrid (different even from a typical "manumatic"). Now the even newer ones have an automatic clutch so that it's really just like driving an automatic consumer vehicle now. (except that they still *sound* like manuals just like this one does, so they're not planetary like Allisons; weird).
    I would have more fun with manuals, though.

  • @newmanc6619

    Cars are going to be going that way too. BMW already has something like that I can drive in ms flight simulator.
    When in.manual mode, either downshift or switch to automatic before slowing down or stopping, or the engine will die.
    In BMW cars, you have to in neutral or the starter won't engage, so I would imagine it would be the same with Eaton autoshift trucks as well

  • @WickedTRX
    @WickedTRX 13 лет назад

    @larry40m The driver doesn't operate the clutch to shift. Only to Start and Stop Moving. The clutch isn't used in the shifting process. nor the driver nor the system use the clutch to shift, is always engaged.

    I know alot of old school truckies here in Oz that ( including myself ) don't like these new autos. How are up& coming drivers supposed to get the experience we all had & the feel for the road if a transmission does the thinking for them?!!!!

    Sooo, you clutch select direction then once moving its the same as an automatic??? do you have to let off the throttle for it to shift or can you just hold it to the wood ????

  • @HelloKittyFanMan.
    @HelloKittyFanMan. 12 лет назад

    Huh! Automatic transmission with manual clutch still! Haha, bit of an odd combo!
    Kind of reminds me of those manual transmissions coupled with a torque converter somehow, too. How does that work?
    Why no automatic clutch/torqe converter for this?

  • @WickedTRX

    I assume that the Eaton auto shift doesn't use the clutch to shift, instead it waits for the engine to slow down or applys engine brake to up shift, or revs the engine. sincronizing the input shaft with the output shatf in the next gear? will it skip gears when not loaded?

    • @val9499
      @val9499 6 лет назад

    Yeah! Why not just equip these trucks with an Allison transmission (such as in the trucks that are just as big in the video "Driving the Allison Automatic")?
    (I guess named "Allison" because they were made so that... Allison... could drive them! Girls/women named Allison, that is. Right? :D )

  • @DonLanierPearlProAudio

    Actually its just ther opposite, it makes driving safer and less distraction of shifting gear management etc, but then if you insist on going thru Atlanta and Chicago shifting a thousand times or more thats your choice....Ill be in Auto enjoying the seat covers.

    wow, this transmission is digusting. im 17 and im gonna be drivin rigs real soon. an 18 speed is the best, it just is. uve always got the safety of those low crawler gears and there are so many different options with 18 gears at your disposal. if u need an autoshift to drive a truck, mayb u shouldnt be behind the wheel.

    There are soo many things that are wrong with putting automatic shift transmissions in class 8 trucks! I will never have it in automatic mode, I will always choose manual select. I will always choose what gear, rpm,and when. They all think it's a nice friendly looking big car, it's not. The newer truck driver kid is gonna pick up some high center of gravity, paper roll load that almost touches the roof of the trailer, then thinking they are playing a video game, not plan how to approach and follow through a hairpin turn properly, and lay it over...happens everyday with manual, you don't have time to wait for a autoshift transmission ta drop gears, when you have to know which pieces of car you can steer around and which pieces you are going to drive over, on greasy ice... watch those trailer air lines... I just hope the CDL schools teach, feeling where the weight is, in all elements of weather conditions, and road surface textures, and grades, empty and loaded...manual shift has kept me awake durning my drive time for 19 years. New drivers would be wise, go see if you can find an old lucky 13 manual somewhere, and go get yourself get stuck in a simple 12 inch snow drift across some old backroad bobtail and teach yourself to feel the transmission, listen to the rpm and motor, and watch the drive shaft. Don't fall prey to thinking that a computer will do everything for you. Manual shift helped build and sustain this country for many decades and still is. AUTOSLEEP! TRANSMISSIONS, Don't get yourselves too self assured, cocky, drunk on hubris, right now, , you better go put down, at least another 3 to 5 trillion shifts starting in 2019 then analize that data, with the actual truck on the road before you should be able to claim any self worth. Hold yourselves to a limitless search for gaining knowledge especially with a technology soo new to trucking and still in its infancy . Shifting with a stick kept me awake a few more miles. It will be soo quiet in the cab now with nothing to do but listen to your talk text or whatever, until you get sleepy , then BOOOOOM! a huge owl goes POOF on the ROOF! of your sleeper and now your sun roof window leaks. IF you wake up, dont over correct that steering wheel, or freeze up cause ya gotta still steer through the cones and barriers, and not into on coming, cuz if you do, I truly hope that there is a nice soft corn field to land in when the time comes that the truck WILL lay it itself over. Home in Colorado, and not on board with AUTOSHIFT.

    fuck autoshift. i'm a 20 year old trucker getting started, and if automatics dominate the trucking world like they have the automobile world, i'm gonna be sick. i'm not gonna spend the next 30 or 40 years of my life driving a stupid automatic. they're borring, and dangerous. you're going along not paying attention or looking as far ahead, in anticipation of shifting. you just cruise along half brain dead, and BAM!

  • @defsummer

    Im a newbie, but i got to say, i do not like this transmission, even when i learned to drive car with an automatic, but driving a truck with this just dont feel like a real truck, its a good stuff this transmission but a lot of drivers at least in my country are too stupid for drive a truck and since this transmissions appears accidents has increase a fucking lot cause of inexperts and stupid truckers.
