WHAT TO SEE IN LA PAZ + BOLIVIAN FOOD TOUR // BOLIVIA TRAVEL VLOG

  • After pushing our way through altitude sickness when we first arrived in La Paz, we finally made it out of our apartment and into the bustling administrative capital of Bolivia! A new country for us, we were so excited to see the sights and start getting to know Bolivia.
    We spent the day exploring the city and trying as many local Bolivian dishes as we could, which is our preferred way of getting to know a new culture. We start our by day eating at a common chain restaurant called Wistupiku in the Sopacachi neighbourhood before making our way to San Pedro Prison, notoriously one of the most dangerous and lawless prisons in the world. From there we took mi teleferico up to El Alto to see the beautiful city views, and then headed back into the city centre to visit Mercado Lanza for lunch (which was an experience!). Then it was off to San Francisco Square where we found all sorts of art and food stalls, before finally seeing the notorious Witches Market which truly does hold many, many petrified llama fetuses.
    Throughout this day of exploring we managed to try 8 Bolivian foods: humintas, pastel de queso, api, fricase, mocochinchi, a fruit salad dessert bigger than Nicole's head, helada de canela, and choripan. It was a full day of exploring and eating, but we finish the day feeling like we had experienced quite a bit of La Paz in just one day!
    If you are wondering what to see in La Paz, if Bolivia is safe, or what foods to eat while you are in La Paz, then watch the video through to the end to see all the things you can get up to in just one day in the big city!

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  Год назад

      We had no issues with food and we tried ALOT of street food. Just focus on stalls that are popular and have foods that turnover quickly. Also look at foods that are cooked in front of you either by grilling or frying, etc. (so long as they use a lot of heat). Or you can find a food tour and go with a guide who knows where all the "safest" stalls are. Be warned though, once you dive into the street food you might never go back! 😊 Best of luck!

    how many days did it take for you to get over altitude sickness and what did you take if anything to alleviate symptoms?

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  9 месяцев назад

      Great question! We would not recommend doing what we did 😅 We landed at La Paz airport and slept at a hotel next to the airport, so we slept over 4000m and had a terrible sleep (headache, restlessness, no appetite, etc.). We moved to lower elevation the next day (in the main centre of the city), but we still felt unwell for many days. We tried drinking coca tea and taking anti-nausea meds, but it still wasn't great. If we could have driven in a bus to Bolivia from Chile we would have for sure so that our bodies could have acclimatized a bit during the drive (the land borders were still closed when we visited, so this wasn't an option). If you are in the same situation and have to fly into La Paz from low elevation, we would recommend taking altitude sickness medication before you arrive and staying on that for a little while (depending on how long your visit it). If you are visiting for a short time the altitude sickness could really ruin your holiday!

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  2 года назад +1

      That sounds like a great trip! For us we felt very safe while we were there and found everyone we interacted with to be very friendly. We did not hear of any events to be cautious about and, based on our experience, we find local events usually have little impact on travel plans unless it's related to flights or bus routes. The only consideration we'd propose is the altitude! Give yourself an extra day to acclimatize in La Paz or take altitude sickness pills. The altitude can certainly make you feel pretty crummy the first few days!

    • @PathsUnwritten
      @PathsUnwritten 2 года назад +1

      @@nicoleandmico Thank you very much. I was starting to get a little worried about the prospect, despite there being some amazing things I'd like to see there. During your time, did you hear of any crime or dangerous experiences that people you met had?
      Also, did you happen to get out to Tiwanaku? I'd love to hear any tips you might have!

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  2 года назад

      We didn't hear of anything dangerous in particular although our airbnb hosts did warn us of pickpockets in the city. After traveling through South America for almost 4 months now we find that this is a pretty common concern. So overall we would recommend taking the usual precautions for travel. For example don't wander too far away from the touristy neighborhoods/areas; don't walk around at night (best to taxi); if its possible avoid visible signs of wealth (smart watches, expensive cameras) but admitedly this is not always possible; don't put your phone down on a table, hold it in your hand loosely, or have it sticking out of your back pocket; make eye contact with strangers around you, it helps deter anyone with ill intent; etc. These are probably things you're aware of so we're sorry if it's repetitive! In any case many people are nice and friendly so you don't much to worry about except seeing all the sights and finding where you can find some delicious local food 😋 Also we never made it to Tiwanaku!!! We were only in Bolivia for 2 weeks so we didn't get a chance to see it all. Now we have another reason to come back so thank you for the tip 😁 O one more tip that might help you if you have any concerns about current events or safety: we recommend joining the Bolivia travel groups on Facebook (if you have one). The groups are pretty active and many people are talking about topics related to traveling throughout the country. If there are any disruptions or events travelers should know about, you can certainly find people talking about them. Enjoy your trip planning, we are excited for you already! 🤗
