Trains Passing In Giant Railroad Yard! Railroad Switching Seen From Cliff, CSX & Norfolk Southern

- Trains With DPUs And Trains Passing While Doing Railroad Switching At World Famous Coffey's Cliff At Norfolk Southern Railroad Yard In Chattanooga, Tennessee. Remote Control Locomotives Are Used While CSX And Norfolk Southern Trains Pass Through The 2nd Largest Norfolk Southern Yard. This Yard Also Has A Hump But It Was Out Of View. We also see the Railfan viewing amenities that include picnic tables, an office desk and the cliff itself with awesome views of the north end of the massive railroad yard. This is Debutts Yard which is named after Harry Debutts who was president of Southern Railway.
This is my first time to visit this yard. Coffey's Cliff is shown on Google Maps and is easy to find. An unmaintained lane leads to the cliff. The track closest to the cliff is a CSX line. Trains book through on this track at a good rate and if you use 161.370 you can get advance notice of northbound CSX trains approaching because they go over a defect detector. Other than that I didn't see much need for a scanner here.
I was able to get a couple of CSX movements on the closest track. I also got some run through NS trains including the gondola train with a DPU on the rear. Notice the remote control locomotives working the yard with the flashing yellow light on top. I rode here with Scott @1960gambit and we came back a couple of days later. This is the first video of mine from here and I will have another one soon. There is almost always a train moving although most of them move very slowly. On the last day that we came here we saw 4 trains moving at the same time.
This video also includes a fast CSX train knocking down the signal. That is railroad jargon which means the signal drops from green to red as the train passes it. We also made it to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. I will have a video showing that which will include a train ride and showing the turn table being used to spin a locomotive. I think that last train had the quietest DPU I almost didn't hear go by. To emphasize the lack of light, you could see Freddy flash reflecting off the bridge structures before it passed. Thanks for sharing. 👍

Unusual that you can get this close to a RR yard. Really neat! I can hear the fall cicadas in the background. They are really doing their noisy thing.

The most scenic bit in Chattanooga is the CSX line as it curls round Lookout Mountain, in and out of tunnel, and heads west over the Running Water trestle bridge then past Nickajack Lake. Also, the dual trestle across the Tennessee River in Bridgeport, Alabama. Well worth a visit!

yard action at its finest. i'd love to visit that yard personally. set up a grill at the table and feast all day long while watching the action. i really like the mother-slug combos. its really cool how the NS repurposes old power that would other wise be scrapped.
Loved these videos from Tennessee! I’m about three hours south of Chattanooga in Alabama. My grandfather and my great uncles all retired from the L & N Railroad.

Looks like a cool place to watch trains if i lived there as a kid u bet me and my grandfather would be obsessed with watching trains there he lived in north Delaware and we would go to Marcus hook and tons of other places and watch trains i miss him

Coffeys Cliff the place to be where you let the action come to you. It almost has the sound of a old motel and coffee shop along an old US Highway in the 1940s. It was a great Vantage point to cover all those arrivals departures and yardmoves. Once again the gondola train follows you plus the Cameo visit by the CSX WM sticker Fireball as the sun set likewise. Add in the yard set winking like fireflies and hump yard action usually never ceases. Good old Brandy acting like the referee telling the two kids to take their rubber Figure 8 elsewhere. Live action both Trackside and with the dogs

In Chattanooga there is a model train setup called Chattanooga Choo-choo. It has been decades since I last visited. However, if you're train lover it's worth a peek
Unfortunately since your visit the Choo-Choo has come under new ownership. They have made all kinds of changes. One of which is they ripped out the model railroad and have done a lot of other things that people can't stand. 😢
Your visit to Debutts Yard in Chattanooga, Tennessee was productive railfanning day, Jaw Tooth! There was a lot of action going on in the north end of the yard at Coffey's Cliff. You caught a couple of Norfolk Southern going in and out of Debutts Yard. The rest of the Norfolk Southern action was yard work. The CSX light motive power move was a southbound movement while the CSX train that appears at 29:13 is a northbound train. (Posted 16 August 2024 at1318 CDT.)
Coffey's Cliff, what a great spot to watch from, lots of action. That background noise was crickets. I don't think in some areas that aren't as noisy as I had a relative visit and they sat on the back porch and was amazed at the sound.

Jawtooth, a lot of those autoracks come out of Alabama. Mercedes, Honda, and Toyota are on NS lines and Hyundai is on CSX lines.

The signal on CSX is for trains heading southbound to Atlanta, looking the other way on CSX is looking for trains heading to Cowan, TN and Nashville.

@JawTooth Yes I did and the Southbound trains go through a tunnel on the way to Stevenson, and Bridgeport, AL. At Stevenson, NS has trackage rights to Chattanooga

That is a decent sized yard. Apparently they use it for sorting and classification. Several of those trains coming in you could see we're routed through the yard so they could be broken apart it looks like they've got a couple of miles of track on either side too lot of cars can be sorted and connected in that yard

Coffees Cliffs is a cool spot, see lots of activity. Too hot today to see any hobos catching out. Heck, the grain cars are fermenting already Lol!
You got that right! You can smell the rotting grain there. This was the second hottest that I have been this year. The hottest that I got was at Kenova, West Virginia. I was about to have a heat emergency there.
Not often you visit a rail yard! Nice shots JT! Any hump in that rail yard? As a kid we used to like watching the switchers build up a train using the hump in the local Allentown yard. Had a good overhead view much like your shots in this video. I like Brandi refereeing the kids play fight! My one year old chocolate Labrador plays with my 5 year old rough Collie in much the same way. The other Labs stay out of it!
