    I flew this on Continental (air micronesia) back in the 80s from HNL to GUM. It was an old 727. There were no entertainment systems. I must say the food we got is better than now. I recall 2 full meals and lots of snacks. What an experience. I wish they had cameras to easily record stuff bk then. I remember seeing Kosrae and Pohnpei and thinking they were so beautiful!

    The last time I made this trip was in the mid-90s, of course then it was Continental's Air Micronesia (Air Mike). I made my first Air Mike trip in the early 80s, flying the classic '3-Holer' 727-100, as well as the 722 and 757 in the 90s. I am glad those idiots (UA) in Chicago did not slash this service as was rumored, these routes are very important to the islanders of the Central Pacific. Very good video of an unusual route.

    Nice! I always wondered what these flights were like. I used to see an an old Continental 727-100 flying those routes and I wondered how a 727 could fly that far. I flew from Honolulu to Guam quite a few times when I was a flight attendant (on DC-10s). I’m thinking that was 8 or 9 hrs. Actually I flew on United from Honolulu straight to Guam and then transit to the flight to Hong Kong. This 16 hours flight was much better than the nonstop flight. They didn’t provide food and entertainment on that Boeing 777-200. The worst thing is my flight is also cancelled due to the protest in Hong Kong. They only got the nonstop flight every two days. And I am standing by so I didn’t get another flight ticket. I need to wait for two days!!!! (Actually that is great because I get more time to play lol🤭)

    A very interesting trip from HNL to the outposts of the Federated States of Micronesia. Kosrae, Pohnpei and Chuuk (Truk) looked very inviting from the air and would be interesting to explore. Due to the small length of runways, larger jets could not land on some of these islands. I am not sure if that placed limitations on the amount of catering that could be stored in the small galley of a 737. So in light of that, I will not be too critical of the catering given it's complexity of operation.

    • @michaelhorgan9525
      @michaelhorgan9525 4 года назад

      Catering is likely limited due to weight restrictions. Some people like to fill up coolers full of meat in GUM which gets sent to friends and family then is sent back with fresh fish as you can get tuna for dirt cheap over there.

    I'm glad that you had the chance to fly this iconic air route. Some more info: The jet routes were pioneered by Continental using B 737s, the only commercial jet available then that could land on 4800' crushed coral gravel airstrips. The airports have had serious upgrades since then. I have flown this route dozens of times since 1976, most recently this February, 2019, 43 years! This flight used to be super fun with super delightful cabin crews. Since the Continental merger with United as well as 9/11 and the rise of security issues, flying the route has become a terrible ordeal. Sad. Still, I hope all aviation geeks get to ride this amazing flight.

    At 6:15 , the IFE has the same aesthetic as DirecTV (a U.S. Cable Company) has for when you flip through the channels. I know this since I used to have DirecTV, and it's the same font and style like the regular cable at home.

      That’s because this is a DirecTV unit in the 737. I wish we had live TV on aircraft again instead of the limited selection of TV shows you nowadays get on airplanes.

    Looking on google maps, Kwajalein looks like the sort of place you get posted to for punishment. You can either get court marshalled or we’ll send you to Kwajalein. Could be wrong
