Yeah we're actually planning on making videos on these sort of "stories". Not entire company histories, but an in-depth vid focusing entirely on what, why, who, where, etc.
Business Casual if you do make a series like that try to make one on Enron I'll be surprised if you didn't come out confuse trying to understand the whole fiasco.
How come you didn't discuss Porsche's near bankruptcy in the 90s and how the Porsche Boxster got them out of it, it seems like a pretty significant thing in the history of the company
Angsty And Proud I hear ya !!!! I own 2001 boxter S and I love it man !!! Forget that IMS bearing thing ...not mine ...no problems with 91,000 miles ....” German engineering “!!!!
Boxster are just a cheap peasant version of the 911 for people who wants to appear rich. where i live each time someone see a boxer we keep laughing about him being a "VISA King".
@@Francois_Dupont You sound so insanely snobby and ignorant. First of all, I wouldn't say it's a 911 replacement of any sort, It's smaller, mid-engined, and a two-seater. Just let people enjoy what they like in peace, not everybody buys sports cars to impress others.
Porsche (holding company) owns 27% of Volkswagen group and Porsche has 51% decision making power in Volkswagen group. [Porsche car company (Not the holding company) is owned by Volkswagen group].
At that point, I have no idea how the company's command structure work. I am happy as long as they make a cool car. Stay in business till the day I can afford one. I met a gut who does the engine restoration. He told me some 911 owner in Ma, Co or other environmental conscious states want to switch 911 engine to Subaru engine for the sake of environment. (He said Subaru and 911 is in similar engine structure.) Political debate asides, I just wonder is that Porsche or Subaru. I did not ask how they did register that Porsche/ Subaru car.
John Ridge Porsche and Subaru are the only major companies that use " FLAT CYLINDER ENGINES " MOST others use V - CONFIGURATION CYLINDERS , you would have heard V6 , V8 , V10, V12 ,,,,,,,, FLAT ENGINES NEED MORE SPACE - AND THAT , PLACEMENT PROVIDES BETTER HANDLING (low center of gravity)...........V - config engines save space and weight.

Interesting story about the 911 and how the iconic car almost got scrapped one day. So way back in the late 1960's the brand porsche was quite unsure of itself. The rather difficult to drive 911 seemed out of date in comparison to the new styled super cars of the era, indeed the Ford GTs and the Lamboghini Miuras made the 911 seem outdated with it's smaller engine and it's weird engine placement, especially compared to american cars. One thing which is very often looked over in this was the fact that luxury cars were not German at the time at all, but American and Brits made the luxury automobile. In comparison to the competition in the early 1970's the 911 seemed like old technology, slow and quite pale and not as something we today revere as something classic and cool. And the slumping sales that the 991 had were enough to prove that the car was ready to end its' life cycle. Ferry and several other higher ups in the company wanted something new, a GT car that could compete with the new bigger and badder sports car of the 1970's. So onto the drawing board they went and designed a new car. The new car couldn't be rear engined since they had to fit new technology into the engine that made it bigger. The new GT car was dubbed the 928, and prototypes were fitted with 5 liter v8 engines with 300 horsepowers, some engineers even wanted a v10 engine for the car. Then came the fuel crisis of the 70's resulting in the engine finally being smaller, but still a v8. The initial response for the car was mild, with purists of the brand not liking it, indeed the 928 is a very different car from the 911, and at the time a much more expensive car. At the time, the executive director of Porsche Ersnt Fuhrman who saw the project through the 70's had to step down due to plumetting sales infavor of a new american executive director Peter Schultz who became manager of the entire brand in 1980. A time when both the 911 and the 928 and a similar car the 924 were both on the market. The 911 was considered by the engineers for the company as the "pure" sports car and the morale of the entire workforce of Porsche was dropping. One day at a meeting Peter was standing with a chart showing the life cycles of the three different models the brand offered at the time, the 924, 928 and the 911. Peter took a marker and extended the life of the 911 by simply just continuing the line on the chart, off the white board and even off the board, creating the immortality of the car. Peter Schultz saved the 911, and probably saved the Porsche brand by pulling a stunt like that. Because let's face it, if we look at the pop up headlights of the 928 today we can only laugh at how some people thought that the 928 was an replacement of an icon. the 911 is today a legend because it still looks the same, and Porsche as we know it base almost all their cars around the design of the 911.
I actually didn't mind typing that, since I really like this channel and I was very happy to provide with extra info on something I know! But honestly, maybe 30 minutes or so...
Your explanation is so clear that i memorize most of the key point with ease. I guess you are one of the best tutor. Thank you very much for your handwork!
Original VW design was stolen from Tatra - it's important to mention that. Also, worth mention, story that 911 was originally called 901 (until Peugeot protested)

If you were wondering what the writing at 2:08 said, it means ''Ph.D of engineering (honoris causa) Ferdinand Porsche Ltd. , constructions and consulting for the building of engines and vehicles'' Incorporating a business in Germany back then had to be very precise to avoid any confusion with other businesses of the same name, which especially applied to common german names such as Meyer, Schulze, Schmidt, Schröder, etc. , which most likely resulted in that description.
Slipped into that ad real smooth like. I think you could be successful also producing videos about financial events, like the introduction of anti-trust laws, and the beginnings of the stock market system.

There is a documentary on Enron on Frontline on RUclips I believe. Tells the whole story.
You really should have made this video 9 minutes and 11 seconds long...
Business Casual Actually the original 911 was called the 9:01. Good easter egg
Kamikaze because one of their best selling cars is called the 911. Not because of 9/11.
