Thanks for the video - a close friend bought a 2006 Malibu and I’m double checking that the spark plugs are under that Ecotec 2.2 cover. As an FYI, though - I do NOT trust those cheap Harbor Freight style torque wrenches to place the approx 20 ft lbs of torque you use on spark plugs. The Harbor Freight digital adapter is better as you can see the progression in torque, esp at low torque values. Either that or a much more expensive digital torque wrench - 3/8 or 1/4 that is accurate down to 20 ft lbs. The cheap Harbor Freights are fine for torquing lug nuts and such, but I don’t trust the “click” at lower torque values (on both the 3/8 and 1/4). Ask me how I know!
i figured this was how i changed the spark plug assembly on my 05 classic (supposedly a fleet version of the malibu) with swapping out the coil plugs too at the same time, kinda wish the air filter housing used clips like yours instead of being screwed together.
I just picked up a 2.2 Saturn Vue with 111K. While I am replacing the spark plugs, should I also replace the ignition coil / control module while I am at? I see a ignition control module and four Coil-On-Plug Boots one made by NGK that looks like a good buy, but I don't know if it's needed at 111K.
If the plugs have the zinc coating like most modern plugs do anti seize is not needed or recommended. If you go to the NGK site it's in the instructions. Because the anti seize makes 18 ft lb act like 50 ft-lb on the slippery surface
@@jarvisparker8738 that’s just not correct. You can use a breaker bar literally anytime, it actually saves the teeth of your ratchets to break the seal first then unwind the rest of the way 🤷♂️
I'm looking, but do you have a video for replacing 5hat coil pack? I have an '06 HHR with that setup, but all the videos I found have the individual ignition coils, not that rail?
You are so far the only video I have found working on this motor. Is there any way to get to the starter from the top to test it or does it have to be lifted?
You may be able to remove the intake to get at the starter from above. Not sure how much work that would be. Otherwise it will have to be up on stands.

Ok so do u have a rubber hose that runs to the black plastic box (which goes to air intake) but there is not a small nipple on the black box to connect onto? The hose is only gonna be about 5 inches and runs straight part to part. Ive had problems with it.before. let me know if u find out anything im gonna look thru my repair manual I can't even remember what all these components are called

On '04 sunfire, I'm getting a po340 code (no camshaft sensor)and I just pulled my coil pack out and plugs, flip them over grounded plugs and I'm getting spark on for good-looking plugs but 2 look weak, bought new - ya think that'll fix?
Hey you didnt show how to remove the throttle body drive cables that go over the spark plug housing plate. It appears that you removed them before filming the video.
Im having issue with 05 malibu i have question my buddy checked for spark by removing what u removed in video that module and he was looking for spark out of the 4 tubes..is this correct way to check..?
You would have to fit a spark plug into the boot, keeping tension on it. The threaded part of the plug should be grounded to complete the circuit. Another way might be to use a spark indicator (such as Lisle 19380) and place it on the boot as the car is cranked. Thanks for watching and good luck with your project!
There is no external pcv valve, it’s internal (inside valve cover) and must be ordered from GM. Autozone and all them guys will sell u an external one and there isn’t one on this engine!!! Lmao
when u go to the store they have two different lengths almost an inch lol I put the shorter ones in this morning cars running but I don't want issues later on
I have a 2005 chevy Malibu classic I bought it with 80,000 original miles I ran synthetic oil every 3,000 I would change it the car at 130,000 miles would not turn on no compression took it in to shop was told one of the guides broke so I replaced it with new head gasket and valves 8,000 miles later piston rings went out no compression Replaced the motor with used 80,000 mile engine I love this car it’s my daily driver I baby it I hope to get 200,000 miles out of it
Not exactly. I could not get the spark plugs out .I don't think my socket was long enough, and it was 5° outside. The connector wouldn't come off, and rubber boot came off the cylinder head unit. So it is going to the shop. The video did help give me an idea of what I was was supposed to do.
why replace spark plugs on a fuel injected engine??? just use some sand paper and clean em up ... have mine in the engine since i bought it in 2007... still kicking!! on my hhr
AmazonBoxie actually it isn't. Any tool such as a larger tool like a torque wrench that gives you better control while removing spark plugs is a good idea. Any tool that prevents you from twisting or torquing the spark plug as it comes out is a good idea. This prevents messing up the threads and cracking the porcelain.
BMikeAD why not "crack um loose with it"? As long as your careful that is. Its essentially being used as a breaker bar. And if you need the leverage, and find one in your back pocket with no breaker bar in sight, it's obviously the next best option and the next step if your ratchet doesn't give enough leverage
Freedom Fighterz most people would have a breaker bar on hand before a torque wrench but yeah I guess as long as you crank it up and don't exceed the max torque it'd be fine. Good way throw off the calibration. I would sooner use a cheater bar or ball peen on my rachet than risk damage to my torque wrench.

I’ve never seen 18ft/lb of torque on a spark plug going into a block. Seems a bit excessive for a setting crush washers.

So many possibilities. Fuel delivery and spark would be the first things I would check.
I thought checking pre gapped plugs were a good idea. Just In case they were dropped during shipping/packing.

I think you mean pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) and I don't know but most cars still have them.

In my experience, the replacement plugs should be identical in every dimension.
The Original Mechanic that's the problem I don't know the factory specs they have been changed before

The only other thing to do is check with a GM dealer parts dept to see what they have for your car.
How do you test a coil on this engine?
I would use a meter and ohm it out. Check a known good one for reference and compare. The reading should be low, under 10 ohms I would think.
for the record....anti seize is no longer needed in 99.9% of vehicles those Autolites you got there don't require it
How long can a eco tec engine run for how many miles can they go up to
I've heard of some going for a couple hundred thousand miles but of course that guarantees nothing.
