I honestly cannot praise Madhouse enough with how they’ve kept Frieren going without any noticeable drop in animation. The fight between Frieren and Fern vs Fakeren was practically movie quality animation.

The animation in this episode was nothing short of incredible yet they still find the time to add small details everywhere like Ubel watching her younger self in the scissor's reflection.

And that stare was the first time watching anime I got IRL spooked. Like it actually sent a shiver down my spine.
What really got me was when we see Frieren in the mimic, there's already another one laying dismantled behind Fern. Which means she's in the second one .. in the same room. 😂

I mean, this is the mimic dungeon, surely every single chest in this dungeon is a mimic.
That big chest in the middle of the room is the true final boss of the dungeon.
I went back and looked, its even worst, that's the THIRD ONE she was trapped in LOL. One to the far left, one next to her feet and the last one she's trapped in again. the room had three mimics LOL.

Fern was probably leaving her there thinking "haven't you've learnt your lesson yet?".
The weakness with her "cutting" magic is if the defense magic does not depend on a physical medium, she herself could not imagine cutting it. What made her scary is her ability to copy someone's magic just by emphatisng with them.
Her worse match up is definitely Fern, as she only rely on basic magic attack and defense and even if she tries to copy anything from her, it would be some magic useless in combat.
also, it's about the attack range. Fern's offense magic were like soldier who can use DMR, MR, and AR at the same time but had faster gun equipping just like how to hold the pistol.
But, who know who faster to cast the spell, between Ubel's Sorganeil against Fern's attack basic
Frieren clone angry look was chilling.
5:26 To be fair, Denken's plan worked. Richter's team defeated their target, but they got jumped by Sense clone.
For me, this is the best episode to date.
Man i just like how fern was able to witness the pinnacle of magic. She still has a lot to learn, Frieren even pointed out that there are openings for Fern to attack that Fern doesnt notice.
All in all im happy to see what Frieren was capable of, this just makes me want to see what the other members of the hero party could do.
I like how Frieren’s internal monologue on that was “Fern isn’t good enough to see that opening yet.” As if she has absolute confidence that Fern will one day achieve the level of skill needed to do that.
And this is the mage who has lost at least 11 times to other mages.
I don't often use the word "Masterpiece" for a single episode. But that one clearly was.
So many things to talk about:
-Frieren the menace even without arms
-Sense's Clone turning everything into skewer meat
-Übel's cuting power that become stronger the more delusional she become. ( the day she become crazy enough to think she can cut Diamond, no one is safe).
Also that ending made me burst out laughing. Edel casually talk to Land like they are the best buddies. Land practically:
"Who the Fck are you?"

She can't cut basic defense magic, only things that she thinks could be cut normally even if they have spells on them. She is a really good match for anyone using items or things like hair as their defense. I think you need to adapt and defend like how Wirbel did in the first test.
This! The world of Frieren is Rock-Paper-Scissors, there are battles in which depending on the compatibility of who you face, it can become a very disadvantageous or advantageous confrontation (Sometimes simply neutral). Ubel can cut anything she genuinely thinks she can cut (at a monstrous level of imagination and instinct btw), in the examples shown in this episode it was the clothes of the magician she murdered and Sense's hair. (Pretty simple to understand). She cannot cut basic barrier defense.

@@zam023 I think that spell is either a curse (only known magic mages can't sense) or a super advanced spell that uses something like hiding your mana during an attack (something that Denken mentioned not even the most skilled mage can do but Fern called it the height of magic). That's my two theories as an anime only.
The Frieren clone basically used raw mana and will. Basically like telekinesis. Not a spell. Just her raw power. Basically like how she cut that demon Draghts hands off. Frieren can just manipulate her mana at will without using an actual spell.
nah, you can still defend against her cutting attack with a basic defensive spell because it's engraved in her mind that defensive magic is made to block attacks. problem with sense and that dude who died was they use defense magic with physical objects that can easily be cut under normal circumstances (cloth, hair), so ubel can easily imagine cutting those simply because it's common sense you can cut through such things lol
Doesn’t help that as a mage she have definitely learn defense magic. If she uses it for defense and trust it, she really can’t imagine herself cutting through ner own defense because that could weaken her own defense magic
Ah, another peak episode of Frieren that somehow surpasses the previous one, knowing there only two episodes left has me absolutely devastated.
Both Frieren and Ubel SCARED me this episode. There was some serious lore implications to the level of power they displayed and its blowing my mind.
Important for Ubel, they clearly state that she cant imagine cutting through pure magical defense, like the bog standard barrier "Since it was made to block magic"
Its only when your defense gets fancy (like with a cloak or hair) that Ubel becomes the perfect counter.
So in reality if you know that she is not some overpowered lady, I mean Wirbel defeated her afterall.
Exactly, heck maybe some normal unecnhanted plate armour would probably be enough for her to think that she can't cut it instinctively
Übel relies on insctinct she dosn't understand magic on a techncal level.
She can imagine herself cuting trough clothes or hair willfully ignoring all the magic that protects them but she may have a tough time cutting stronguer metals or magic barriers becouse she can't visualice herself cutig trough them so easily
Her magic detection and concealment are allso lacking, and her mana pool is nothing major, allso becouse of her methods she can copy a few spells but not just any spell, it has to be a very personal spell to the original caster and she needs to have certain level of understanding of the mage's tought process and emotions to Copy them.
This is why one of her toughest matches woud be Fern.
Seeing everyone fight the Frieren clone would of been awesome.

Proceeds to get packed up and would have caught an L if Frieren wasn't there. Great episode overall explaining how fights can just be about bad matchups regardless of strength showing this world is about tactics rather than who has the bigger number.

That episode was wild and the Frieren clone fight was even better than I have had anticipated. I could almost bet, anyone who would have joined them, surely would have thrown their bottle after witnessing the first couple of Frieren's attacks.
It also showed one interesting thing: Frieren can apparently use magic without a staff acting as a catalyst. The way the clone has torpedoed Fern away, after that murderous death glare, was the last thing I did expect in that scene to happen.
Also, Übel is now confirmed quite the twisted character. However, as she said before, she has a range of about five meters. So, as long as you keep distance to her, you'll be fine for the time being.
I am still wondering if that ultra big chest was a Mimic too...

This episode was a visual feast. I loved learning more about Übel's ability and how the rock / paper / scissor method applies when pairing mages against one another.
Of all the series watched recently, this is the one I've binged multiple reactions for. We've been truly blessed with a high-quality show.

the frieren world will be in a treat when ubel somehow managed to visualize cutting through basic defense magic, right now she can only visualize cutting things that can be cut, even more so things that are MEANT to be cut
You can still use the ordinary defensive magic like the actual spell to block her attacks since she can't imagine using her cutting spell against the spell that can block all magics. Even though that cloak was an ultimate defensive spell, its biggest flaw was that it had an appearance of a cloak or fabric, which Übel doesn't have any problem in imagining about cutting it.
I will forever remember Denkens face when he saw Frieren in a mimic that was best part of the episode (at least for me)
I wonder what Clone Frieren did to Fern, seeing Fern thrown back like that was such a surprise and then those eyes facing Fern was such a thrill to see too. The real Frieren would never look at Fern in such a way so it was interesting to see. I am also quite intrigued to see more Methode. The fact that she was able to confidently hold out against Fern on her own makes me wonder what she is capable of because she seems very versatile. I hope the third exam showcases her some more.
It kinda looks like she was using gravity magic, but I can’t really say. I’ve been waiting for this episode to see it animated, and I’m still as lost as when I read it in the manga 😂

Magic that only alters the natural laws of the world (i.e. applying magic/mana to "gravity" itself), is probably something that cannot be sensed. I mean, how can anyone comprehend or even sense magic that is applied to change a concept itself?
So all Fern experiences is the (now) "natural" effects of gravity and she can't sense it as magic.

Its basicly pure Visualisation with out hand or staff she just imagines it happening and 100% viewing herself as that its real. Its not really magic anymore its more like a real natural phenomon. Dam this episode was great it's just getting better as we go along
I just got an epiphany - At the start of the show Frieren cried when Himmel died. In the past when Fremme died she did not even shed a tear or had any remorse (showed). Same with the drunken priest (forgot his name). Now we saw her smile when Fren told that she could killed her. All together - Flamme dreams are showing in and is how beautiful is represented.
Everybody seems to be classically trained mages, except for Ubel. She's a wildcard that thinks outside the box, which makes up for any deficiencies she might have.
Easily one of my favorite episodes of Frieren, if not the favorite. Not just the sakuga,, but how Ubel was able to beat Sense, and how the explanation behind it tied back to things we learned about mage battles episodes ago, so that it felt totally believable. It's so fucking amazing how Madhouse has not missed a single time, in an era where we cynically expect delays and drops in quality for hyped shows. Really hats off to the animators man, holy fucking shit.
Eighty years, Frieren is comparing Fern to the Demon Lord...

If I hadn't made a vow to never sexualize Frieren, I'd say "I'd let a clone of Frieren break my staff any day".
The thing that prevents Uber’s cutting ability from being overpowered is that it is intuitive and instinctive and Ubel cannot actually consciously control what she believes should be cuttable. Like she can’t just sit down and, as an act of deliberate will, decide that ok, I think steel is cuttable, and suddenly gain the ability to cut through a ten foot wide pillar of solid metal. And she can’t just will herself to believe that she cut through regular defence magic, as seen in her inability to cut through defence magic in her fight with Wirbel. She can cut through cloth and hair because she basically grew up seeing cloth and hair being routinely cut as part of daily life.
Her cutting spell also has a limited range, of about 6 feet, as also shown in the fight with Wirbel.
So anyone who who relies and regular defensive magic or normal enchanted metal armor can block her cutting spell. And anyone with reliable accurate long range attacks who can stay out of sight while sniping at her would dominate her in a fight.
Uber’s worst matchup might actually be Fern.
Übels strenght is her biggest weakness her imagination. If you can convince her she can't cut it she can't.
Knowing how broken Ubel is, and how easy she kills people, it makes her decision to learn Wirbel's binding ability a lot more significant. In Ubel's own words, she wants to have a buffer time where she makes the decision to kill. I think Ubel recognizes her own power is an on/off KILL button, and wants to learn a non-lethal power so she can disable her target without killing it.
Frieren is the GOAT. No question.
The best story, paired with the absolute best animation and downright EPIC music. The perfect trifecta.
I got bloody chills during that magic duel. THIS is why I'm such a sucker for magic showdowns. The choreography, the escalation, the sheer power in display.
NGL, that Copy-Frieren VS Frieren and Fern? I watched it three times, back to back, before continuing with the episode's conclusion. This series has made me do that So. Many. Times. already.
-Fern's training when she was a kid
-Fern's Zoltraak VS the original, demonic Zoltraak
-Stark VS the Dragon
-Fern and Stark VS the Demon Duo
-Frieren VS Aura
-Fern's test
-Frieren VS Denken (all the way to Frieren breaking the barrier)

-Copy-Frieren VS Frieren and Fern
It's just so good! This is how you make magic look powerful but beatable... with sacrifices. I seriously feared for Fern for a second there. Especially when you see her staff all broken. I so hope that can be fixed later and that Fern gets to become a First Class Mage. Frieren is a given... if she doesn't get points subtracted for her mimic runs.
Eaten By a Mimic Count: 3, maybe 4, considering there was another mimic at Fern's feet in that room. (I will make a full, series wide mimic count at a later time).
It's almost painful to know we'll only have two more episodes of this unparalleled jewel. But at least it's going with a bang.
Ubel's imagination of cutting is actually a set up for explaining Frieren's imagination of her spell that doesn't classify as magic which the copy frieren used against Fern.
Frieren probably witnessed something that's why she was able to use that spell.
I thought Fern has a chance now against Frieren 1v1 but bro...... Nah....... She can't.....
I like to think that the spell Frieren used to defeat her double is a spell she used on the demon king.
I don’t think it’s as much as Ubel can cut through any defense but more that she can cut through any defenses channeled through physical objects she can imagine cutting. Like she wouldn’t be able to break through a regular barrier spell but hair and cloth is easy to imagine cutting

Ubel's true strengh is being able to learn any magic just by undertanting the caster enough. Imagine her with clone magic or something similar and always learning more magic. lol
If Ubel learns the cloning spell, she can have one of her clones hide and use the binding spell while another clone closes in with the cutting spell. That would be an absolutely nightmarish combo to have to face.
This episode was so amazingly awesome and I love it! Like the fights was not only next level but several levels ahead of most stuff you usually would see in fights between mages. Because Frieren or her clone basically did summon a black hole in this fights which was one small part of the whole combat. As it’s even hard to put into words just how awesome it was. Especially after Fern managed to blast away both of Frieren’s arms. Before getting shoved into the wall with some kind of telekinetic blast. As Frieren said afterwards she have not needed to use that attack in 80 years. Aka against the demon king which really is a great compliment for Fern to be compared to the demon king in how hard this battle was for her.
But we had many other great and amazing scenes as well. Like how we learned more about Ubel and a bit of her backstory. As she is able to cut though a magical cloak that is basically uncuttable. Which so many other mages struggle to even affect it. But Ubel just cut though it like a sharp scissor would cut though a thin bit of fabric. So Ubel’s brain really is wired differently as she can visualize cutting though things that should not be cut though. So when Ubel went off again Sensei’s clone Sensei already know that clone did not stand a chance. Which is really impressive seeing how that clone did take out both Richter and Lawine. Plus even Denken know that he would not even stand a chance against it.
So all in all a very amazing episode. And last but not least I loved how Frieren was stuck in a mimic in the end. As now everyone else could see her in this pathetic state😂 and even more funny was how it was not only one mimic in frame but three
Man I did not expect Frieren to cast Shinra Tensei on Fern, but then again I'm pretty sure they hinted this attack when she "fought" against Draht.

I'm pretty sure Frieren was complimenting Fern by saying she didn't have to use that attack in 80 years. She meant that the replica throwing Fern up against the wall was a spell she hadn't had to use in 80 years( when battling The Demon King). Killing the replica was nothing for her, she just got up really close and blasted.
It was the invisible spell that shocked Fern that was something new. Remember? She said she couldn't even sense magic.
I suppose I could be wrong though.
Oh, also Übel is weak to defensive spells.Wirbel was able to defend against her even before pinning her down. I think she's completely beatable if she doesn't know about your spells and abilities. Once she understands then she's dangerous however, it seems that once she understands you and is able to empathize with you she is less interested in killing you? I guess meaning that once she gets you the whole idea is boring to her but beforehand the thoughts of beating and torturing you is hot to her???
Yea the spell she hadn’t used in 80 years isn’t the one she used to kill the clone, but the one the clone used to attack fern.
Frieren has been hyping up Fern and complimenting her this whole test especially once fern said she thought she could kill Frieren

Ubel can't cut "magic" because to be fair it's impossible to visualize cutting what is by definition the intangible. That's why basic defensive spell can block Reelseiden. However, and this might be hard to understand, what she can't cut is the spell itself; everything else (including rocks) is fair game. In other words, if the target is "something tangible" instead of a spell, she would be able to cut it. Sense and Burg's problem is precisely that the extremely sophisticated and impenetrable defensive magic they're using is designed to be very hard to comprehend and decipher by other mages, so Ubel can simply ignore its existence because she can't visualize the defensive magic itself. She's literally too "stupid" to understand that there's an invincibility spell there. That's what makes them both easy for her to cut.
Fern made Fakeren use a spell she hadn't used since the Demon King, so proud of her :))

Ubel didn’t intend to kill that guy tbf, she even said she accidentally cut too deep. You aren’t supposed to kill them or you fail, she knew that so it wasn’t on purpose.
To be fair - Übel mentioned that she "cut too deep". So I think just cutting a little to make him back off was the plan, but she has troubles controlling her power. Does not change the fact that she is crazy though - just killing a men and then shrugging it off as it was nothing....
that's why i mentioned how she needed to poke not slice but it shows how psycho she is that her holding back is not how someone who values life would hold back with that cut
@@AHBrandonReviewsI am not convinced that her ability can poke anything. All we have seen it do is slash, at least as far as I remember, might very well be the only thing it can do. Hind sight being 20/20 aiming in front of, or at, his feet would have been a safer choice.
On the other hand it does require a certain amount of arrogance to expect that nothing could go wrong when being used as a target practice for various unchecked offensive spells.
That test strikes me as though out as putting a bulletproof vest on someone and then using various firearms to check its efficiency, what could possibly go wrong?

Ubel is a crazy person. I mean an actual crazy one.
The current manga has enough for about 36 more episodes and is just starting a new arc. A new chapter comes out just about every three weeks.
Ubel isn't the most insane mage but probably the most insane person.
03:33 - Ubel clearly states in this episode that she cannot visualize cutting through defensive magic.
Whereas that 2nd Class mage proctor and Sense use physical objects (a cloak and one's hair) imbued with layers of magic for their defense. And it's these physical objects that Ubel seems to be able to visualize differently from others as mere items that can be cut...just like with scissors.
So while faster casting would be an advantage against Ubel, it's not the only factor. Plus we've seen how terrifying restraining magic like Wirbel's can be which is an entirely different factor from just pure speed.
But I completely agree - Ubel is just mentally broken. Her reaction when she killed the proctor shows just how scary she can be lol
With those mimics in the treasure room, how did the Frieren copy not get caught in one of them?
The biggest mystery to me with this episode is what kind of magic Frieren used against fern, and I really think that we aren’t gonna find out until we reach the end, since she apparently hasn’t used it in 80 years, and seeing how it’s been 79 years since she returned from her journey to killing the demon king, we can probably assume that she last used it on the demon king himself, so maybe we don’t get an explanation until we get the demon king flashback. Man, I love Frieren, imma have to rewatch this episode a couple of times, as usual 😂

I'm glad the golems can use healing magic too, I got really considered for Lawine and I guess Richter because they looked like fatal wounds. It is unfortunate the two ended up encountering Sense, I was hoping they would all get to pass this exam since they worked together but of course that was an unlikely thing to hope about. Funny how a mimic was already have its way with Frieren after they had just gone through a tough ordeal. I wonder why Laufen was able to get Frieren, it makes it sounds like she finds herself getting trapped in mimics more often than not lol.
I actually like how Ubel shows how important visualization plays into magic. Yea the guy has impenetrable clothes, but Ubel is like yea but it’s just cloth and cloth can be cut.
Also the guy would have eventually died anyway, if he was that confident in his impenetrable robe a demon would have end him the same way.
the thing that makes magic interesting in this world is magic is all about visualization and Ubel's magic is the best way to get that across to the viewer to understand the fundamentals of magic in their world
ehhhhh not really. Ubel really is a special case that she lack the common sense or is delusional enough to believe something anyone would deem impossible is possible. Imagination and visualization is not the only thing here. like sure anyone could imagine themselves beating the hell out of mike tyson in a boxing match but do you actually believe you could do that? Anyone could imagine breaking a diamond in their palm but do you actually believe it's possible? if there is even slight doubt then no it would not work.

All I gotta say is Methode can defeat Fern. Fern is over hyped by people they are actually blinded by the fact that she's freirens apprentice.

My head Canon is when clone frieren blew away Fern that's a different type of magic.. There's holy magic demon magic... Guessing that was maybe some kind of elven magic

In so many ways this was the best episode. And I die on this hill, Übel is my favorite character now.

ubel is probably really trying to test waters because yes she has some (a lot) screws lose, but her intention is probably trying to find out if that cloak is that unbreakable which would be the perfect test for her cause so far she intuitively imagines cloth is easy to cut. she probably has accepted the possibility the guy could die but she willing to do it cause shes just like that.
tho her cutting magic is not that op cause defense shield magic is not something she has intuitively learned that you can cut it. her talent is that she can ignore all the principle of magic when her intuition of something is strong including upbringing of other people and why they choose to use spells.
I think Ubel go full power at the exam cause everybody was saying you can't make it.
Well this one was not the first mage dying a at a mage exam.
They explained that it's not that simple and it's not like Ubel is so over-powered. Sense and the test proctor she killed were simply especially ill-suited to counter her speciality spell. Land even brought up how Wirbel defeated her and was able to block her cutting spell with zero problems and she agreed that she can't easily visualize cutting through the basic defense magic eveybody uses, but Sense and Burg chose to not use in favor of their personal gimmick. A ton of the other test takes could conceivably kick her ass, even if those same test takes would almost certainly be killed by Sense. As Methode said, it's basically a complex game of Rock-Paper-Scissors.

Ubel's actions might have been manslaughter by modern terms, since by her own words she didn't intend to kill the examiner (after all she knew if she did then she'd fail the test), she just misjudged how deeply she was going to cut him.

Hello! i was sure fern was gonna get hurt, had a hunch. When it happened i was like "yup" but of course i knew she wouldnt die... now what surprised me the most is how sad seeing the staff broke made me, cause shes had that from when she was just a little girl and its probably a gift from Heiter, it hit me in a way no other item in anime has before

Thus, Ubel, Whose Mindset is Not Bounded Too Logically, or by Common Sense; Can Envision, If it Can be Cut, I will Cut It. While Other Mages saw the Aura around Burg thought, I am Never Gonna beat that (Bounded by Logic, Reason, & Common Sense). What Ubel Only Sees in her Mind's eye, is Burg's Cloak, which consist of cloth, which in her Mind can be 'Cut'. Therefore, What limits other mages, Does Not Apply to Flammel, Frieren, and Now, Ubel.

Übel *cannot* cut through *anything.* She can cut through anything she can *imagine* herself cutting through. So she explicitly *can't* cut through normal defensive magic.

Absolute masterpiece. We had character development, we had badass staredowns, an amazingly epic fight and mimic-business for levity (did I spell that right?). This series is just so good.
Ubel is exactly what I always said: She is capital-e Evil. A bad person that is beloved for her... armpits, apparently. Idk. Fern and/or Frieren will kill her though, that is an obvious upcoming fight.
Sidenote though: That spell that dumpstered Fern that wasn't a spell or something? Frieren mentioned she hasn't used it in about 80 years. That might line up with the party fighting the Demon King. Maybe that - undetectable - spell was key to defeating the Demon King. Just a random thought.
