A few months back we rolled through Matamata, answering the question about where was Hobbiton filmed in New Zealand (which should be "where was the Hobbit Trilogy and Lord Of the Rings trilogies filmed", but no stress), so we knew as part of Reveal NZ we'd have to make our way back to see the Shire, Biboa's house and the movie set.
The Hobbiton Movie Set is a tour that kicks off from The Shire's Rest and last's about 2 hours. It's where Peter Jackson and team first scouted for the site to film Lord of the Rings and returned to smash out the Hobbit Trilogy as well. The tour takes you around more than one location and wraps up with a free drink as well, a few bevvys that are unique to The Shire and this little Hobiton village only.

The best part is watching Stacey's face actually enjoy Hobbit town having never seen an entire film. We assume by now she has at least seen one, and appreciated the wonderful cinematography. Especially since you guys always deliver beautiful shots.
Kim and I are really enjoying this series, though we'll never get used to the price of fuel 😬 We're currently paying under $2 per gallon with diesel not far behind.
Of you do come and do a north American tour it'll be way cheaper.

Errmm... I still haven't seen any of the movies 😂 but after basically everyone in the comments has told me I have to watch, I probably should get onto that! So happy you guys are enjoying the series, it's been a lot of fun to film. Oh wow you definitely get a lot more bang for your buck than we do!

My son worked on all of the Lord of the Rings movies and I got to go to the wrap party after filming was finished. I met all the stars... it was AMAZING. Great work you two, I love that you don't have corny music playing or silly visual effects. Very enjoyable, thanks :)

I lived in Rotorua for nearly forty years, also been to Hobbiton, so you are in an area, the Bay of Plenty, is very familiar to me. Kiwi from Virginia.
I've been to Hobbiton! definitely worth a trip, it was amaaaazing :) I'm looking forward to your next video too, I also went to Rotorua during my trip, it was really cool to see lots of geothermal pools

Did a very similar itinerary a long time ago. Got to Hobbiton and there were only 2 other people on my tour, torrential downpour, and the set had been mostly torn down. After filming LOTR they began tearing down the sets, but the owners of the farm stopped them before they could get it all out of there. Bag End was just the front plywood facade and it was a working sheep farm. We hid in there with about 10 sheep waiting for the rains to stop.
Then I had a choice, either go to Rotorua or Taupo, and I chose Taupo (made it to Roto later in the trip).
Oh no way! That's pretty much unheard of these days for there to be so few people there - although it sounds like the weather had something to do with that! Glad you still managed to get to Rotorua, sounds like an awesome trip.

I’m only just catching up with your Camper van vlogs , as we have been renovating our hallway . Hope your pain is easing Dane . Capsicum cream is very good for my fibro pain but also if you like chillies 🌶 or peppers , incorporating them into your food releases endorphins which alleviate pain. I’m sure you clever people already know this , not patronising just trying to help as I live in pain 24 \ 7 . Loving the vlogs you two xx

It made me so sad when I realized that there wasnt any hotel/guesthouse/bed and breakfast in Hobbiton. That would have made a trip there even more complete

We hired the exact same motorhome last August when we ‘did’ north island (from U.K.). We loved our trip so, so much. We visited Hobbiton of course! I too had never seen the films but thought the set was amazing!! Loving your vlogs as they remind me so much of our trip. We’ll be back!!

There you are on the other side of the world from England visiting a set based on the ideas of JRR Tolkein who spent his childhood in my home county of Worcestershire 😀 I preferred the books to the movies but that set does capture the spirit of The Shire. Diesel does pump slower because it froths up if pumped too fast. There's today's useless anecdote 😂 Loving these videos of travels with Aston 👍👍

This brought back so many memories form the time I had been to New Zealand
It was truly an awesome time, but I wasn't able to explore a lot so I'm eagerly waiting for things to get normal and that I could travel again.
I was also wondering how many days it took y'all to complete the whole tour

We are currently planning a winter road trip from north to south this July!! Absolutely loving your vlog, I’m just wondering did you sign up to top 10 holiday park membership? (Not sure if it’s worth it or not)

We did sign up and it is worth it, but only if you will stay in the parks of course. In some places Top 10 aren't the best, so you need to check in advance where you will stop and if they're good. This first season of Reveal NZ was July August

Haha just a cheeky 18 hour walk! Yaaay so happy you're enjoying it. We're not 100% sure how it happened but it looks like he fractured it a while ago and its since broken away. He's got more tests coming up soon so we're hoping we find out more then!

@@DanegerAndStacey (as we’re only up to episode 4, I don’t know if you’ve done any of these but here goes.....and some for next time as well.). The drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy offers stunning scenery and of course at the end you’re able to take the obligatory, insta-worthy shot at the Glenorchy shed. A Skippers Canyon tour from Queenstown is fun (just make sure you sit on the correct side of the vehicle to get maximum impact). An Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise or even just a wander around the quaint little French village. You also must experience a traditional Hangi dinner in Rotorua and how about walking up the steepest street in the world - Baldwin Street in Dunedin. We fell in love with New Zealand back in 2017 on our first trip and then returned in 2018 to experience more of Queenstown and it’s surrounds. We’re now confined to our State of New South Wales so until borders are open and travel restrictions are eased, it’s up to you guys to keep your New Zealand loving cousins across the ditch satisfied :-) which you are doing in spades!! Good question! I like most movies, comedies are my favourite but I'm really not into sci-fi or anything that's super unrealistic.
As someone that grew up in both Rotorua and Auckland,it pains me to see the price of getting into Hobbiton,seems very excessive,for that, i would expect to see some small Hobbit type people acting out scenes there,and STILL!!!! so many one lane bridges,the hell is it with the one way bridges,still?. Watching other van lifers driving around NZ,95% of them comment on the one lane bridges,can't get my head around that one. . ..carry on.;-)
The fact that you get transport, a guide and booze included definitely helps justify the price but we hear ya, most things in NZ are expenny!

There are some amazing hot pools Waitangi Soda Springs bout 35-45mins east of Rotorua (Rotoma) all natural and not overly priced.
There are also heaps of marae around Rotorua, can’t go in but can view from the rd...

Don’t bother with the movies...read the books! I have watched the movies and enjoyed them for what they were in their own genre, but the books are something else.
Read the boooooksss.... that will literally take me 5 years 😂haha kidding, I know what you mean. There's something special about reading a book vs being spoon fed someone elses vision through a movie.
