My artist also charges a design fee that acts as a non-refundable deposit and it gets subtracted from the total cost of the tattoo in the end. I think that’s fair imo and also safeguards the artist’s time and creative design so they get compensated in case the client flakes out.

    • @gilbertoflores7397
      @gilbertoflores7397 Год назад +15

The issue with that was, in this case, the design fee, the consultation, and deposit were not deducted from the actual cost of the tattoo. The artist would then charge a day rate for multiple thousands and likely not do a full day's work, so she could milk another full day of expenses out of the client.

6:36 200$ for this service seems completely reasonable to me. If I were commissioning a digital artist I for a fully rendered color peice with a sketching phase where I can ask for modifications during the process. Being an artist takes time skill and effort it’s not as easy as people seem to think it is I mean yes everyone CAN be an artist and make art but when you want good work especially with a medium as difficult as ink on skin it does cost something, but the way he explains it and treats her is what’s important there’s a middle ground between getting paid for your hard work and effort as an artist and not billing people ridiculous amounts of money for subpar sketches or appointments that you may have to move or change in the future. There’s always a happy medium and I’m so glad Matt showed her and the whole internet exactly where that happy medium lands. Like yes as an artist your time is money but you aren’t above anyone else just because a client is paying you to make something for them doesn’t make you above them if they don’t like the design they can ask for any changes to that design that they want it’s their body and skin that’s permanently imprinted onto the audacity of making someone pay extra to tweak a design is what’s wrong with the initial tattooist that’s putting your time above the person who has to live with this art forever and that’s just not right morally. The design I made for my spouse needed some reworking and our tattoo artist happily just tweaked it and kept going like a professional, it took her maybe 10-15 minutes to tweak and print the stencil and she had no problem doing it and she didn’t charge us anything for the tweaks we asked for.

Edited to add: I also love Matt’s personal reasons for doing this, as a recovering addict myself. Addiction makes you incredibly selfish, and once you’re sober, you really want to make up for lost time, & help others in all the ways you couldn’t before.

SO, I feel like if an artist is taking time to sit down and create a design in their free time, they should feel comfortable asking to be compensated. Maybe I am wrong, I am not familiar with this stuff, but it seems logical to me. Also, do tattoo artists get benefits (like health insurance) from the shops they work at ever? Just curious.

As someone who is a recovering addict, I know how _incredibly_ empowering it feels to be able to do something good for other people. To be the one that others can rely on. I never stole or cheated during my addiction and I don't feel like I was a bad person, but I was sometimes quite selfish out of pure necessity and I kept myself detached cause I felt like my mere existence was a burden (even before the drugs). It's hard to put other people first when you are struggling to keep yourself afloat day by day, just get to that next fix so you feel like you can function thru all the pain. When you are able to free yourself of that suffocating substance, the real work begins. In my experience, an important part of the process is finding your strength by helping others (and you have to be strong to survive whatever drove you to addiction and then the addiction itself, so it is there - you are far from weak!). And I'm not talking about 12 steps or something, just the logical process of finding your footing again and building your self esteem and image from the ground up. Trusting others and having others trust you is so crucial. I'm not religious so I don't agree with the whole "you have to give yourself to a higher power and admit you're powerless by yourself to recover" or whatever - if it works for some, then awesome, but I approach recovery from a very logical, humanistic point of view.

I got my first Tattoo the day before my 19th Birthday.
It was last minute but I was already there with a friend who was having work done on her first big piece. I decided to get something done myself and asked the artist for a bird holding a rose on my left shoulder. I took his services as he was already working with my friend and her tattoos looked pretty awesome.
Once he finished my friend's first session, he quoted me for my bird and said it was $60 for black and white (Basically just a stencil) & $90 for color (More Detailed). I take the black and white for $60 as I was 19 and didn't really have that much money on me.
He said that was fine so I sit down and he starts.
Midway through as I feel him shading my tattoo, I stop and ask, are you shading it in black or white? I'm confused as I was under the impression it was to be a stencil basically, and he agreed there would be no color. To which my friend responded, "Oh, it's Blue!?" I stayed calm and the guy stopped tattooing immediately. He then said, "Oh, did you not want your bird colored blue?" I told him No, as that is not what we had agreed on. He insisted and said "Oh, well. I guess you're getting a Blue Bird." AND CONTINUED TO SHADE IT. Thankfully, my friend's mom was there and saw the whole thing happen and backed me up as I told him I never agreed to have it colored let alone have it be a Bluebird. I ended up only paying the $60 as he did admit he just was not paying attention to what I had asked for. That experience really did a number on me! I'm 26 now and I OBVIOUSLY still have the bird tattooed on my shoulder. Eventually, it grew on me and I learned to love it. However, this was my body, my skin, something that was going to be permanent on me. To put my trust in someone just for them to flat-out say they just "Weren't paying attention" during our consultation is absolutely ridiculous. LIKE WE WERE FACE - TO - FACE and he looked me in the eyes and just was not paying attention? After that I haven't dared to even think about getting another one done, however, seeing what Matt did for Courtney, honestly, it's giving me hope that it might have just been a really shitty artist that I, unfortunately, ran into. I'm really glad I got to see Courtney's Journey and it all worked out for her in the end!!! It feels like I got closure some how to my own experience even though they were both entirely different!! It definitely made me want to try getting tattooed again by someone I can communicate well with. Thanks for covering this Celle! :)

There are good artists out there. I got my tattoo after going to an open house in Seoul. I looked at the artist’s work and liked it. I talked with him about what I was looking for, a rendering of my pet snail who passed. He asked me to email him pictures I had taken and any from the internet that would better show the color pattern I was looking for as my phone pics weren’t the most detailed. It was important to me that the eye stalks be extended as my Baeng had been a curious little snail. On the day of the tattoo, the artist showed what he had drawn up. It was perfect. I wanted it on my shoulder. The artist placed it so Baeng’s eye stalks were looking over my shoulder. It was amazing. The colors were super vibrant. That was almost 20 years ago, so does need a touch up. I might see about that when I get another snail on the other shoulder. That one will be an exact copy of the one my niece drew for my in zentangle style when she was 14. I want the imperfections and line jumps she made included.

Honestly in my opinion, when I choose a tattooist, usually they do the kind of style I like, so I have faith they can do the discussed tattoo, I don’t expect a rendered sketch before hand.
I’ve turned up for tattoos and asked them to adjust slightly, I had a unjcorn and asked for bigger eyes and some eyelashes and more fabulous hair, and he said, you know what I agree with that once he made the changes.
I always pay a non refundable deposit. And often the first hour rate is perfecting everything.
    That’s just my experience

🫂 good on matt for healing from his illness, and how gentle and understanding he was during their consultation
flowers to courtney for staying strong throughout this entire debacle, for sitting through that tattoo in one session, and propping up other phenomenal artists who were offering to do the same for her

Matt killed that tattoo. So glad someone of his caliber stepped up and showed that it’s not uncommon for an artist especially with larger pieces do have a fee or at least a small deposit to map out and design the work ahead of time.
I’m probably not alone but I feel more comfortable with a small deposit or design fee of 1-3 bills rather than half the cost of the finished work that in the end may be 1500-3000 or more spent over multiple 4-6-10 hour sessions because.

  • @DieAlteistwiederda

Design fees do make sense to me as someone who is friends with a lot of artists. Drawing takes a lot of time and so does the planning and stuff like this and of course usually you draw a sketch and then send your client updates in between so they can give you feedback and you can make changed before the finished product. You also pay for the experience someone has and the customer service.
Knowing all of this I'm not against tattoo artists already charging for that part of the process because for body art this is probably even more important because it's on your skin forever. You have to really like this because you can't just take it off when you don't vibe with it anymore.
The lady involved in tattoo gate was just charging a ridiculous amount and was treating her customer like trash or just a cash cow.

i think design fees should be expected considering it’s essentially just the commission price for making the artwork itself, it doesn’t make sense for it to be free. that way if the tattoo never happens the artist is still compensated for the work they did

The design fee is always a regular thing, usually works like a deposit. I've sent in images that show what I want and I'll usually see the final design at the scheduled appointment and we can make tweaks and changes then. I've never had a bad experience getting tattooed so goes to show that there's a ton of great and respectable artists out there, it's just about finding someone who works for you and who you feel comfortable with.

design fee is the same issue just with a different added fee name... if you are scared that someone is going to steal your artwork and get it cheaper then you should deduct that out of the whole price but upfront of what the person will have to pay for as quoted after they get the tattoo... The drawing portion is a completely integral part of getting a tattoo it cannot be separated from getting a tattoo.... so to split something into different price catagories for one outcome of getting a tattoo is still really stupid and is not normal for tattoos... now yes people are trying this and they can do whatever they want but its not a normal tattoo step as it was

I had a friend once ask me to design her two tattoos, one with hydrangea and angel wings , and one calligraphy of what she called her grandmother. I thought we were good friends, but when i sent her ig what looked like the most finished version, asked if she had any notes (as id already done a couple times) she said no and that she loved it so much and how perfect it is, i asked when she was wanting to meet up and trade the designs for the money/weed we'd agreed on before i even started - she ghosted. I lost a good friend , and a lot of self worth when that happened. Im not a tattoo artist so i knew the plan was for her to take the designs to one, but we'd agreed on either 100$ or 100$ worth in weed (cause it was before it was legal and she had a plug) but she did neither , and for all i know she still got the tattoo. I was told it would cost more to pursue action than i was owed so i had to just kind of swallow it. It never stopped stinging.

If you watch the consolation video they did, she specifically says she wants as little back as possible, primarily pastel colors and minimal outline of the flowers. She got exactly what she wanted to get. Matt offered a bit more neo traditional elements, but she was hesitant to do it. If you watch that video, you can see he did exactly as she asked.

This extra hour was FREE I was over joyed with the result before but seeing the final product.. oh my god it made me cry I´m so happy with it.

I like his approach on a design fee, especially when you get a complete design with colours and shading etc. My artist shows me a sketch like basically outlines and the details and shading and stuff comes when he tattoos it. Not to say that its not work to do a sketch/outline design but its more reasonsble to integrate the price of it into the tattoo price, because most of the design and detail work is done while tattooing.
His designs on the other hand are complete and if he wouldnt charge a fee, people could just steal the whole thing including details and all. 200 bucks is a good and reasonable price as well. 😊
