      I don't know if blast is the right word, but if there is good evidence that the facts of the case are as stated in the video, I think it's reasonable to name the artist. And given that the artist seems confident that she has acted in a reasonable and fair manner, presumably she shouldn't have an issue with being named given that people generally prefer to go to a tattoo artist who acts reasonably and fairly in their business.

    Something I wanted to talk about: the tattoo market place has changed, and it’s in a terrible bubble that is close to popping. My husband was a tattooer for 15 years (licensed, in a shop, not a scratcher) and he decided to make a career change a year ago. Best decision he ever made. Beware tattooers that are overly heavy on social media, and I don’t care if I get hate for this. Beware tattooers that bad mouth their clients on social media ESPECIALLY TikTok. Beware a tattooer with a consultation fee (that’s not real). The cost of the drawing should ALWAYS be a part of the final price of the design. I’ve seen my husband work all night on a drawing and the client didn’t like it, and he fixed it no charge. It’s just how it works. If this is upsetting for a tattooer, then don’t tattoo. I’ve noticed tattooers becoming straight up @ssholes because of social media.

      Yuppp--crazy how many tattoo artists get to 50k followers by turning tattooing into a lifestyle blog for the rich and famous. You have people that have been in the industry for 30 years cranking out large and wildly technical tattoos for $650, and then people that have only been tattooing for 2 years charging $1500 for a palm sized design that's gonna look like shit after just 1 year.

    • @Dark_Red_Echo
      @Dark_Red_Echo 11 месяцев назад +5

      Agreed. I’ve been getting tattoos since I was 14, I have my face done, full sleeves, etc, I’ve never been charged for a drawing and I’ve never been charged more than $100 for a deposit. I have a ton of friends who are artists and they’ve never charged money like this for consultation, etc.
      I honestly feel like some of this goes back into this sort of pretentious “too cool for you” culture that’s always been part of tattooing to some extent, but that’s been made way worse by social media inflating peoples’ egos. I’ve heard about outrageous stuff like this happening mostly to younger folks trying to get their first tattoo or people who artists may not realize have gotten them before that because they are not visible when you walk in the shop. Essentially, if you look like you might be new to tattoo culture, some people are assholes and will try to take advantage.
      It’s definitely a bubble that’s going to pop-I guess some of these scam artists better make their money while they can, because once it goes they probably will never get work again because of the way they treated people and the reputation they made for themselves.

    She would’ve lost me at “consultation fee” but I had a similar situation happen years ago at a hair salon.
    After college, when I had my first decently paying full-time job, I wanted to dye my hair in an actual salon instead of in my bathroom with manic panic. I went to a few salons until I found one I liked. The stylist gave me an estimate based on her day rate and the products she would need. I was taking my long, naturally black hair as light as possible, so there were multiple processes involved, and I was prepared to pay her proposed rate and then some, as well as a tip.
    When the day came around, the stylist didn’t mention anything about a price increase until I was at the register before leaving. She asked for more than 4x the quote we had agreed upon. I remember the feeling of my entire heart sinking into my stomach - it was more than my rent and all my living expenses combined. I had never gone to a decent salon to get my hair done, so I panicked and paid what she asked for, but I was crying because I didn’t know how I was going to pay my rent or even buy groceries for the next month.
    I imagine these clients experienced something similar. At the time I had no one in my life to explain how much things were supposed to cost or what to do if someone who has provided a service is demanding more than you agreed to pay. I find that as women, we’re socialized to avoid confrontation so we’re less likely to refute this type of behavior. Auto mechanics take advantage of women all the time for this reason.
    I wish we learned more about personal finances and business basics in school. Imagine if the thousands of dollars this ‘artist’ scammed out of people went to genuine, passionate tattoo artists who want to provide a great experience and beautiful art for their clients?

The plaintiffs can show the website FAQ for 50% deposit, how much they have paid to this person (ie the wire transfers) they do have solid grounds for bringing it to a small claims court for being overcharged. Even if the plaintiff lost if they, the artist would have to show up to court for every single one of these cases, which means a few less people being scammed for those days. For the person who showed that she had sent the different reference photos she can pretty clearly show that what she was asking for did not match what the artist created, which means the artist did not fulfill the contract and they were not entitled to compensation.
      Though note: if these people reside in different countries or if they're in the US the states is does make it far more difficult to pursue legal recourse.

    I'm a tattoo artist and I am so blown away by the treatment this woman got. There's nothing normal about this. I fully understand not wanting to do unpaid work, but charging this amount for a rough sketch is absolutely ludicrous. I usually do a rough sketch prior to the appointment, but I don't charge extra for that, unless the client wants a full-finished drawing, but even then I charge nowhere near this much.
    This is scammy and backhanded and this person deserves the backlash.

    As a tattoo artist myself, I can’t even consider charging for a consultation, let alone any of the other fees, aside from a deposit (WHICH 100% SHOULD GO TOWARD THE COST OF THE TATTOO). My consultations are not just for me to figure out what I’m going to design for my potential client, but for them to see if they are sure they want me as their artist, which THEN we discuss the deposit. My deposit is me confirming with them that I will be working with them drawing their design and making adjustments to it as needed until we finalize a design we both like, and then proceed to book the appointment, at no extra cost, once the design is finalized. The deposit is non refundable solely for the reason that if they decide to take my design to someone cheaper, at least I got some compensation for my time and effort. It’s a lot more work on my end, but my goal is to do some awesome art on people

    • @elenalizabeth
      @elenalizabeth Год назад +8

      Exactly! And this is how it should be. This “artist” is just dodgy all around.
      A consultation fee is ridiculous (especially when they clearly didn’t discuss what she actually wanted as the sketch is so wrong) because consults are the time when the artist can say “I don’t think I can do this piece for XYZ reason”, or when the client has had a look at more of the artists work and realised they are wanting a different style, or when the client realises it’s going to be more time/money than they can afford to get done, etc.
      And I agree that deposits are important and should be non-refundable for if the client just doesn’t show up or cancels last minute etc, but that that deposit fee should also go on the tattoo cost.
      I would even agree with charging a drawing fee for complex pieces, because I’ve seen my friend design one that took her 4 hours to look how she wanted it to and she only charges a $10hr design fee. But a $1700 fee is just ridiculous (especially for a sketch that looks like a high school art student scribbled it into their sketchbook whilst bored)
      What this “artist” has done is just scamming her client and then doxxing her online when she was called out on her shitty business practices.

    It’s ridiculous to ask for thousands of dollars beforehand when it’s not even deductible from the actual price of the tattoo. I feel like a design fee itself is kinda weird because that’s what a deposit is for. The most I’ve paid for a deposit was $200 and that was deducted from the tattoo price. Watch out people!

    I had a similar story. I once went to an tattoo artist to sketch and tattoo it. I told him several times via DM , that I can't really sketch it but I want two little birds each representing Yin and Yang. I send him 2 pictures, one with Koi Fish and said that I want it like that style but with birds. I had to pay 50 Euro in advance to even get appointment, so he can be sure I will arrive. The appointment was done about 2 months ahead at that time. I asked him if he will sketch it and send me some first impressions, so we can work on it to get it as I please (since I paid a fee and told him all necessary details about it). He only told me that we make it on the appointment. Not really what I expected but ok.
    Fast forward on the appointment and he was late around 30 minutes. No problem for me, since I had time that day, but thought he would make it up by exceeding the appointment. When I went there he didn't know what I wanted, he thought I just wanted the sent Koi Picture on my arm (I wanted it on my leg). Then I had to tell him everything again. He wanted to push his style and since I wasn't 100% happy he told me 30 min into the appointment, that I really don't want it and he won't tattoo it like I wanted it to be because it's his art etc. He became very rude, telling me it's about him and his work and not how I want it. He even called it his art, but he did nothing but wanted to tattoo other peoples work out of Pinterest. We couldn't agree on it that day, at that point I wasn't comfortable at all. He told me I should contact him again "if I am really sure what I want". I texted him later, that I don't really feel comfortable with him and that our views are very different at that point, but thanked him for his time; I was very polite, though he was really an asshole. I asked him about the fee and he told me he won't return it since it was his working time without achieve anything. I said fine (even though I wasn't) but asked for the sketch we worked on.
    Then he really wanted a total of 160 Euros for the sketch he literally took out of Pinterest, because his hour wage is 160 and we worked one hour on it. First of all, we worked 30 minutes on it, since he came late and didn't exceed the appointment. Then he didn't even know what I wanted 2 months prior, having the audacity to even call out on my taste and how "Yin and Yang are only Fish and can't be anything other than this". Also he told me when I approached him with my request, that he would do it like I told him and that's fine for him. If he would told me right on he only tattoo his style and nothing else, that would make it much more clear about the outcome. But he rather choose to be rude, ignored me even when his guy friend showed him some videos. Lastly, the 50 Euro fee was just an "arrival fee", I would get it back when I come to the appointment.
    Nope. I didn't.
    After that I wanted to speak with his chef (like a karen lol), but I didn't had the time for it since it was further away. It's been half a year, I am still frustrated at the money but at least now I know how to approach another artist again.

    Some tattoo artists have really fallen into the celebrity cult trough. I had a renowned tattoo artist work on me a few years ago - long story short, she mismanaged her time and didn't colour her sketch in that i agreed to, so we talked about the colours at the day of the appointment and i told her clearly what i did and didn't want. She then proceeded to completelt disregard my opinion and tattooed colours i explicitly refused. Then she refused to refund the money unless i came to the shop in person, she wouldn't let my husband come and pick it up for me. I was terrified of going back because she was so aggressive and mean so i lost out on 700 bucks. After i posted about it on a fb group for modded people, she proceeded to send her stans to harrass and threaten me with violence. Yikes.

    Happened to me once but to a lesser degree. Booked an appointment with an artist who was recommended to me by a friend. He was an hour and 40 minute drive from me but I had seen his work and thought he would be a good fit for my piece. Drove there for the consultation, gave references, told him I wanted it on my inner forearm, and filled out a little consultation sheet, gave a $150 deposit/drawing fee & set an appointment. Appointment day comes, I drive over an hour only to get a call from him that he had to cancel. I was upset, but we booked another day. That second appointment comes around, I didn’t hear from him at all but I drove ANOTHER 1 & 40 min to get there only for him to show me a design that WAS NOTHING like we agreed on! AND he designed it for the middle of my back! I was young and unsure of how to act in that situation but I was on the verge of tears. I was polite and said that’s not what we agreed to.. and showed him my references again.. told him it was going on my arm… he said if you don’t want this tattoo than I don’t know what to tell you. He wouldn’t redesign it, or even resize it, and said my deposit wasn’t refundable because he had already drawn something up. (I got the vibe he never drew me anything, and last minute showed me a design he already used for someone else cause it was NOTHING like what I wanted.) I lost the deposit, a bunch of money in gas, and my time! I felt so disappointed and ripped off. It was really sad. Ps. my friends tattoo from him got really messy over time and had lines blow out.. so I guess it was for the best, but it was an unfortunate interaction to have with someone I was really excited to get work from. Shame.

    Everything needs to be in writing even if it's done over the phone or in person! If I make another appointment after I just finished getting tattooed, my artist will send me an email after confirming everything said in person including my deposit and cost. She also will typically do three stencils but will always quote for the largest of the three so you are not surprised by a bigger cost if you choose the largest sized.
