Thanks for the review, great as always!
A paid review is not a review
A MUX switch is a fantastic feature and testing/revealing performance when not utilizing dedicated GPU performance was a shame.
Try enabling it and using Fast-Sync in the Nvidia control panel. You’ll enjoy gaming on that 60hz panel like you never have before 👍
Fancy seeing you here bob
We tested out-of-box. A MUX switch is a fantastic feature if you actually use it but 99% of end users couldn't be bothered by manually switching between IGP & discrete depending on workload. Not having the option to go fully automatic is extremely short-sighted on Lenovo's part. As for fast-sync, it has some VERY severe limitations when it come to framerates & its limited to DX9 - 11 games.
Ah great!!! I always run full dedicated gpu, and running a 60hz panel so ty for letting me know about Fast-Sync Bob:D!!
Speedylord Inc. Boom!
@@HardwareCanucks If gamers actually understood more about a mux switch, people would definitely be bothered to switch to it. People that have it generally use it because of g sync but it's still a significant performance boost in most games.
Go watch jarrod's tech video about fps difference with one vs without one. There's an average of 15% fps boost on average when he tested 15 games since there's no bottleneck from the iGPU. Something desktop gamers have that no one notices. There's also significantly higher 1% lows for fps.
Bob is spot on here and one of the few who realizes the benefit of this. If you guys actually did some proper tests you'd understand the benefit of it 😒😑. EVERY gaming laptop needs one in my opinion.
Your intros, guys, wow. Fascinating
I've had the Y530 since October of last year and so far, it's been one of the best gaming laptops I've ever had. It's almost like it's part ThinkPad, part gaming laptop. I could only assume that the newer Y540 would be the same.
IMO, watching Eber fumble through the different Legion model numbers was almost the best thing about this video! 😁
the design actually looks very good like for real... for a bit of a more mainstream design tho. the design on y540/30 is also very good, and yeah the hinge and everything it really is a sleek looking laptop
Things lenovo should improve on: Battery life, charging brick.
Ronald Chow next year it’s going to be USBC charging with much smaller charging brick with better battery life. They hit some good sale marks for the legion this year, so next year it will probably happen.
A gaming PC usually doesn't have much battery.
I bought it to use as a pc got the most high end spec except for storage and ram 512gb ssd 16gb ram really good sale normally 1500 and the sale makes it 1000 with 2060, i7 really good cheep laptop with a 2060 and i7
Also the y545 (which I have) has a bit of a heating problem. But it’s still pretty decent
It has bad battery because its running the discrete graphics from the factory. You should enable optimus in the bios.
cool vid but I'd much like to see the x1 carbon in your future review library!
I also prefer the design of the Y540/Y740... Then again, the entire Legion laptops line has a flaw: Battery life. I hope next-gen design comes with two M.2 slots and a bigger battery... skipping the 2.5-inch drive.
I prefer the design of this one over the other one. It looks a lot nicer while still being understated. It doesn't look like a teenager's gaming computer, it looks like a sleek yet beefy laptop. It's the best non-Razer looking gaming laptop out there. The other one is good too, but too boxy.
Lenovo review sponsored by Razer laptop 🤣
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Came back to this video to say, that after a year of using it as my main device, the left fan motor started having issues. Make sure to constantly clean out the dust from the device.
Hey man great video! Quick question. I’m doing a lot of color grading on the y545 and I’m getting a lot of issues with reproduction. What color settings are you using?
Im crying in broke after watching the sponsor stealth 😭
1:12 - Anyone else notice that fly on the back of the laptop? Totally thought it was on my screen at the time 😂
Would much rather prefer the dedicated button using the GPU-based shadowplay instead to record since there can be corruption/frame dropping issues with the game bar.
Shadow has a dedicated button. Called Alt+F9
@@TheRealCatof again, with the implementation of a button for recording, it would be nicer to use an already on-board program which doesn't have the possibility to corrupt footage and cause frame issues and at the very least be re-programmable (although I don't know if it is or isn't able to be reprogrammed)
Nice I might pick this up for traveling to my friends and uncles place next year saw it at a local costco store and the price is just perfect for 144hz on the go. :)
Ordered mine from Costco at 999.00 with 1660 TI, 500 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD, IT 9th gen, 144 hx IPS FHD 15.6 display, 16GB DDR4 2666hx Ram
@@Waddelle1 steal!
Hey my friend have that gaming laptop. My question is can you stream on that laptop
Dave2D mentioned the difference in the heat pipe length which bends around the fan in Y540 with exhaust from the sides and the back. That could be another reason for the poor thermal performance.
Only thing we want change from Gen 1 to Gen 2, It's all we need!
Is there a larger capacity battery upgrade for this laptop to improve battery life?
Shall I wait for Y550 coming in 2020 as u metioned in your Legion 2020 video.
I needed a new laptop to do programming on. Picked this up with the same specs as your review model except the 144hz display for $1000 on sale at Costco about a month ago. For my case, this laptop is a steal as I cant expect to get similar performance for around the same money and still have the option to game every now and then. If I'm at home I never use it to game anyway since I have my rig so the thermal performance in gaming doesn't bother me one bit since it will rarely see gaming.
If however I was using this as a dedicated machine, I would be curious to know how thermals could improve if you use a laptop cooler. I used to have one of those Cooler Master ones with like a 180mm fan, and that used to help significantly but this was years ago so I dont know if they are still relevant.
Also thanks for the tip on how to turn on discrete graphics. Will definitely change that up right now.
I just bought a cooling pad for my y540 and its a significant difference. Doesn't go over 90 degrees while on ultra settings in Metro Exodus
I bought this yesterday before looking for reviews. I run almost exclusively Steam games. This is a problem since all the games I play, 7 days to die, Conan Exiles, The Forest will not load. Conan starts to load but locks up just before the game runs. Wish i would have known my 6th Gen I5 was a better processor. Buyer Be Ware!
Timothy Lakin Sounds like a driver problem.
can you guy review Zenbook Flip 13 UX362? that looks like a great laptop
That keyboard on the right looks dope...
Isn’t this chassis the same as the y7000 that came out during the same time as the y530 and y730?
thats nuts fix that fan issue you noticed that is what id tell lenovo, also going all ssd would help in a few ways like battery life!
Pre-Notification Gang Gang, great video
Record_Needle commented 5 minutes ago, the video released 4 minutes ago :o
😂 i might go to hell for this but i read it as ‘pre-notification GANG BANG’
I always thought that temps only mattered when it throttled? If it isn't throttling then you're not losing performance, therfore it could be even hotter/faster than its current settings
Cooler temps can keep the performance as high as it should be for a longer period of time. By that I mean years, not minutes or hours. It's called hardware degradation
Can you make a video about the ' Fidelio X2 Philps'?
What's that keyboard?
will it work if you swap the ssd and intall a fresh system
Wasn't this the Lenovo Y7000 chassis they introduced last year along with the y530 and y730? I remember I saw the y7000 pop up in some CES coverage ( and it looks exactly the same as the y545 ) but ultimately I feel like it couldn't live up to what the y530 and y730 were offering
Hi, what is the boot driver, the hdd or sdd?
I hate that RUclips now plays 2 ads at the beginning of videos
EBER, What is that watch on your hand ?
Lenovo legion review. sponsored by razer. I have this laptop and honestly, it is the best.
What software you use to measure the temperature
How hot does it get when just web browsing? Is it comfortable on your lap?
i have it and does not get that hot .. and it is so comfortable on your leg .. and i used to play heave games on this lap .. and no problems at alll .. for that money .. it is a great one
You realise the thermals are that hot cause it's hitting 4.2 ghz as you said, and none of the others with a 9750H do that, some not even close. That's why. You should have tried undervolting and power limiting it to around 3.8ghz and i bet it would be in line with all the others.
Teddy M i want to know this before buying y545
a request Dimitri, do a best gaming earbuds video for pc. u have so many headset video, but need a earbuds video. that will help a lot of us. and thanks for all the videos and infos.
Um gaming earbuds? You use headphones for a reason
You should take a look at the new Lenovo Legion Y27gq! It’s the first 1440p 240hz monitor ever :)
woah i didnt even hear about that one! hope they see this comment soon
No use in a laptop. For that. Better a good screen than high refresh rates...
With Style if your making videos then I agree, but if you are looking for gaming then I can’t agree
No it isn’t, look at the BenQ PD2500Q
Ollie Payne I looked it up and it’s a 1440p IPS 60hz monitor. Not 240hz
This Y545 just a small reachback for the y400(2014/15) series at desing side.
Does the keyboard have lights aswell
Wait is this the alienware R4 case design? Re skinned?
50 dBA
it is very good
I think the Omen 15 is a much better buy when comparing it with the Y545. it has more storage, support thunderbolt 3, SD card reader, and the other specs are pretty much the same.
And rtx 2060 for 1199$ in microcenter
Which is better. The L340 or the y545?
The cooling in y540 is better than that of y545. So i suggest people to go after y540 . You can also look upto dave lee for further information.
what amperage of the usb 3.1 output?
can we get a review of the lenovo l340 gaming laptop
Hi guys , ı want to change ssd for y545
Which should ı choose
M2 nvme ?
Please review the AMD variants
Lenovo y545 or Acer helios 300 which one I would prefer
Can we change the GPU of Y540? The one I ordered has the 1650 graphic card.
Also, which RAM does it come with? Brandwise? Corsair?
Sadly you can’t change they gpu in almost all laptops including the y540. Maybe you can return it and get it with the 1660ti unless you don’t plan to game on your laptop.
Does it have a Backlit keyboard
Gotta undervolt! I Undervolted my Y545 and the CPUs temp went from 90c to averaging about 65c to 70c. Its been great! Average about 100fps on rust with ultra.
How many voltages did you undervolt sir?
I have a low computer IQ. Can someone like me with zero experience and low ability to understand tech undervolt?
Rtx laptop worth it or not?
Hi...Y545 is now available with RTX2660 / 512 GB SDD /i7 9thgen /16GB RAM /144FPS for $1100 at Walmart deal...is it worth buying. How the long run use of the laptop? any issues?
144 fps? Where?
Rtx 2660, have they announced new gpu for their laptop?
Have you tried using the Intel utility to undervolt and bumped the cpu down? Basically required on my razer 17im gtx 1080
I undervolted went from 90c to 70c
@@takisbrusett2753 how about the gaming perfomance , is it good enough after undervolted?
is it colder than y540 in games?
Perhaps this is a "S" iteration of Y540, hence Y545
Please do some undervolting with Intels XTU and report on the results. Would be very interesting to see the CPU temps.
I did have the chance the undervolt it. But the temperature still isn't ideal and tops at around 85° (-0.130)
can someone explain to me how he got those frame rates with a 60hz panel? its alittle confusing to me
You dont need a high refresh rate display to reach high frame rates lol
If you undervolt the cpu temps and speed should be better
you think y545 a good laptop for video editing????
You should check out Mobile tech review of this laptop. I actually like the one with the Y, the other one is too bland.
Which is better the Y530 or the Y540? Performance wise and overall value.
I returned mine due to an app or two not working. Couldn't game because of it getting too hot. it's fine but you need a/c to run this thing. It can multi task like a boss as long as it's cool.
I found propping up the back of the laptop on some bottle caps (specifically 2 bawls guarana bottlecaps) significantly lowers core temps on both the CPU and gpu.
For reference, I'm using the walmart special version: 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, no hdd, core i7 9750, rtx 2060 for graphics, and 144hz display. Pulling over 100fps in destiny 2 on highest, dipping into the mid 80s during really action packed sequences.
@@jordanwhitecar1982 is there a slot to add hdd/add in that version?
@@bean_odinson yes, since i posted that i added a 1TB ssd brining my storage to 1.5TB
It's a 2.5" sata
wifi or rj45?
Lenovo : y545
😂😂
bruh, u stoppid lolol
Can u tell me about ntsc and srgb value
i like the design of the wifi 40 more
does the temperature of this laptop will damage the laptop components itself
No
Do the CPU/GPU slow down when working at 98 degrees though?
They do throttle to avoid being damaged
as hot as that gets you'll be buying a new laptop in a few years after this one wears out quicker due to those high thermals
If you get this. Make sure to swap out that Seagate HDD for Western Digital.
Nice notenook!
The 1650 model is $790 right now... it is tentating
The only thing the 1650 is good at.
@@mr.kenway4554 9750H, 16GB Ram. It is not a bad deal TBH
@@UltraDXSASC Well I'm saying in the fact that the 1650 was superceded by the RX570, and the 570 does not have a laptop variant.
sHIT , The 1660ti is $799 right now!!
@@TheAgentAssassin where at????
be the ball!!!
The 9750H/1660ti model was only $750 a few days ago. It's insanely cheap.
For real?
Does the laptop get that hot even in quiet mode?
No, the temperature is fine unless of you are doing some very high level gaming or vr
So thats just mine Y545 that broke twice and 1st time motherboard got on fire and 2nd time its like you are playing on nokia?
I love that case and prefer it to the y540's design with that strange displaced hinge. I just don't get it with it's big assed font spelling out Lenovo on the lid. This y545/y7000 case looks very modern and sci fi to me. This doesn't look gamery at all. It's just a white lenovo logo - or female reproductive system diagram - on the front and no colours.
What the frick does the reproduction system have to do with this
@@nate4561 Ask the person who designed Lenovo's logo. A good designer would have noticed the similarity.
Why not try undervolting it?
Waiting for the Legion BlueTooth40...
Lenovo doesn't like to update hardware drivers.
Update them yourself.
Tried that. Oem drivers are blocking a lot of hardware updates.
@@FitzGeraldGamingJr can confirm, ive got a y530 with a 1060, anytime i update wireless drivers or gpu drivers, something breaks on the laptop and its a head ache to revert and fix
I have a C930 which was released almost a year ago and other than some useless migration software updates, all other last updates were stuck at August 2018 == no bios, no video, no sound update, NOTHING I'm kind of frustrated because there were tons of bluescreen issues for 1809 win update
@@fucingpwnz0rz have you ever had an error code 43 on gpu? I have Y520 with 1060 max q and my graphics drivers arent working. I tried installing both new and old drivers but nothing worked. Any tips?
What is resolution?
1080p looks almost as good as 4k
Im using a Y545 and for me its ok
is anyone else having issues ordering from lenovo? I tried to buy a Y740 but the transaction wasnt accepted and im having issues with my bank now.
You can msg on the customer assistant or order support . 😉 Make sure that is official tho
The complaint about heat seems weak to me...It heat soaked to 98 C....So what? Are implying the chips or capacitors will have a reduced life?... Were are your numbers? No one else has yet demonstrated this is a credible problem below 105 C, you could be the first. Perhaps you implying it over shots then throttles like most laptops to achieve maximum stop and go performance. Again were are you numbers and what is the problem? You never even Userbenched.
What's the difference between non-max Q and max Q gpu
From my understanding, they are just downgraded versions of the GPU to maximize performance:temperature ratio in laptops. Basically a weaker version so it stays cooler.
I got this laptop a few days ago. Loving it, but.... the camera is the worst. No Laptop, ever, should put the camera on a bottom. I have no idea why Lenovo let this happen? did they ever try to use it? I'm really considering returning this laptop and getting MSI from Costco, because of something as small as a useless camera..)
On sale: y545 i7 and rtx 2060 Bam bam Black Friday
Sort of rucksacks do yous be fucking using if something like that may not fit?
Lmao when I looked up reviews before buying there were none, but now that I have it one comes out
Edit: just finished the vid and noticed your point ab thermal performance. Personally it didn’t seem that bad to me, but maybe I’m just not doing as intensive stuff as you were? I’m not running max spec bench marks or anything, but even on high settings most games run smooth and don’t cause too much thermal throttle
Got the $1300 one for $1100 btw, good call on waiting for a sale
Congrats :)
Simon Dominic thanks man
Will I got this laptop for 700$ , but after I Saw this review I'm confused if I should be happy with my purchase or regret it 🤔
just got the 32gb ram
wheres dimitri tho
