Kitchen is the first place we wanted to tackle in our new home. Organizing a kitchen in a functional yet aesthetic way was the objective and we wanted to do it the DIY way. This gave us an opportunity to start our first carpentry project to make open shelves. Though the project is simple, it gave us the necessary confidence to start learning more about woodworking & carpentry.

Truly amazing job. Now you added carpentry too to your repertoire. Choice of glass containers is good but should be extremely careful while handling as cooking involves getting hands greasy.

What a cool idea. Your finished shelves look as good as the ones installed by professionals. I have always wanted open shelving but i hesitate thinking of the dust and grease in the kitchen. But your beautiful shelves are encouraging me to go for atleast some open shelving in the kitchen in our new house. 🙂

Yes, dust and grease in the kitchen are big problems, especially in India and especially in the kitchen, regardless if they are open or full cabinetry they still get a terrible layer of grime added on them without regular cleaning, if you want to still go for it, you could use oil-proof sticker on the shelves to protect them and you can change it once in awhile :)

As a beginner yes, but we loved creating something no matter how simple it was and hopefully months down the line we can look back and say oh that was a piece of cake lol :)

You should totally go for it, we just purchased a Bosch jigsaw cutter and sanding machines, so excited to try and do more now :) it's liberating really to be able to DIY

Wow !! So nice! I was running out of space in my kitchen. This would definitely help. Can you share the measurements of each shelf and how much did they charge for the wood?

All the planks are 6 inch wide but used diff length 2, 3 and 5 ft. We had to buy a full log which was 13 ft long & 6 inch wide, 6 inch depth and cut it into smaller planks, it cost ~6K including sanding, cutting, etc. We used less than half of the planks in the kitchen and have the remaining for other projects.
Love your ideas👌 this wood work looks so simple yet so so convenient, clean, sorted arrangement. how do you plan to take care of the dust that will sit on the shelves
Thank you very much, I use a non-slip mat cut to size on the shelf that I once in few weeks just take down and wash before putting it back :)

Thankyou so much Anita. Yes you're right, handling glass containers in a hot & greasy environment like a kitchen is risky. Have to be very careful with that.

Thank you! Also since the point of the video was the open shelves I only mentioned the cost of creating them... the other items such as the bottle jars, I purchased offline so did not mention prices as they may not match those available online :)

Opening shelves looks soo good in the kitchen! What is the thickness of the wood shelf you’ve made?
They're are 1 inch planks which we got them cut to this size from the wood shop itself
What can u suggest for the opposite wall?
For now I just have one shelf there but the plan is to create a small bar unit that we can wall mount as well :)

I loved the look of the open shelves but difficult to maintain. Within two days dust will settle. Aesthetic but not practical.☺️
As someone who had closed cabinetry, I can assure you dust settles on that as well :) grime too... just that in many cases it is out of sight out of mind lol, this is much much easier to clean as the planks are so much smaller than full cabinets :)

Thanks Ridhi. To create open shelves, I bought wood worth ~Rs 6K (of which more than half is remaining to be used) and other material (angles, screws, varnish, stain, etc) worth ~1.5K. So net net, the project didn't cost more than 5K just for the shelves

Yes over time it will but it is super convenient for me to was the bottles in the dishwasher from time to time... in the past our cabinets over the counter used to get greasy and that was a hassle the dishwasher couldn't solve :P

Awesome and minimal... That pine wood colour itself i felt nice....I don't know originally it look same... i don't like black color counter tops that I too have in my rented apartment.. i really love to south korean kitchen models 🥰.. don't take this much time to put videos 😓😓
Hahah I love Korean aesthetics and design, but got to stay real and raw to what our actual rental spaces look like, this year I want to avoid unnecessary plastic products and wastage, so no astroturf, and also no countertop decal, I don't like how black granite looks either but it's functional so will live with it :) Trying our best to get more regular with the video schedule :)

Open shelving means accumulating dust. Specially for cups and plates etc that don’t have a lid as such. I want to see how often do you have to clean to maintain this.
That is true, so for now we just have regular glasses and cups we use through the day several times so they get washed too often to gather dust... cutlery that is less used is inside the cabinets :)
It's come together well but the dust aspect..🙈🤷♀️. Be careful with glass products, pls do incorporate safe & sturdy desi containers as well..

Heheh everyone is so worried about dust! Truth is dust settles on everything, its more about can you see it versus is it out of sight and so out of mind, I had closed cabinetry in Bangalore and they were a big cleaning hassle for me, the shelves being much smaller, once a week wipe down is a breeze :) and yes super used to handling ceramic/glass products now, but we are still very focused while using them... trying my best to make videos more regular :) considering our wardrobe at the moment is 2 carboard boxes on the floor, making aesthetic and inspiring videos is a bit of stretch even for my imagination lol

Thank you! If you are referring to dust and grime, I have that issue be it open shelf or closed cabinet, this actually is less surface to protect and clean and cleaning glass jars is a piece of cake especially as I put them in the dishwasher so for us it works out very very well :)

hahha I know what you mean, but we try to keep the videos as honest to our real life and effort as possible and unlike our videos in Singapore done in a far more settled state, this is raw, real and honest to our current situation, the videos will slowly evolve along with the house :)
