I'm new to course fishing, I thought you're only supposed to use barbless hooks, unless it's not written in stone. I have been told to use barbless hooks at the lakes I've gone to.
Majority of day ticket lakes are barbless but it's common to use barbed or micro-barbed hooks on natural venues because they are better for keeping live baits like maggots and worm on. Unless the venue rules explicitly state barbless you can use barbed hooks. Check the rules of the venue and if still unsure talk to a bailiff or tackle shop employee. Hope that helps.
