The Psychedelic Masterpiece You May Have Never Heard | The Outsiders - CQ

- The history of rock and roll is filled with albums that didn’t do well when they originally released but later became cult classics. Bands like the Velvet Underground or the Stooges are good examples of that. And many 60s garage bands that were featured on compilations such as "Nuggets", "Pebbles" or "Back from the Grave", are also good examples of that phenomenon. But there are still many albums from the 60s that have never gotten the recognition they deserve. "CQ" by The Outsiders, a psychedelic masterpiece from 1968, is one of those records. The album has been reissued a few times over the years and the album has become a cult classic among many enthusiasts of psychedelia from the 60s. But this album still remains fairly known to many music lovers around the world. In this video, were going to take a look at the history of The Outsiders, and the history of this psychedelic gem called "CQ".
These guys were all over the place - punk, freakbeat, garage, psychedelia and more... And they did it all so damn well, such musical talent! I'm going to seek more of their music out right now and I feel I can't do better! Thank you again, Yesterday's Papers, you're the Guv'ner!
music for bolshevik soundtrack of tyranny
I explained in my comment that for the sake of their completists, they had two double CDs in Holland on the Pseudonym label, Think About Today - Their Complete Works, which contained their complete previously released tracks in Holland, and Everything On Earth, containing their entire previously unreleased tracks from 1966-1968, plus outtakes from their CQ album, their complete live concert, some of which occupied side one of their first album, but those tracks appearing here without overdubbed additional live audience noise. You may be able to get them on imports, or as downloads. I only found the latter on RUclips, better than nothing.

Thanks for sharing ! At 73 years old...there's always more to learn about the music we love ! 🙏😊
I`m 76 😀 and I have all the LPs from ""Back from the Grave". And others. My music
I’m 73 and just discovered this today- WOW! I’m glad I did because these guys are incredible! Or were-still are on their recording- they must’ve influenced many other bands. This why I continue listening mostly to rock of the 60s and 70s - the music scene today seems so bland and derivative by comparison. Looking forward to digging into their catalog!
My dad was friends with Wally at the time. He was a wild guy who lost it later in life to dope and booze. Occasionally he would visit us and i found him pretty dense and daunting. But the Outsiders were one of the best bands to come from my home country
Pebbles, Nuggets, Highs in the Mid Sixties and Teenage Shutdowns just to name a few compilations have introduced me to so many great bands over the years!
@@ModTrash Same here!
Great to see a video about a band from my home country! The Hague was a hotbed for the Dutch rock scene in the 60s and I grew up with a lot of music from that era through my dad who was a teen at the time. Lots of great bands from the time, I can recommend Q65 and Groep 1850 to anyone who’s into the outsiders as well.
Cheers!
A lot of countries such as Holland, Sweden and Australia had their own Rock scene during the mid sixties consisting of bands who were big in their respective countries, but never tried to crack it overseas.
Don't forget Supersister! One of the greatest psych/prog bands ever
Supersister was a few years later from the mid / late Nederbeat freakbeat sound as their 1st LP
Wasn’t released until 1970 although still an amazing group!
Honestly there’s tons of amazing Nederbeat / Nederpop / Netherlands garage punk / freakbeat / psychedelic rock / progressive rock groups from 1960’s to about mid 1970’s
I could do a rundown of all the groups but this message would be ridiculously long…
But in my opinion the greatest Netherlands groups from that time -
Groep 1850 (aka Group 1850)
&
The Outsiders
Some of European hot spots besides Netherlands 🇳🇱 for amazing beat, garage punk, freakbeat, mod, psychedelic rock, psychedelic pop, psychedelic folk, baroque pop, sunshine pop, acid rock, heavy psych, proto-prog, progressive rock, space rock, etc etc -
Germany 🇩🇪 - Krautrock, Kosmische, Progressive Electronic, Berlin School
Sweden 🇸🇪- Svensk beat, Swedish “progg” scene
Denmark 🇩🇰- Danish beat, Danish heavy psych & prog
France 🇫🇷- French chanson, French yéyé, French pop, French rock n roll, French beat, French progressive rock, Zeuhl, avant-prog
Italy 🇮🇹 - Italian beat, Italian progressive rock “Rock Progressivo Italiano”
There’s a ton of great stuff from Norway, Finland, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, former Yugoslavia countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Vojvodina (Serbian autonomous province), Macedonia now known as North Macedonia), Greece, former USSR countries, etc
Even countries such as Albania, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria had some psych / prog groups - not so much in Albania & Moldova - but the latter countries had some great groups such as Transsylvania Phoenix, Sfinx, and Progressiv TM (band moniker inspired from Hungarian progressive rock group Locomotiv GT) from Romania & Shturcite & FSB from Bulgaria
Luxembourg & even the European microstates had a tiny bit of psychedelic action…
The AMAZING
1960’s European psychedelic scene truly comprised the entire continent!!
Indeed ,Q65 , Groep 1850 are my Dutch favourites. Groep 1850 probably the only slightly successful Dutch 'psychedelic' band.
Thanks for "unearthing" another gem I missed 'cause I was a kid living in Mississippi at the time. Thanks for ALL the gems you keep "unearthing!"
this channel is a goldmine!
Thanks!
I picked up a boot of this in 1987. Was so pleased when it got a proper reissue in the 90s. It has consistently been one of my all time favourite albums since then. Misfit is a punk rock monster.
More Rock history preserved. Excellent! !
This is why you YP is the best channel on RUclips - I love that you give so many artists their due recognition, you're doing phenomenal work and thanks a million for putting this one out. Fantastic band!!!
Thank you very much!
You've got to be kidding me. I decided to finally listen to the CQ album last night for the first time and then a video is released about it today. What are the odds, lol.
Crazy!
Synchronicity.
Or your refrigerator 's spying on you
Wow! yeah, I love freaky serendipity stories. There so startling when they happen.
Serendicity*
Brilliant. The Dutch Outsiders are one of my favorite groups. The Cynics and the Lyres have both covered them.
@martinsplichal1581 Well they are not mine. Golden Earring and Earth & Fire are way better than the Outsiders who are nothing but a Pretty Things ripoff.
@@johnpolitis7929 If only anyone asked you.
What an amazing album and had never even heard about it, thanks for bringing it to our attention! Shades of Scream thy last scream era Floyd indeed...
Cheers!
Thanks for another history lesson about a group I have never heard of before… It’s very exciting to discover a treasure trove of new music, but also sad that such a talented group were not supported by the record label, and most do not know who they are.
Thank you for introducing this band to me. I've never heard of them and I'm gonna listen to the album right now.
They never recorded covers. That is very impressive considering even the Beatles released many. Nice job, as usual, YP.
Cheers!
WOW! Thank you for turning me on to this band!, they sound great!, can’t wait to dive in. Even the album cover for CQ looks like a post punk album from the early 80s.
I think you'll love it, brilliant album.
You won't regret it Calvin! Cheers Edwin
@@YesterdaysPapers Miracle Mirror and On The Double by Golden Earring are brilliant albums, not the Outsiders.
@@johnpolitis7929I like those two records a lot, too.
@@YesterdaysPapers And the debut album by Earth & Fire in addition to the other two I like as well.
Barry Hay discovered Jerney Kaagman for the band and even coproduced or cowrote one song for their debut album. Don't hear about this too often about Barry Hay or Golden Earring.
Totally agree with all of this. Another excellent video. It was always easier to find their more R&B type stuff than CQ in the 60s reissue section of the shops back in the 80s. Wouldn't be surprised if it was still that way. You do excellent work. ROCK ON!
Thanks, rock on!
Yes! I love this album sooo much and I think it’s such a shame that so little people know of it… I remember putting on “Misfit” in the car with my dad and saying ‘this song is from 1968, dad’ and he was mind blown. A lot of the songs sound 15 years ahead of its time! Even the cover is so amazing. It’s like a post punk album at least 10 years before post punk became a thing. Thank you Yesterday’s Papers.
Cheers! Definitely ahead of its time.
This was awesome! I'd never heard of the Outsiders and I'm blown away on how ahead of their time and experimental they were. YP, you've exceeded my expectations yet again!
Cheers!
Thank you for this. I've loved the song "Touch" since first exposed to it a quarter century ago on the "Nuggets II" compilation. I'm going to look for "C.Q." and learn about the Nederbeat sound of mid- to late-'60s Amsterdam. So sorry to read about Wally Tax's tragically shortened life; apparently he never recovered from the death of his longtime romantic partner. He was the son of Nazi concentration camp survivors. Be sure I'll use my ignorance not as a source of complacency but as a spur. Again, thanks to YP for another illuminating and fascinating vid.
the Nuggets compilations are amazing
The Hague was the real hotbed for Dutch rock music at the time, definitely look there!
@@EdwinJack64 Including Golden Earring and Earth & Fire.
@@EdwinJack64 Golden Earring and Earth & Fire.

Thank you, YP. Another fine piece. The whole Nederbiet sound is so vast and wonderful. I remember talking to Bob Stanley about the CQ/seek you - record. I read that the first time Nirvana played in Amsterdam, Kirk went on the hunt to find Wally Tax. Nirvana's first single / cover version - was by The Outsiders label mates Shocking Blue.
Cheers! I love Shocking Blue, great band. Their first two albums are essential.
@@YesterdaysPapers Thank you again for all your great work. Essential.
I was lucky enough to have been introduced to The Outsiders records as a young teenager in the 1980s and I still love them today. They were very influential on an American garage rock band called the Lyres (Jeff Connolly, he was also in DMZ) from the 1980s. Their first album On Fyre is amazing and shows just how much they were influenced by them. I remember seeing a video on RUclips years ago of Jeff Connolly visiting Wally Tax's grave and another with Wally Tax from Dutch TV where he talks about only ever wearing pink socks and how much he hated paying tax. He was an interesting man. I'm really glad to have seen this, they deserve more exposure although part of me has enjoyed having them as a secret few knew about.
Sounds fantastic! Listening to the clips of CQ, I was reminded of Buffalo Springfield Again. Not so much in the sound as in the variety of moods, styles and tempos, signs of great writers and musicians. Thanks, as always, for the info and great entertainment.
Thanks!
Wally Tax died in Amsterdam 57 years old. After writing songs in the seventies and early eighties ( writer/producer ) for some other artists it became silent. His friends in music had to collect money to give him a normal funeral and a gravestone.

Great doc as always YT. Well done for picking the more 'obscure' and shining a light on their music. Amazing group. I'm fortunate to own an original copy of CQ. Cheers Nigel
Thanks Nigel! I'd love to own an original copy of it. I have a vinyl reissue of it.
This is a great channel to discover music. And it only focuses on mostly English musicians. Imagine how much more is out there from all over the world? I wish we had an American version of this channel.
..or French
My parents thought Wally was the Antichrist incarnate, so obviously I loved The Outsiders to pieces. Great vid YP on one of our great groups of old.
The "Antichrist" lol.....Wally had something of Jesus about him .I remember The Pretty Things' 1965 Blokker performance on Dutch television... that sure was the "second coming"........
This is great that you posted this video. Yes, this album deserves to be right up there with the utmost recognition and I've tried to myself get the word out since I found about them in '93 when i got their CD, same day as getting High Tide Sea Shanties. it was a nice 2 album snag that day. - right on.
I just discovered your channel today. It’s going to cost me some money as I now need to get my hands on a lot of music I never knew existed. Starting with CQ I believe. Thanks and I plan on watching everything you have done and will do.
Cheers!
Such dense symphonically complex music. Great find, YP.
Cheers!
Quality presentation, my friend. Thanks for the inspiration!

@8:54...thru 9:14...WOW...Now THAT is something else...Another outstanding piece of work; the videos, the edits, the commentary. Thanks YP~!
Fantastic video about a fantastic album !. I first heard this album earlier this year (a little while before this video came out i think) but its already become a favourite. I would have no regrets saying The Man On The Dune was probably one of if not the fastest song in the world at that point. It really is 60s Hardcore.
Fkn great band! And a well put together video. Thanks!
I think it would be awesome if , in the future, you could do mini docs on other European freak beat and psychedelic groups from the 60s!! I would love to see one on Os Mutantes from Brazil!
Bloody Hell -- they're brilliant! Am now a fan. :0)
This is amazing. What a sound predating punk and goth. Lots to listen to and take in. Thanks!
Great video. Sraggering, that Polydor only pressed 500 copies of it. Their releases on the label are all prduced so well.
Very well-crafted docu about the Outsiders! Huge thanks for that Yesterday's Papers! Together with Q65, they were among the longest-haired groups in the still neatly raked Netherlands. Besides their great albums and singles, they were also very good live! Our neighbour attended an Outsiders concert in the East of the Netherlands as a teenage girl in the 60s. That was a real sensation! However, Wally Tax was as stoned as a monkey she told me 🙉. And not only Wally, the whole band seemed to be a big consumer of a native crop called Nederweed. That certainly contributed to the psychedelic qualities of their album CQ 😅! Unfortunately, only drummer Leendert "Buzz" Busch and Appie Rammers (bass) are still alive from the Outsiders. Oh yes, another little thing, Mr Rammers is not called Apple 🍎but Appie 😂. Very good job! Greetings! EJ
The Outsiders were live better than Q65. I liked the Livin' Blues well live as well, though the band was a mess, because of internal problems (and drugs and alcohol, I suppose). A nice band was The Bintangs. I didn't like BZN, though the group members were really nice. In the beginning it was a pop-band without a lady-singer.
@@elkiebeerepoot5829
Yes, you could be right about that, I dare not say. But their live recordings from Breda are blistering! Ah yes, good bands Livin' Blues and the Bintangs. Livin' Blues' 1970/71 song "Wang Dang Doodle" sounds like some kind of NederBeat Steppenwolf! Good that you also touch on BZN. Not exactly my taste but Volendam was also a hotspot of Nederbeat. I'd rather go for the Cats (sort of a guilty pleasure band of mine 😂). Thanks for your comment, could you be from the Netherlands?
Cheers Edwin!
@@YesterdaysPapers
Really special that you made an episode of the Outsiders! There were new fascinating details in it for me too! Good luck preparing your next video! EJ
Greetings, Edwin
What about that Nederweed?
Wally Tax stoned? No way! 🤣
The Tax man of Amsterdam
was a great frontman/singer songwriter.
A sad ending to his life
RIP WT
The Outsiders were outsiders in the US. Too bad for American rock-n-rollers.
Cheers, Nederweeder Rhine Tripper
There's a fantastic live version of "Touch" by Boston garage rockers Lyres with Wally Tax on vocals (recorded for VPRO Netherlands) on their 1988 album A Promise is a Promise. Same track is on a Lyres compilation called Some Lyres.
Thank you, YP, putting a light on these ‘way before their time’ bands. Your series on the LA Garage bands was exciting to me because of my close proximity to it growing up. Now, you are returning to the European continent, introducing me to a whole new world of music. I only knew of the Outsiders and their song Touch from the Nuggets compilation. Didn’t know a thing about them. I’m going to spend my Saturday going down the Outsiders rabbit hole.
Thanks! Their stuff is definitely worth checking out.
Thanks! CQ has been a fave ever since I found a copy at a flea market here in Holland in the early '90s. The Golden Earring fired their manager in the early '80s after he tried to hinder the career of Dutch hard rock band Vandenberg, who he saw as a threat to the Earring. In the '60s he worked at Polydor, wonder if he did anything to bury the Outsiders record?
Thanks for shedding light on this band.
I will definitely go listen to them
Cool, I think you'll love their music.
How on earth have I never heard of this band! Thank you for putting this out there, I will definitely be on the hunt for the full album.
Apologies for the unintentionally lengthy hiatus YP (long story) but I see you haven’t lost your touch! These guys are fabulous! I was a huge Golden Earring fan for decades (still have a few original GE vinyls) and also enjoyed some Krautrock groups (particularly Amon Düül II and Faust), yet I’ve never heard of this band. Thanks as always for enlightening us to these musical gems, it’s good to be back.
Cheers Linda, good to see you back.
I enjoyed the pop Dutch invasion groups like the Tee Set George Baker Selection Shocking Blue Golden Earring and Mouth and McNeil and Hocus Pocus but I had never heard of the Outsiders until this video as they were a excellent versatile group so thanks Yesterday's Papers for posting this as this was a Dutch treat.
"Hocus Pocus" is an instrumental track by the band Focus.
@@henklass you are right about that thanks for correcting me and as I remember that song I loved the yodeling.
I was just reading about Wally Tax and his life after his music career. Very sad story. Rest in Peace.
Thank you very much for creating this excellent mini-documentary about The Outsiders from Amsterdam. 🙂 I bought an original (and nearly mint) copy of C.Q. in the early 90s at a flea market here in Amsterdam for 15 guilders (= approx. 8 dollars), and it appears that my LP is now worth quite a bit more these days. ;-) In 1994 an excellent 2-CD set with 36 tracks was released on the Pseudonym label called "C.Q. Sessions" , and if you like this album it's definitely worth checking out this CD-set. I by the way saw Wally Tax quite a few times in the mid- and late 1990s in the eastern part of Amsterdam (he was living in a small apartment there), and unfortunately he wasn't doing too well health-wise and financially during the last part of his life (he passed away in 2005), and it was rather sad to see what had become of this very talented former Dutch teen idol from the 60s... Here's a nice documentary about Wally Tax & The Outsiders from 1998 (unfortunately only in Dutch): ruclips.net/video/7dKYX52zuFw/видео.html
Thank you for featuring one of my all time favorite albums. Now you just need to make a video about the Rodys “Earnest Vocation”.
Yes, the Ro-d-ys is a very good recommendation! They have produced enough interesting material for an episode. Add to that the material from Zen and voila!
The Netherlands had some truly unique and original bands, Ro-d-ys were definitely one!
You have one amazing channel 1st time viewer and you are right on in y’our analysis
What a great underrated band, very tasty document, thank you!
A truly masterpiece, my favourite Misfit!! Cheers from Spain.
I’ve never heard of this record before, and it’s definitely one I’ll seek out! The song on Nuggets II is probably the only song of theirs I’ve listened to.
By the way, even Sweden had a 60’s garage band called The Outsiders, recently heard a good song by them here on RUclips. So being the Outsiders seems to be a seal of quality!
I don't know if there is any Oscar for posting clips on yt but you'd deserve it each and every time. (And a Palme d'Or too!).
Amazing. Professionals are not as professional as you are, YP. 👍
Thank you!
0:38 I really dig the graphic implementation of the term “outsiders” on this album cover - it is a brilliant example of good visual communication
One of my favourite….simply perfect
Another great video! Top tip: The Factory - Path Through The Forest 7" {1968} Just heard this today. Lovely stuff!
Thanks for highlighting this interesting band!
Thanks for profiling these gents. I've always adored them.
Fascinating. Just my kind of thing, this music. Thank you. Grateful
Good call. I think I remember reading about them in Ugly Things magazine years ago. How about something on The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band who recently turned up on the soundtrack for the excellent drama series Under the Bridge. Don't think I've ever heard them on a soundtrack before!
Beautifully done, great mix of sound and images. A great band. I was a little surprised you did not specifically refer to Wally Tax's wild harmonica playing, which gave a unique edge to many of their songs. The harmonica solo at the end of Daddy Died on Saturday, for example, pushes that song into another dimension.
Thanks for this excellent video on a legendary album. Just fyi, the bassist’s first name is not “Apple,” 🍎, but rather Appie (pronounced “app-ee”). 😊 THANKS SO MUCH for all of your videos. I love your channel! ❤
You're right. I'd not been aware of this band. Interesting stuff!!! 🎸🎹🎼
Always a treasure here. Didn't know about this Dutch band.
Wally Tax had one of the best voices in Rock. Great job as ever on classic group!
Absolutely fantastic what a fantastic video have a wonderful weekend also Monday is my friends birthday ❤😊
The Outsiders were fantastic. This is the first I'm hearing them. Every song is a winner. They have a wide variety of styles especially considering how briefly the existed.
They sound like David Bowie meets the Psychedelic Furs meets Thee Oh Sees meets The Velvet Underground. Masterpiece is an accurate description.
These guys are awesome! Nice share!
The musical cross influences of diverse bands like The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Fairport Convention, Byrds, Pretty Things, San Francisco Bands and others are evident here. Admittedly, my access to the great groups via youtube and other sources is much greater now than back-in-the-day then. But it's remarkable that The Misfits were not more well-known. I will definitely check out their music further. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for this. I always like to learn of new bands I've never heard of before, especially in the Psychedelic genre. I listened to "CQ" and I enjoyed it. You can hear the influences of Pink Floyd (C.Q.) and The Doors (Prison song). But I was struck by how much the vocals on some songs remind me of 68-71 era David Bowie. Not to compare. "CQ" stands on its own merits, deservedly so.
I heard the similarity to early Bowie too!
Very good doc it’s worth a look!
Geweldig 👍
This is an Excellent piece from what I consider one of the best music channels on you tube…👏👏👏👍

I love the way many albums that seemed to be failures and had no audience have been rediscovered gradually and found fans. These albums were usually worked on very hard and seriously and I hope some band members were around to enjoy a feeling of finally being appreciated.
First heard this a little over 15 years ago and it quickly became a favorite!
The Outsiders!!! one of those gems I found in those Blogspot days :D happy to see them being more recognized than yesterday!
Apparently MGMT found them the same way, they used to frequent blogs and find obscure bands
Great presentation man! I'm all over this. Outstanding work.
Wonder if you could do a dive on another forgotten 1968 album - the millennium: begin.
Maybe in the future. I like that record.

Thank you a lot , I never heard this band, really fascinating

Cool to see so many people in the comment section who just now heard the Outsiders for the first time. One of my favorite Dutch 60s bands😊.
As a veteran musician of that era, and a BIG fan of psychedelic music, here's my slant:
What you're trying to peg as psychedelic is:
which, even then, was more the roots of punk. You want to hear real psychedelic? Quicksilver, Grateful Dead circa '67-'71, early Mothers
Wrong
But then ,everyone has their own idea about "psychedelic" , personally I find CQ has more in common with a somewhat depressing Joy Division. Tax was just as tortured a soul as Ian Curtis ; he himself would probably be the last to consider this "psychedelic" ,although he wouldn't mind if it earned him a bit of posthumous recognition.
Soft Machine, early Floyd, Pretty Things ,Hendrix, Twink, Byrds, Love,Spirit is more my kind of "Psychedelia".
I have heard a couple of these songs and have them on compilations, this CQ recording is not really my cup of tea but thanks anyway for the presentation video, it was very good.
Fascinating learning about this group. Took a break from reading Judas Priest lead singer Rob Halford’s autobiography “Confess,” another artist about which I previously knew nothing.
Any surprises? A love of Gilbert and Sullivan? There’s always more to the story…
Since watching this video (twice) I’ve purchased the 2001 vinyl reissue. I think it’s my second favorite psych LP I own now - it blew past dozens of records to claim that spot. I heard the album a while ago (with bonus tracks that messed with the flow of the original album) but hearing it in its proper form is magical. Like I said in my previous comment - masterpiece is an accurate description.
Glad you dug the album. Cheers!
I have the cd reissue of this on RPM. It's a legendary record that I have never seen at a store. Raw !

Now this was something. I like their sound. Are any of the band members still alive? Polygram could see the trends of the 1980s and beyond. Here in the States in the early 70s, there was a trend known as the Dutch Invasion with acts like The Shocking Blue, Mouth and MacNeil, Focus, Golden Earring, and much later Herman Brood who was of course one of rock's most tragic stories.
