Wow, I had tears listening to that one! . What touching, loving lyrics Barry wrote and sang to Robin. Throughout the Bee Gees careers, they were always using references to nature in their lyrics which made their message so effective. Here he talks about the seasons to refer to times with his brother(s) and a rainbow to describe their journey and beautifully expresses his love for his brother Robin (and I think also to his other two brothers). Barry and his brothers were just beautiful souls. I just wish I could find a group now that I love as much as the Bee Gees. What they gave in terms of musicianship, versatility, depth of writing, and singing appears to be unmatched. The brothers also have a way to connect with people. Even though I never met any of them, I feel a connection to them. What a legacy for these 3 men to give to the world.

Barry said in an interview that he wrote this song for Robin and sang it to him on his death bed. Robin was always driven for, "one more hit, one more album, one more tour" Barry said the meaning of the song was a message to his brother that they made it to the end of the rainbow, that there was nothing left undone, that they achieved their goals as a group.

I almost didn't play this because I knew what my reaction would be. There really isn't anything I can say, except I have no doubt in the world that all the brothers loved each other, and this was Barry's way of saying so. Lovely, complicated men, and we were the recipients of their gift to the world.

How does one handle both pain and enjoyment?
When I saw that you were going to react to the end of the rainbow I didn't want to watch/listen to the reaction. It's a man's very personal letter to his brother(s). (Although Robin was the main audience for Barry, he said is this also for Mo.)
The emotion the loss the love is so raw in this song it hurts to listen to it, yet it's a great song to listen to. Contradictions. I like this song the moment I heard it when the album iI the Now came out. thank you Chad, I think you're the only reactionary who has reacted to this song, I may be wrong about that. What a great song, what a great man, what a Great band. They are deeply loved.

Whatever went on between Robin and Barry, I always remember Robin saying in one of The Bee Gees documentaries that Barry was a very warm person, and didn’t like discord (I’m paraphrasing). He said that Barry wouldn’t get along just for the sake of it (at all costs), but preferred peace. Those are words of high praise IMHO, and tell me that Barry was never itching for confrontation. After Mo died, it all changed musically, creatively, but I believe the love never changed.

I remember Barry explaining today is tomorrow the winter is summer. He actually sang this or at least what he had done on this song to Robin although Robin was in a coma. How sad for Barry to see all his family except for his sister leave this world. Thank God he has a wonderful family that want to do all they can to help him. Sad reaction ... It is such a profoundly beautiful song, and even more so knowing that Barry was given the opportunity by Robin's doctor to sit beside Robin, just he and Robin in the room, while Robin was in the coma and sing this song to him that he wrote just for him. So very emotional, Chad, written for Robin, and you're totally correct that they weren't getting along with each other when Robin passed away. In fact, Barry admitted he wasn't on good terms with Andy or Mo when they passed away as well. But we know that all four brothers loved each other very much. You're right about sibling rivalry, too. It can totally change your perspective and make you crazy. All of us with siblings know this is so. Thank you for another wonderful weekend! I'm already waiting patiently for our next marathon.

    • @dp3396

How they have all lived the best and worst of times in the public eye! Barry very humbly shared that he wasn’t on the best of terms with any of the three, but never took the op to tell his side of an argument when they weren’t there to tell theirs. They all said they had been told by professionals that the best way to help Andy was with tough love, but in hindsight all shared regrets. From what I’ve read, shortly before Mo passed...Barry handled most of the business for the group, and thought they had an agreement to change management, but when it came time, Robin and Mo chose to stay with their old management, and only Barry moved his. I think this is what was being referred to with Mo. Not a big blow up, but at least on Barry’s part probably hurt feelings that after all of the years of him guiding them well, and no matter how well reasoned he was about why new management was needed, that same old struggle for autonomy from him was there. It was almost like whatever Barry wanted, Robin bucked at, and Mo had to be the tie breaker. Family business is hard. When they were writing and recording and singing and laughing together things were at their best. Taking care of the family business in between, not so much. That or something like it is probably what Barry was referring to with Mo. I think he said with Rob that Rob really wanted the two of them to go forward as The Bee Gees without Mo, and he didn’t think they should... or that he could. He also had some hearing loss issues, etc. He recently said that looking back, Rob was prob so desperate to record again because he knew he was sick. You can see all points of view. One was good and the other bad, or one right and the other wrong. Family business is just complicated, but they were always family, always loved each other, always shared a very special bond, and very humbly shared their personal lives because fans want to know, and in case the lessons they had learned the hard way might help others. Will have to wait for the books to come out to possibly know more.

@@dp3396 - Maybe Barry was right with the idea that changing their management would have been a good move. Whoever was in charge of promoting them and getting them airplay did a REALLY lousy job in the 80's and 90's. So much terrific music never got proper promotion. 😕 Terribly sad and unfair.
Rob did want to continue as The Bee Gees after Mo died and he seemed desperate to work to maintain his sanity and purpose but Barry said -
"We just can't force ourselves on everyone saying we're the Bee Gees without Mo". That is true. He was right. It could never be the same.
Ironically I have seen recent ads for "The Bee Gees" (Barry's) concert dates. Can he "force himself on everyone saying he's the Bee Gees without Mo AND Robin"?
That also could never be the same. I just find that an astounding reversal. He should tour as himself.
I'm glad they each kept producing music but neither one nor two could ever be The Bee Gees again.
Considering the mix of family dynamics added to professional careers for 50+ years, it is amazing that they got through it. I think it was Yvonne who said they would never have lasted together if they weren't brothers.
If more books are written, I wonder by whom and how will they know the minds of the brothers, especially with two gone. Only they know what happened and even each of them see their lives through their own lenses.

I have purposely not listened to this song. I figured I knew what it was about. And I knew how emotional it would be. And yes, I am feeling that emotion right now. It is a beautiful song. And with my musical father nearing the end, the timing of this song has hit me. Time just keeps rolling. We cannot stop it. Each day is a gift.

Chad, I was like you. I waited a long time to listen to this song. But it's a wonderful tribute, and shows so clearly the love between brothers.
If you haven't already done so, I urge you to listen to "Sydney," although I know I can't listen to it with a dry eye. Another song you should hear/see is Barry's solo rendition of "I Started a Joke" from his Mythology tour. He had said that was one song that he could never sing, because that was Robin's song. But this one time he paid such a beautiful tribute .... and I'm not going to tell you any more about it, except to say that the clip looks like it was taken from the audience on a cell phone.

@@brcfan9 I’ve always loved the Bee Gees, despite not knowing anything about the group. I love Barry’s songwriting, especially the lyrics. I love Barry’s voice. He has to have the sweetest, most delicious-toned, unique-sounding voice I’ve ever heard. But above all, I’m so glad I got to know him this year, because he’s one of only a handful of people who make my life better by knowing them.

I am new here. I have subscribed, because the Bee Gees were re-introduced to me only a couple of months ago, and I had missed so, so much. The twins were only 2 years older than myself. Maurice and Robin were born on my husbands birthday, December 22, when he was 2 years old.. Robin passed on the 20th of May, only 2 days after my birthday. I feel almost a paranormal bond at times, which my husband thinks could be a thing. Thank you for sharing with us. I know this was so heart touching for so many. I had tears then, and I am still so moved. Barry did such a loving tribute for Robin to experience at the end of his rainbow. Wow❤ Deme in Bama.

I've been with the Bee Gees since their first album.
I met them twice in 1971, once in Nashville, with lounge conversation and lost photos, and 2 weeks later in Little Rock with a back stage invitation.
I'm almost 74 now and they still tear/tear me up.
    Thank you for these shares.
I'm texting here from the future; but, may I request Castles In the Air from their A Kick in the Head Is Worth Eight In the Pants album which sounds a lot like they were losing their direction and had become just another story in the Newsweek.
Remember, this album came out very shortly before Saturday Night Fever.

Barry(Baz or Bazzie) still finds it really difficult to talk about his brothers; Robin(Bodding - his Nick name from childhood because Maurice couldn’t say Robin) and Maurice.
Maurice’s nickname was Woggie, the reasons for that are unclear.
Barry, instead, has made a montage video of him and his brothers in various stages of their career. He called the video “Bodding”. It is sad to watch but at the same time uplifting as there are clips of the brothers I hadn’t seen. Enjoy everyone.

It's a very moving song. I just wish Barry had not used the term "fair-weather friend" because surely it would not apply to someone with whom you grew up and worked alongside for more than 50 years.

    • @francisxray9900
      @francisxray9900 2 года назад +3

Good point, Diana! Thinking about it, an answer could be that Barry didn't want to deny all the conflicts, they went through after their childhood. Two headstrong man and so he decided not to fit the role of a hypocrite, beside the deep and honest mourning inside him at all. Often, his brothers did'nt ask him for a piece of advice. But that's life and adults do so. Factly, his opinion nearly always was the right one, about things we all know. Just like holding their songrights, which he fought out over many years, without much help from his brothers. Or that the death of Maurice was also the end of the Bee Gees. Otherwise, could be also private reasons, which only must be hold inside their families.

It’s very hard to imagine, what that could mean,in this song.He uses the word friend, twice,in that line.Amigo, and fairweather friend. So that’s a friend only in good times, and a real friend.I wonder if he could be referring to Rob and Mo.
