Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins on depression and the deaths of Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington

  • Rog and Bryce were lucky enough to fly to Sydney to interview two of the biggest rockstars in the world, Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins, from one of the biggest rock bands in the world - Foo Fighters.
They talked about a range of things - Rog's deep voice and his unfathomably hairy forearms, to name a couple. But they also touched on a much more serious note, and something that is very real and very unsettling: depression and suicide.
Bryce asked the two rockstars to weigh in their thoughts on the tragic deaths of Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington, two much-loved musicians who took their own lives earlier this year. An emotional Grohl and Hawkins opened up and provided the most raw and most real conversation that we've been a part of.
Take the time to watch and listen to the video above, and remember to keep checking in on your mates to see if they're doing ok.
If you wish to talk to someone about mental illness or domestic violence, you can call Lifeline on 0800 543 354, the Depression Helpline on 0800 111 757 or the National Telehealth Service on 1737.

    • @AnoNym-zp2mp

People listen to ordinary people as well. But no, with billions of people in the world few people are going to listen to what everyone has to say. Celebrities/artists have a reason to be heard as certain people value them as part of their lives as well as being accomplished.

People don't ONLY listen when celebrities speak out. But if you have an opportunity to inherit an audience of fans of your art for you to speak about issues like this, I think it's more selfish if you say "Well, I have experienced this in my life. And I could speak to my fans and maybe even inspire one or more to seek help. But I am not going to do it because some douche on the internet has a problem with famous people speaking their minds." Only those that are certified, or are absolutely anonymous to society should speak? Do you know why most people don't listen to "ordinary" people?
For the same reason I don't take advice on raising a child from some stranger. Who are you for me to listen?

Dave Grohl’s words about depression are SPOT ON. Most others cannot see this unseen disease. It hides, it dwells in the shadows and depths of despair. People tell you to “snap out of it” as if it were that simple a solution. “Get over it” is another go to people say.
Do they not realize that if was that simple, we’d all not be depressed? Do they not see the depths of our despair? The stigma that goes along with depression?
If only I could let a person in when I am spiraling out of control... When I’m overwhelmed by negativity and despair. Sometimes there is no trigger. Sometimes there is. But I’m judged by society either way with little compassion or comfort.
You do not know the throes of depression until you’re consumed. But, by the grace of God, I have a network who supports me when I’m in its grasp.
Quit judging. Just because Chris, Chester, and Kurt had fame and fortune, does NOT mean these men had peace.

Well Kristina you're right about most of your points - please don't take this wrong. As a severely depressed person myself - I have learned - no one is JUDGING, because no one is really noticing the other person - they only care about themselves. So take that off the list of reasons for depression. I know the throes of depression; I know that if I don't care for myself, no one will, and if I don't do something for others (usually animals) I am done. By extending the caring you seek to another, an animal or person, you will get the caring you seek. But you have to force yourself out of yourself...and the stupid drugs aren't the solution.

@@kristinemcgill6079 All I can add is that drugs aren't always simply "stupid", though they (like anything) can be used that way. But for many, they can be what opens those "doors of perception" and allows people to glimpse and incorporate thought patterns outside of their deep day-to-day darkness and consequent dysfunction.

Some things will never be understood unless those things have become reality. Don't just before learning the truth. I remember at a young age judging just the same for some that chose suicide, because i was hurt by the losses of the people that had made that choice.and the pain turned into anger because i didn't yet understand.those who choose scuicide "ARE NOT COWARDS,OR SELFISH!". they are simply lost and imprisoned in the worst and most tragic emotion that exists for so many. Later on in my life i had sadly realized this fact as i had suddenly understood by having to live with the same tragedy that is depression. I have a beautiful innocent loving daughter and other loving people that care for me in my life . unfortunately the pain, sorrow, sadness, sickness ect. are so severe that i couldnt see past it. Or even think of how it would effect and devastate my innocent daughter and many others in my life. The fact is that it hurt so tremendously that all i could do was immediately stop and end the nightmarish pain and sadness i was suddenly experiencing. If you were suddenly engulfed in flames, would you instantly do anything to stop the pain and put the flames out? Well thats how severe depression can be. and just as sudden as shockingly being set in flames u have no time to think u panic and what happens at that moment happens. That's the sad honest truth of how depression can be and is for so many. In the moment of the times i took my life i couldnt think of my daughter or any other.all i could do was instantly stop the pain, like putting a painful flame out from ones skin. Thankfully there were special people that had brought me back to life. I now constantly remember those dark times and think of my daughter and the effects that my death would inflict on her and others that care for me. I use those painful memories to care and think of those that i would have hurt and left behind by taking my life to prevent that tragic reality. Depression cant just be turned off and there is not always a magic pill to solve it. I hope this message reaches even 1 person that judged like i once did not understanding the truth behind the topic, and allow them to be part of a solution to help the suffering. instead of causing victims further insecurities, self esteem issues, and stigmas regarding depression..... Thank you to those who took the time to read this and i hope it helps to give anyone a bit more of an understanding or outlook to this issue. Too many suffer and feel the effects of tragic endings from depression. Every life matters. You are cared about even by strangers you haven't had the chance to meet. God bless everyone! 🕊💜✝

My heart is breaking. It still hasn’t sunk in yet….I’m just honored I got to see the band live in 2011. Taylor IS the only drummer who’s so damn good that he could support Dave as a frontman.
I can’t imagine how extraordinarily agonizing this is for his wife, kids, band mates, friends, etc.
I know as of now (3/26 at 5:30pm NYC time, I nor anyone else, knows the cause of death, but people and me too are assuming a relapse OD or he took his own life- both equally horrible. I hate speculation and do not like to fuel it as it’s disrespectful- if Taylor took his own life would mean Pat lost his first vocalist Darby to, then Kurt (so they say), and if that’s what happened, now Taylor.
Regardless of the cause, the world lost an incredible musician and human.

It was in Bogota, right? And they said something like traces of 10 or 20 substances found in his urine. I'm sorry but I have no right to know the results, but I would believe Taylor's family would have US authorities complete more extensive tests. Some of the "substances" reported can be prescription meds. So a contraindication could have happened. Too many unknowns here. Let the family have peace and if they want answers, let them have them in private.

I feel so sorry for Dave and I kind of feel like Taylor said, I'm so sad to think that Taylor isn't going to make another record, that there isn't going to be another drum solo. He will be missed! R.I.P Taylor 🌹

It isn’t getting better with this loss. I remember him in my twenties. Was I a huge fan? Not really. But, I really appreciated his dynamics and being a very good musician and into his gig. If he can go, any of us can go. Which, is totally true and relevant. Sucks! But, we will all go eventually, he was too young. Yet, an aged musician. He could’ve taken it all into his 60s, 70s. Maybe 80s! In this case, we never know our own nor anyone’s deadline. Literally

      The interviewers voices was okay
Perhaps Dave and Taylor unconsciously just became quiet and tried their best to reply while holding back emotions
I wish the interviewers who thinks of bringing up suicide and depression to these artists would be more aware how they are actually poking this heavy baggage loss and grief
And I mean like of course Dave forgot their conversation and the whole interview since they bring this particular issue that's been with him since his 20s, and they end the interview somehow unaware of the shift in the moods of Dave and Taylor
I mean to me the interviewers comes off as having no experience in loss of a friend, oblivious to the impact of asking that question to them
But maybe the interviewers were trying putting on this tough guy persona
      Sorry for the ramble, man
But this whole thing about men not being able to be vulnerable and cry in front of media about these personal and universal problems is just making me sad and frustrated
I mean I think every kid, every teen, every adult, should be able cry about their loss of a friend in front of people
Again sorry for the ramble but I really feel I need to let this out

God, Dave has lost so many people in his life... I don't even want to know how he tries to deal, because it's not something you really can. You never get over it, especially when you take your own life, because no matter how it feels, no matter how much you know, you have the haunting feeling you could have stopped it, that you could have done something, that you may have been at fault even... It's awful.

I was saving money to see soundgarden live. I started listening to them when I was in grade school. When Chris died I was devastated. I remember manager at the store I would sub at saying that he was weak for killing himself and he wasn't a real man. After that I started refusing to help him out and covering shifts at his store. I would straight up say, nah, I've got depression and am too weak to work those days.

Its like he says the public doesnt own the artist and if he decides to go we should let him. Of course a public and famous person is still free to decide, but depression and addiction are serious issues and treatable, there is survivors of suicidal crisis, too. Look at them, not necessarily only those that decided to end their lives.
