If you're talking airplay nationally, then that is something I don't have enough data to comment on. Glad you're a fan of this style. I hope you're going to shows. Lots of great female country singers out there who aren't famous and playing bars/clubs.
@@someguy4505 as groundbreaking as Maybelle and Sarah were, they didn't manage to open the industry's doors for female country singers right after them. Kitty was the first female country artist to consistently chart hit after hit and soon after others followed: Goldie Hill, Skeeter Davis, Jean Shepard, Patsy Cline and on and on into the 1960s. I think you'll find Roots Country is the closest you'll get these days. And it's great music, well worth giving it a listen. And Bluegrass is still going strong.
This song was a "reply" song to Hank Thompson's mega hit, "The Wild Side of Life". Another interesting fact is that this melody has topped the charts FIVE times! Each time with different lyrics. "The Great Speckled Bird", "The Prisoner's Song" and "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes".
I knew The Wild Side of Life from Jerry Lee's version, but he called it Honky Tonk Angels. I was watching a Status Quo video and looked up who wrote it, and that led me here!
A great singer... a great song! I found this: ""It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" is a 1952 country song written by J. D. "Jay" Miller, and recorded by Kitty Wells. It was an answer song to the Hank Thompson hit "The Wild Side of Life." The song -which blamed unfaithful men for creating unfaithful women- became the first No. 1 Billboard country hit for a solo woman artist. In addition to helping establish Wells as country music's first major woman star, "It Wasn't God..." paved the way for other women artists, particularly Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and Jean Stafford (Australia),[2] and songs where women call out unfaithful men. It was preserved by the National Recording Registry in 2007.
SING IT, KITTY! You are just telling the truth! You are a pioneer for women. Even before Patsy and Loretta!! Just stating my opinion! The truth is the truth!!
I'm sorry you have had your heart broke we know that this can be true.I have also known of several women whom did their man wrong can't put all blame in one place..
I used to play guitar for her and Johnny. My wife and I sure did love her. Everytime we're back in Nashville we drive past their house. The old bus is still in the driveway toward the back of the house.
Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton the absolute best female country singers that have ever graced us with their talents. There will never be any other to replace them.

@RawPhotography you are so right.
