Caramelized onions are amazing! I am going to show you the best way to make them. You cannot rush the process or you risk burning the onions and/or not getting the wonderful caramelized effect.
Patience are required! Once you get them cooked you can use them for all sorts of recipes and on or in foods.
Here are 11 examples for what you can do with them:
1. add them to scrambled eggs
2. add to spaghetti sauce
3. put them on your salad
4. Put them in your sandwich
5. top your pizza
6. on your bbq steak, chicken, fish or pork
7. put them in soup
8. on your hot dog or hamburger
9. in your quessadilla
10. in your pasta dish
11. on top of a baked potato
Okay, I will stop but I could go on...
So the best way to cook the onions is low and slow. There is really no way around it if you want good caramelized onions.
Slice or chop your onions up, and you can use any kind like red onions, yellow onions or sweet onions. They all work.
Place some olive oil and a little butter in your frying pan. Yes any type of fry pan will work including stainless steel, non stick or cast iron.
Heat the oil and butter over medium high heat and when the butter bubbles and foams up add your onions. Stir to coat them in the oil. Add just a little salt.
Plan to stir the onions frequently and turn down the heat if they are browning to much too quickly. These should take a good 45 minutes to cook.
You are looking for nice golden brown onions. The darker they get the more flavorful they are.
You can freeze these too. Place them in the freezer after they have cooled off. Be sure and label them so you remember when you put them in there.
Enjoy,
Rockin Robin

Thanks for sharing! You are absolutely right. Sometimes we are in too much of a rush. But it is so worth it!
Hi Mary, Wow that sounds great! Thanks for posting.
Caramelised onions food of the gods. Never thought of freezing them so many thanks for the tip.
That would be really good in mac and cheese. Never thought of that! Thanks for sharing.
Sounds good to me!
I've used this method several times only I combined Red and Green Bell Peppers with a couple of Yellow Onions in a large 12 inch deep frypan using butter and salt to make a dish that tastes great by it self or as a topping. I didn't realize that I had discovered caramelizing on my own and using Onions and Bell Peppers. Thank you for making this clear to me.
Don Chase
Thanks for your positive videos! I don't speak English well, but I understand everything you say and I've learned much from you! Thank you!
AlexPat3d Thank you so much! I'm glad to be able to help you out! Please share my channel!
Thanks Rockin Robin!! Another great video!! A few of my favorite recipes to use camelized onions are French Onion Soup, Hamburgers, and Pizza! Most people or restaurants just don't let the cook long enough...Keep 'em Rockin!!!
Just recently tried carmalized onions. Delicious and loved your video. We put it on bread (country french from Costco), top with diced or thinly sliced apples and last layer is provolone cheese. Pop in the toaster oven and bake until cheese melts. Yum!
Now that sounds mighty good! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Not dark enough for me. I like to caramelize mine in cast iron and I use gravy master or balsamic vinegar to deglaze the pan...or sometimes my homemade beef or chicken stock. Gives amazing flavor and extra brown flavor. Some people even add a dash of sugar to help the caramelizing process along and add some sweetness. 🙂
So......where's "your" cooking channel? Can't wait to see it!
Hi Robin, I have been cooking carmelized onion and uses Oil too, thanks for the tip for the croc pot
I used the caramelized onions in a dip and it was just fabulous. I followed the instructions of cooking low and slow for about 55 minutes. People raved about the dip. I attribute that to properly preparing the main ingredient. Thank you!
Hi Holly, aren't those caramelized onions amazing! Glad they made your dip a success. Thanks for sharing!
Best video so far to make these. Well done!
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching!
Thank you! French Onion Soup, hamburgers and pizza sounds great to me! Thanks for posting your comment.
Thanks for making this tutorial. We enjoy caramelized onions on grilled Portobello Pizzas and Avocados!
Hi Jason and Brooke, thank you for watching my video! Caramelized onions on grilled portabello pizzas and avocado sounds great!
Thanks, I enjoyed the show. Now will go caramelize some onions.
I use these for pretty much everything that I cook. I was wondering about the crock pot method, I think I will try that.
I love the smell of onions while I cook them, thanks for the advices you gave us this time they will be much better
+Yousra Toub Oh, yes! That is one of the best smells in the world. :)
I strongly agree
Yousra Toub morning
Really nice demonstration; both on the dicing and cooking. Thanks.
Hi Jimmie, glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching!
great idea to use the slow cooker! Thanks for this video
You are welcome!
Nice vid, I liked the dicing demonstration
Tips are useful, will make ahead of time.
Thanks for the comment Anna.
what a clear explanation! Thank you!
Thank you Rania! Have a great day!
THANK YOU for teaching me how to carmelize onions. I think I would cook them a little longer to get a deeper brown color, but your demonstration was excellent!
Thank you Janette!
Thank you! I now have the confidence to make tasty caramelized onions. I love your suggestion of making extra and freezing them. Who knew they would last for six months in the freezer. Couldn't have done it without you! Tim
+Tim Crowley Thanks for your comments Tim. Do try to use up your frozen onions in about 3 months but well wrapped they should go about 6.
+Rockin Robin's Cooking Mexican Recipes ... What do you set the crockpot on.. low or high? I make caramelized onions a lot and love them in my Meatballs and sausage balls or links. You would be amazed how it changes up the flavor instead of using plain onion. Also when I make the caramelized onion I really enjoy the flavor of a little brown sugar (but on much) I think it helps pull sweetness out. You just got yourself a new subber .. lol. PS my new daughter in law LOVES Mexican and eats it practically every night. She either cooks it all the time or when she and my son go out for dinner.. guess where they end up.. yup! So glad I found you, Robin. Thanks
@@joannekeryger7909 She said "hi".
Excellent vid. I had been wondering about doing them in crock-pot, now I know it's doable....I know what I'm doing tomorrow :)
Thanks for the great video, I added some of these onions to a couscous and it was awesome!
***** That sounds great! Thanks for stopping by and sharing!
I LOVE onions and alwys wanted to know how to make them this way!-gotta try them like this as soon as possible
Hi Joyce, remember to cook them low and slow! Enjoy!
You are good teacher and a great cook. 👌👌👌👌👌👌
Thank you Fredy! I appreciate the comment!
Nice video. My MIL used to make onions like this, but after allowing them to (initially) brown in the butter, she would add a little water and salt, simmer on low until the water was cooked off, and repeat those steps a few times over about 30 minutes. I haven't made them in a long time. Never thought of the crockpot, that sounds great!
Barbara Lenox Thanks Barbara, I appreciate the comment.
Hi Ronnie, Thank you for your comments! I like your "trinity" idea too. I'll try it. Happy holidays!
perfect recipe...nice, not over the top presentation from pleasant cook.
+Richrdee Thank you for stopping by! Have a great day!
Thanks Rockin Robin's Cooking Mexican Recipes.com! :)
+Maryam Thasneem Thank you Maryam!
Brilliant :)
I'm using them in my green beans along with smoke turkey
great video
+TOe Knee Thank you Toe Knee!
I like to use sweet onions and use them to top burgers, or lay a juicy steak on a bed of em. Absolutely delicious!
BigDog21420 You are absolutely right! You can use caramelized onion for lot's of things! Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks I was telling friends in another country, who can look at this, to cook them on the very low flame....and you confirmed that they get sweeter and more delicious if cooked SLOWLY. From what I have seen online, a lot of cooks just don't get this-pity!
bfinfinity Low and slow is the way to go! They are amazing aren't they?
Try putting a mess of caramelized onions in a pie shell with some sauteed sliced pears or apples, shredded gouda and sharp cheddar, beaten egg and cream, and Bell's seasoning. Bake it a half hour or so at 350 F. It makes a delicious savory quiche!
That sounds really good! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot. I'm trying to learn how to cook. This here is a good start for me
You are welcome K.D. That's great you are learning to cook. I have a feeling you will be a very good cook. It's so much fun and healthier when you cook from scratch or close to it. Keep it up! Happy New Year!
Robin, Your kitchen is really nice. Here is another tip; if you are making a potato casserole, it is better to cut the onions pole to pole instead of cross wise so you have bigger pieces that won't break down.
+snowcloud06 Thank you!
i am deff gonna do this tomrrow , THANK YOU!!! :)
Hi Josh, hope you enjoy your caramelized onions. They are amazing. Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you for taking the time and sharing this with us . :)
I liked the way you explained
+Mayur Kadam Thank you Mayur!
+Rockin Robin's Cooking Mexican Recipes Do people usually eat it by itself or add it to recipes?
+Rockin Robin's Cooking Mexican Recipes thanks u much. I've tried SOOOOOOO many times burning onions n an attempt 2 carmeliz them so ur vid was very helpful thanku! nuthin like that end product either!
Nice job, Robin. You're an excellent host! I fix these onions, using your "recipe," in either my old black iron skillet or a crock pot and I add green (sometimes red) bell peppers and celery to it also. This "trinity" is a main ingredient to gumbos and many other things I cook and it's nice to have this made the right way in advance, Thanks for all you teach us!!
you are the best !
+Erwin Gonzalez Thank you Erwin, glad you are enjoying the videos!
I started learning how to cook for a month or two now and I think I made good progress. do you have a video for Mac and cheese? alot of videos from other people teach crap and your videos are actually cooking good stuff
They're great in baked mac and cheese.
Making french onion soup and wanted to make sure I was caramelizing my onions correctly. Thank you for taking the time to make this. :D I added sugar to help is that okay?
Hi Megan, I see no problem with adding the sugar. I'm glad the video helped you with the onions. Have a great day!
would you do this for indian cooking to?
right on top of a good burger...with BACON!!
....and blue cheese 😉
The hours are for cooking it in a crockpot. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
You answered my question! Can you cook caramelised onions in the crock pot. Thank you as I want to make mini quiches with Brie cheese and caramelised onions for a High Tea.
Sounds delicious Gloria!
can u use vegetable oil? wats difference between veg n olive oil?
Thanks for this tutorial. Now I have the perfect caramelized onions to go with my Brie cheese.
+daniel brown Yes you do Daniel! Thanks for watching!
I like to finish mine with some balsamic vinegar.
I used your system but was able to get great results in about 30 minutes. Then again, I cooked them at the same time as kielbasa so maybe the extra fat helped to cook it faster?
Jim McGuigan If you cook the onions on a higher temperature and really watch them and stir frequently, you can get them done in 30 minutes. But I think you get the best results low and slow. The sweetness really develops. Also, as you were cooking them with the kiebasa, they may have browned up more because of the sausage in the pan with them. All in all, if you were happy with the way they turned out, then that's what matters! Thanks for stopping by.
Looks good as long as your knife is razor sharp.
I love them as a sort of relish on just about any sandwich or burger or with any kind of meat. They are so good for you too...cleanses the blood! Thanks, Robin...Tess
Thanks. Gonna try this with meatloaf sandwiches.
Hi Jeffery, You are going to love these with your meatloaf sandwiches! Let me know!
Can you freeze these?
When did you add oil
Hi Crunchy, Ouch! That must have hurt a lot! The claw method is the only way to go.
I love the onions on a steak sandwich like a philly steak sandwich
nice video, just want to mention to the time 08:08, its minutes not hours.
Almost? I did, back in mid 80's. Had a great high carbon MAC knife from Japan. Lost my focus for one second and it was gone. Late 20's but a good amount grew back, the end just looks a little flattened, nothing anyone would notice.
You could but olive oil is better for you and tastes great.
When you take em out of the freezer how would you warm them back up?
+Rockin Robin's Cooking Mexican Recipes Thanks for replying!
I'll give this a shot! Looks yummy!!
I add a little raw sugar to mine towards the end gives them a nice sweet flavor, amazing on bratwurst and pierogie's.
Steve Mayers Thanks for sharing your tips.
So do they just get sweeter the longer you cook them?
They definitely get sweeter as you cook them. Just make sure to cook them slow and low (temperature). Don't try and rush it.
I use the onions to make recreations of in-n-out burgers
Nice Zaydon! Thanks for stopping in!
what do you recommend for grilled onions on hamburgers?
+Jim Warren Hi Jim, you could use these caramelized onions of course! or you could do a quicker version and just slice up some yellow onion and grill them in a frying pan with a little olive oil.
I would like to try some caramelized onions on a BBQ hotdog! :D
It would be delicious!
I like to cook mine until they are half done, then throw them into whatever Im cooking to finish them off. Surely you arnt just making caramelized onions on their own? However I thoroughly enjoyed your dicing of the onions, I used to just free style it. Haha
since when 45 mins is low&slow? atleast 2hrs for me. Then put it on ricotta pizza slice, finish with little bit parsely, parmesan. Beautiful
Ģirts Krastiņš Some people don't have the patience for 2 hours but boy are they good that way!
Ģirts Krastiņš I put a bunch in a skillet, some oil and put the top on.It helps it soften and then I add the sugar, and continue.
This lady looks like frank from shameless
god damn this comment took me out.. lmfao
Honestly. Onions are my favourite veggie. They are so versatile. Very flavourful. They pimp the most boring dishes.
Onions can take a dish to the next level that's for sure! Thanks for watching!
Too bad I can't add a photo of the caramelized onions and beer brats I made. the sure smell good!
Hi Joanne, If you go to my facebook page: RobinInTheKitchen.com you can post your photos there. That would be great! I would love to see it.
Throw them in the oven at 250*F for 3-4 hours
Have you tried making these in the crockpot?
+sdeleon I have not. But I’ve heard it works well!
olive oil is a substitute for butter
All I can hear is the awesome, adult version of Tina Belcher irl.
Le gaspillage de fou quand elle coupe l’oignon!
I like onions in the crockpot but this was not a tutorial. We want to see the final result.
i ut alittle of surgar and mustard in mines for hotdogs
Orlando Medley Sounds good Orlando! Thanks for stopping by!
Damn, that sounds amazing. On it!
+Rockin Robin's Cooking Mexican h bhai and
On a Burger Mmmm
+Dean Hello Oh yeah, that's that's gotta be good!
Thank you for not adding sugar.
In my view there is no reason to add sugar. Caramelizing the onions produces it's own sugar!
Cut your cooking time by 85%! Add a pinch of baking soda at the outset! Basic chemistry. See ruclips.net/video/npZosJvE1nU/видео.html
I copied what you do and keep trying but the onions do not turn out like that. Still taste nice enough though.
+Gary Cronshaw Hi Gary, how do they turn out? Don't they get a deep golden brown? Do you stir them frequently? They should turn out the same.
For dice leave the root on! Holds it together for you! Amateurs 🙄
Absolutely NO SOUND !!
These are FRIED onions. Real deal caramelized onions DO need added sugar, I am a Pro Chef. The concept of caramelization is using sufficient sugar to glaze the onions with caramelized sugar. Onions dont contain that kind of sugar, they have fructose. Telling people this fake news will prevent them from enjoying the real deal, which is 100 times better than these FRIED ONIONS. We Chefs have an obligation to protect food culture by being honest and accurate in what we tell people.
Sorry, I disagree. You do NOT need to add sugar to caramelize onions but you can add a little if you wish. The onions contain their own sugar and when you cook them you are essentially cooking off the water and concentrating the sugars. That's why they become sweeter and oh so delicious. Cook them low and slow. Wishing you a great day!
Fried onions are much faster to cook. 15 minutes is enough.
those aren't caramelized
Way too soggy ;(
+cranebeg Not really but way delicious. :) Thanks for stopping by!
Rockin Robin's Cooking Mexican Recipes Yeah, good attempt. Cooking is a 'journey'.
Lmao - viewers need to be shown how to dice or slice onions??? I thought this video was offering some chef-style method.
You CAN cook caramelized oniion in 10 minutes. There's a video on youtube in real time so stop spreading misinformation. High heat, plus cover, plus pan fond = caramelized in 10 minutes flat.
Jaekn you CAN drive your car with your feet, but that doesn't make it a good fucking idea. Slow and low is best.
Cooking and carmelizing are two different processes. Yes one can cook in ten mins. But Robin is right, carmelization of onions takes time... no substitute... sorry to burst your bubble there.
