  • In this quick video I show you a trick to quickly check your coolant level in your bike. Additionally I make a few comments and warnings about changing your coolant.
To check your coolant health, the proper way is to use a Coolant test strip, which measures the pH.

Excellent discussion covering a topic that is often accomplished unnecessarily because of “old school” habits. Well done!

You sir are a godsend…. The penlight trick is worth its weight in gold… I bought a used 2016 and I kept looking through the site window and I couldn’t figure out if there was coolant in the bike… penlight trick worked perfectly

Thanks, so much. I own a '15 r1200RT and love it ! Really wondered about coolant change interval. So, as you say, there isn't one !! Fine by me. Saves me time and $.

Thanks for the great videos! I understand you found a way to disable the windshield auto retract when the bike is turned off. If so could you please share the trick?

Enjoy your videos. Just bought a 2014 r1200 rt with 10K miles. Love riding this bike! I have taken your suggestions on crash bars, fender extender, and side stand foot enlarger. Also purchased an adapter for my GARMEN XT ( a must in my book) Now looking into replacing the Sargent seat with an day long. Only concern is that the present seat rub my inner thighs making long rides impossible So I don't know if I would have the same problem with the Daylong . Any input you could make would be helpful. Keep the great videos coming .

when you order your Daylong make them aware of this concern and they can modify it if necessary

You have great content! I've been watching you for the last couple of years...keep it up!
I'm interested in a BMW K1600GT or an RT. Not sure which yet. I guess, my heart is leaning more towards the GT. I'm looking at used GTs. Preferably between 2014 - 2019. I see that there are transmission and possibly linkage recalls, coils going bad etc.
I'm going to be new to BMW. But the last thing I want is to buy a bike (w/o a warranty...money is tight), and have someone perform a transmission recall!. Then having an un-comfy feeling whether it all gets put back together, perfect! Just a 'me' thingie! :) I don't want to give myself the extra stress. lol
In your honest opinion, and more importantly from your experience and knowledge, in regard to reliability etc.,
    1) Should I be concerned about the GT transmission?
    2) Maybe it only impacts a small number of GTs, and if one hasn't had a recall, I'd be fine??
    3) Because of the GT reliability, should I just go for an RT instead (2014 - 2019)?
Do you know, how I can find out whether a BMW bike had/has recalls for it, type of recall, and whether or not it's been performed?
P.S. Sorry about all the questions.

On the recalls - you can supply your VIN# to a BMW dealership service department and they can tell you if there are any outstanding recalls due. With regard to recalls-- i highly recommend following through with addressing them, as some things can cause catastrophic failures (1300GT cam chain tension, for example) .
On the bigger questions on the GT(16), I have not followed the reliability issues. That being said, its been 10 years that the 6cylinder has been on the roads, and as the older ones age, issues appear. Transmissions are not common failure points for ANY motorcycle, so to hear that there may be a common theme is not reassuring for the used market.
On reliability , the boxer has evolved over the last 25 years in a progressive manner. There have been notable steps forward in capacity (2005) , and cooling (2014) , but the fundamental layout is the same.
That being said, there are still stories of failed components. It is one reason I always have accepted the task of servicing my own bikes. I can carry out preventative measures as well as fix failed components. But that is a choice not everyone wants.
I know that doesn't answer your questions , but i switched to the RT and didn't regret it.

@@kiki231000 Chris thanks so much for your detailed response! One of the reasons, I love your vids. I actually like the RT in many ways. I'm looking for the better wind protection, and the overall handling characteristics! I've only test rode it one time (2014 model). However, the one thing that actually threw me off was the engine noise/tractor like. Not necessarily a knock-down...versus just been riding inline 4 cylinders for 25 years. Which then made me think of the GT. But, like I stated, not sure if I want to deal with the headaches. Not to say there couldn't be some with the RT. Did you ever test ride the 1250? Likes/dislikes?
