  • I fished from 1 hour before the high tide till 2 hours following the tide peaked. Tide was rolling in quickly with a strong current so it’s really difficult to keep the rig sink down to the bottom with light sinkers; local fishermen use 10-20 oz sinker to sink rig in this strong current. A lot of small fish such as Tomcod were in the river so using a bigger bait or a whole fish as a bait might reduce the chance of losing bait if you are targeting big strip bass instead of small fish. I used mackerel strips as lure and kept losing them to tommy cod (。╯︵╰。). Using squid or whole fish of mackerel were highly recommended by the local fishermen.

I know this spot very well as some friends of mine use this area as their launch point for their boats for setting nets. I prefer to either fish at the red barn or downtown Shubie. I use prawn as bait and a size 06 circle hook so as not to catch as many tommy cod.

Can you keep tomcod? Are they part of groundfish limits?

What licenses do you need to fish in NS? Can you do a video about it?

You don't need a license to fish in tidal or salt water, but you still need to follow federal and provincial rules while fishing. With a Nova Scotia fishing license, you can fish in lakes, rivers, and streams during the open fishing season.
