Great review, Mark! If the older edition of the Green was opened quite some time before the new edition, the added oxidation could be influencing the difference in nose and taste. @@WhiskyWhistle I noticed you gave Loch Lomond 12 a much higher greater than the new Johnnie Walker Green Label does that mean you prefer it over the green label
the new one in the green packaging is by far the best, it has the richest deepest flavour of the predecessors. It 's the most malty, woody and sweet.. also there isn't that alcoholic note in the finish like the previous one. I recommend you start a dram with a week whisky and then proceed with this one, it'll hit you with powerful flavour when you can appreciate just what it has to offer. Cheers
@@WhiskyWhistle I prefer the newest JWG in the green box.. it also seems most consistent while the others varied from bottle to bottle. Green is just fantastic in and of itself, best bang for buck in whisky in my opinion. Once again, try this experiment, a mild whisky (MUST BE A MALT THOUGH..not smoky) get your palette immersed with a mild, somewhat lacking malt whisky ..a cheaper one (they certainly have their place) then follow it up with a green, you'll be hit hard with such depth of flavour, barrel, you'l taste the smoke and everything it has to offer, it's a truly wonderful experience... I've found Green to be the one to get the experience with above even other more complex and stronger scotches.
I would probably go a point or two higher. But I was really intrigued by your distinguishing the old packaging from the new. (I've never had the new packaging.) Other than your tasting, do you have info that they also changed the blend when they changed the packaging? Nice job by the way Markus, really well detailed review.
Thanks TC! Let’s say I gave it the old college try! No, taste and smell were the only evidence of the flavour shift. I don’t think they’d mention, but there might be someone out there with some other evidence to the same conclusion. Upon opening this one my gut reaction to the scent was Speyside. The flavour followed with much lighter Islay and Skye presenting. Let me reiterate however that it works deliciously well. The wood management is clearly strong. It stands up nicely against any modern 15-16 year single malts - even more so than before. Would it not be fun to line up Green Labels from its inception to now and taste through the ages?! Hmm 🤔 hehe. You’re a gent! Hope you enjoyed a nice Burns Supper. I’ll partake tomorrow😋 Cheers from the 2nd coldest big city presently -25°C🥃🥃🥃🥃 Mark
I recently went to Portuguese restaurant and sat at the bar to have lunch when I noticed a row of JW on display. Their were 2 Johnnie Greens side by side, recognizeing one of them was from the older style from the labels I went with that one. When the lady tried to pull the cork off the 3/4 full bottle the cork broke and I thought it wasn't meant to be for a second but she managed to remove the cork with a cork screw. She then poured me a very generous amount in a sifter glass, I took out a small piece of the cork floating in my 12 dollar glass of whisky and introduced myself to the her saying Hello...How are you...quite well...thank you very much! When I tasted it I couldn't believe how good it was, especially with my top round steak and thinly sliced potato fries on special garlic gravey sauce. It was my most enjoyable meal in a long time. I bought a bottle of the green label a couple of weeks later and tried it again, the new green is very similar to the slightly older version with a bit more kick in the end, I really enjoy this Whisky and feel it's a good value and a must own.
This was a pleasure just to read! Glad you use The Nose nosing method. The older ones were tops for sure. Smart you chose that one. The new ones are very good as well... I do wonder if old bottle effect is good to the blended Malt and hence the improvement! Only time will tell... Cheers🥃🥃🥃🥃 Mark
