- While Warcraft lore and story may have been solidified with World of Warcraft, the RTS titles in the Warcraft franchise have so much to offer when it comes to world building details and tidbits. Let's take a look at how we can use the RTS games to distill lore and story!
Ancient Warcraft Lore is a RUclips series where we discuss all things old Lore and Story in the Warcraft Universe. From the truly dilapidated corners of game manuals and obscure unit statistics to observable and documentable in game lore, this is all about bringing back the glory of ancient lore of Warcraft.
Ancient Lore is a followup to the long forgotten podcast Ancient of Lore from WoW Radio. Starting back in mid 2005, Ancient of Lore was the first lore and story discussion broadcast on the subject of World of Warcraft. We continue that legacy of critical thinking and analysis here.

But what lore do we glean from the mechanics of times I knew I was losing in my college WC3 LAN parties? Playing as Night Elves and uprooting my entire base, sending my buildings and units all in a death train straight to the heart of my opponent's base.
Tedward, all we can learn from that is the inevitability of the heat death of the universe.
I love the fact you remember and bring up Warcraft rts games specificly Wc3.
So much of WoW fandom especialy players who joined much later, is so disconnected from it and dont even know they owe whole of WoW setting to Warcraft 3. WoW sometimes somewhat failing to do it justice, tho mostly on story or factions standpoint. I adore the music and exploration of its world even if some elements drive me insane sometimes 😅
It's so important we remember where we came from. Thank you for your thoughts!
Yeah wc3 where the entire garbage story formula for WoW started
what a masterpiece
lmao
13:30 Not sure if you're actually asking the question, or just mentioning it's something players should know, but regarding the Dwarven units in Warcraft 3 and why they weren't in Warcraft 2:
I believe during the events of the Second War, the Alliance of Lordaeron had only secured military assistance from the Wildhammer faction of dwarves, the gryphon riders of Aerie Peak. The Bronzebeard faction of dwarves based out of Ironforge weren't part of it, though my lore memory forgets why - maybe they were still more isolationist after the War of the Three Hammers? Besides, the Alliance had full assistance of the elves of Quel'Thalas for powerful ranged units, lorewise.
As an aside, I haven't seen it mentioned too much how much of a complete retcon it seemed when the wc2 elves seemed a lot more like generic fantasy wood elves, including leftovers that made their way into wc3, but since seemed to have been shoved in the fantasy high elf trope end, with arcane magic, impressive architecture, and swordsmanship. This of course was to make room for the night elves to cover the wood elf tropes, including stealth, archery, and nature affinity.
Anyway, by the time of the Third War, I believe Quel'Thalas was not too tight with the Alliance. I can't remember if it was the guy calling in one last favor from the Troll Wars that got any to come in at all, or if it was only the nation of Dalaran that sent spellcasters, who happened to be elves. That left room in the Alliance's ranks for ranged specialists, which I'm sure the Bronzebeards were happy to fill.
I hope I got things right enough.
After the Orcs second incursion through Beyond the Dark Portal, the Alliance of Lordaeron quickly collapsed. I have an episode on this, and I go into greater detail of what happened and why.
Oh, but if only we got lore distilled from WoW mechanics… the whole story was affected by being set in the MMO genre :(
I mean, there's deffinetly a lot to look at when it comes to specs, abilities, and other skills, as well as mob and boss mechanics, but I get where you're going here lol
Sadly... lots lf it for worse. And lots of those mistakes hurt the game long term limit even roleplaying element of this game.
Night elves and Forsaken being crammed into Alliance and Horde and WoW mostly ignoring big chunk of Wc3.
Those shouldve been their own factions both uniquely set alongside their neighbours. Reputation system that shouldve been used for main factions the same way it was for neutral ones went wholely unused save for shallow mpunt aquisition from 'already allied' factions.
Nightelves should be mostly on good standing with Horde, Tauren and Theramore humans.
Some separate subfactions of nightelves could still hold a grudge for Cenarius, maybe Wardens or just common nightelves that are not oart of Sentinel army or Druids.
Things like this could add so much depth and variety to the world.
Forsaken were similarily illogical as part of the Horde. I think Horde should have almost no presense in Old world/Eastern kingdoms nor care much for it.
Old alliance of stormwind, dwarves, gnomes and remaining highelves should likewise have not much in Kalimdor save for neutral Theramore and goblin towns rest being neutral or hostile depending on reputation player has, with ability to become friendly with any faction with enough legwork.
Forsaken should have a hold of Lordaeron as their own faction neutral or hostile to most factions(and perceived as hostile by Old alliance).
Alliance could have more use of Farstrider lodges as hubs in various parts of the world especially in Lordaeron like one there is in Eastern plaguelands.
Horde could have remants of orcs who failed to join the exodus like hammerfall in arathi or orcs who chose to stay after being freed by Thrall.
@@Kacpa2 I agree, and as far as the actual plot goes having the players do everything changes how the story is told and how it unfolds.
It also leaves a bad taste in my mouth how NPCs are just always hanging out in the same spots, waiting for you, the player. They are the important ones! They should be out doing things and changing the world outside of cutscenes and when offscreen!
Did you play on Everlook you sound very familiar.
I did yes, not for very long though.
When you brought up the different ores factions used I lost it. Does anybody even know how many ores are in current WoW? 🤣🤣
It's very surprising for a lot of folks when they find out that many different ores were in Warcraft 3, even just by name!
great video!! from another lore junkie lol. wish i played those games as a kid. liked and subbed :)
Thank you so much, welcome to the community!
