Mr. Inosanto was my 7th grade history teacher in so cal at malaga cove. He was an awesome teacher and person. He used to bring in super 8 movies of a blind old fighter fighting off 5 other fighters with knives and other weapons. They were awesome movies. The real deal. He once did 1500 pushups (non stop) in one of our lunch breaks! He sounds just like he did in the late 70's

I'm a Pekiti Tirsia (FMA) practitioner but I lost my motivation to continue practicing the art after coming back from my last deployment in Iraq due to wrist injurries and PTSD (still in the ARMY just FYI). I'm slowly rehabilitating my mental condition and been wanting to go back practicing FMA. After watching this excellent presentation by Tatang/Gurong Dan, it opened my eyes to realize that I can incorporate FMA as part of my rehabilitation. Although I still have both bad wrist and waiting to have surgerries, but I think I can start with the basic 12 steps and see if my mind can tolerate the pain. Anyways, I'm so glad that I found this video and I cannot wait to see Tatang/Gurong Dan in DFW for his upcoming seminar.
More power to you Tatang/Gurong Dan you are an inspiration and a truly master of FMA.

FMAs is originally for offensive and counter attack with the sole objective of a quick kill, utilizing any handy objects as weapons, making it perhaps the most deadly and brutal fighting technique. It's not suitable for sports. It's best for law agents, combat troops and for deadly assassins. Filipinos, being known as friendly and hospitable abhors violence hence it was almost lost.

One of the most well-respected Arnis Grandmaster in Visayas and Mindanao was the man named Filemon "Momoy" Canete, one of the 12 Grandmasters of Doce Pares, and founder of San Miguel Eskrima. He uses Sword and Dagger or Espada y Daga.
What Guro Inosanto said about the history of eskrima were true. In fact during the revolution, most of the Guardia Civil or Spanish Guards were killed by numerous cuts. During the Korean War, some Filipino soldiers (Tabak Division) were used bolo or sundang to kill Chinese and North Korean Communist.

Yeah I was shocked how few fighting schools are there compared to schools teaching japanese, korean or chinese martial arts.. Because I think in terms of really knock out and finish your opponent effectively, the filippino martial arts are superior. So I hope more people want to learn this instead of all the foreign stuff. Because, i fact, after testing a few, its better.. it was really out of a caste of warriors, not just some philosophical monestary origin or out of a school just for self defense.. it was tested and needed to really fight for you life

25:07 "When you go tactical, it doesn't have to go through the brain, because it computes through the body very quickly." - I think he's talking about the pain auto response when the nerve signals bounce straight back immediately from the spine, rather than getting processed by the brain. I think that mechanism is fear/adrenaline induced and only lasts for a split second each time.

I took lessons from Dan Inosanto and Jerry Poteet when Dan had his studio in Torrance, California. He was amazing as a person and as an instructor.
I wish I could have kept going but I was in a bad car accident.
You can’t find better people than Dan and Jerry.

Mr. Inosanto is a true Master. His excessive humility is not only commendable but also the source of his greatness. Humbleness and Open Mindedness is the opposite of the same coin. This enable him to see treasure where other see junk.

I am Pampango and I searched for Pampango martial arts in the remote barrios of Bacolor, Pampanga in July 1983- February 1984. Someone came over to introduce himself, with family name Salonga. He was the ninth son of 9 brothers and his father was the ninth son of 9 brothers. He looked 40 years old at that time whereas he was 69 years old when we met. He was the last of those who knew Pampango martial arts.
In 1973-1974, I went all over Pampanga River lower delta then the hiding place of the Communist guerrillas and I saw a lot. The Macabebe Scouts tradition is evident as the people all were adept at the use of machete and knives. Fortunately, I learned these at two years old as taught by waray-waray.
Before I left in Feb 1984, I finally demonstrated my martial arts among the communist-influenced local people and that was, in a way, funny because they underestimated. That broke the communist influence as they boasted that nobody could come toe-to-toe with them. Also since my paternal grandfather was four times governor of Pampanga, Congressman, Justice, and finished as Senator of the Republic, as well as declaring war on the Communists in 1946 forming the Civilian Guards and financed by his personal wealth, I carried that reputation with me. They did not expect me to excel them in the field but then I was training rangers scout rangers (commandos) for 17 years.

I just viewed this program and very impressed with Guro's philosophy of the arts. I also increased pride in my Filipino heritage. Like Guro, my father was a sakada who hired on from Ilocos Sur to work a sugar plantation in Hawai'i. It also brought greater healthy awareness and respect for my brother-in-law, Tuhan Mel Lopez who is 3rd in the Grand Master lineage of Tuhan Villabrael, and Tuhan Largusa.
